We need your help.

To help reduce congestion, the goal is to get 30,000 cars off the road during heavy commute times:

Monday - Friday• Morning: 6:00am – 8:30am• Evening: 4:00pm – 6:30pm

We need your help.

Why Fortify?

• 30 year-old pavement is cracking & crumbling because of a chemical reaction happening underneath the road, triggered by a substance used in paving several decades ago

• Crews must rebuild an 11.5-mile stretch of I-40 and I-440

Where Rebuilding Will Occur

Impacted Areas

Areas of traffic congestion or potential congestion will not be confined to the where road rebuilding will occur.

Impacted areas will also include:

• Roads with an exit onto I-40 and roads that feed into those roads during commuter times

• Roads that have exits onto I-440 such as Wade Avenue

• The expectation is that commuters will attempt to go around the 1-40 work zone by accessing I440 (i.e., the “inner belt line.)

• Keep three lanes open in both directions for most of the project – during the entire I-40 rebuild.

• One and a half years of reduced lanes on one of the busiest interstates in NC.

How State Employees Can Help

As a major employer in the area, state government agencies will be impacted by the road rebuilding. We can do our part by considering the following:

• Alternative work schedules• Teleworking• Be mindful of meeting and event start and stop times• Using webinars or teleconferences for virtual meetings• Encourage the use of public transportation and ride sharing• Over 25,000 state employees work in Wake County and live in

Wake or Johnston County

Alternative Work SchedulesExamples:

For an office-based employee who typically works 8 hours per day Monday through Friday, consider:

Non-traditional start and end times, such as:• 6:30 am – 3:00 pm (w/30 minute lunch break)• 10:00 am - 6:30 pm (w/30 minute lunch break)

Start and end times individualized by day:• 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday (w/30 minute lunch break) and • 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday (w/30 minute lunch break)

Schedule longer work days with shorter work weeks • Four 10-hour days (not including lunch break) and having three days off • Four 9-hour days and one 4 hour day (not including lunch break)

Working Remotely from Home(Telework)Working from home occasionally may be an option for some workers within some agencies, however:

• Employees exempt from overtime pay may work from home one or more days per week.

• Employees eligible for overtime pay usually do not work from home.• Consider how work productivity will be measured.• Consider the home work environment; is it conducive to working at

home?
