Twyla Tharp Dance Residency: March 7-April 17Showcase of Works-in-Progress: Saturday, April 16, 2016 @ 7:30 pmOrpheum Film & Performing Arts Center6050 Main Street, Village of Tannersville

Twyla Tharp has changed the face of American Dance, and at 74, Tharp is still doing what she loves to do: Create. With their immaculate technique and joy, her fierce band of dancers brings the choreography to life. In each piece, Tharp turns her decades of experience-- dances for Hollywood films, television, and the Broadway stage, ballets, modern dances—into living proof that time is her partner as she continues to deepen and expand the singular imagination which makes her one of the centu-ry’s most treasured artists.

Twyla Tharp and her company of dancers will be in residence at the Catskill Mountain Foundation’s Orpheum Film and Performing Arts Center in Tannersville mounting repertory works, rehearsing a new work, and engaging the local community in outreach activities. During her six weeks at the CMF, Ms. Tharp will reconstruct two earlier works, COUNTRY DANCES from 1976 and BRAHMS PAGANINI from 1980, as well as show a new work set to Beethoven’s Opus 130. Since graduating from Barnard College in 1963, Ms. Tharp has choreographed more than 160 works, 129 dances, 12 television specials, six Hollywood movies, four full-length ballets, four Broadway shows and two figure skating routines. She received one Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, 19 honorary doctorates, the Vietnam Veterans of America President’s Award, the 2004 National Medal of the Arts, the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize, and a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor. Her many grants include the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Twyla Tharp was born on July 1, 1941 in Indiana. When she was eight years old, her family moved to California where her father built a house with a playroom equipped with a dance floor and ballet barres. Tharp enjoyed music, and at the age of 6 began formal ballet lessons. Eventually, she moved to New York City where she studied art history while simultaneously attending the American Ballet Theatre school. After receiving her degree in art history in 1963, Ms. Tharp joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company before starting her own dance company. She has danced with several great masters of modern dance including Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and Erick Hawkins.

The residency with Twyla Tharp Dance is part of Pathways to Dance, an annual eight-county Capital Region initiative, in concert with Man-hattan’s Joyce Theater, designed to support new dance creation and presentation through a variety of intensive workshops; performances;

exhibitions; lectures; and master classes. Members, along with the Joyce (New York County), include: The Egg and UAlbany Performing Arts Center (Albany); Basilica Hudson (Columbia); Catskill Mountain Foundation (Greene); Troy Savings Bank Music Hall (Rensselaer); National Museum of Dance, Saratoga Performing Arts Center (Saratoga); Proctors (Schenectady); and Hubbard Hall (Washington). A recital of sonatas by Mozart, Beethoven, Koželuh, Dussek, and Clementi on pianos with which the composers would have been familiar. The differences between pianos in Vienna and London, and the implications for the music and performance habits of the time, are explained by pianist and musicologist Maria Rose. Why is a Mozart sonata different when played on a 1790 Viennese piano and why was Mozart critical of Clem-enti’s playing when they played in a contest at the Viennese court in 1781? Why were Koželuh’s sonatas more popular than Mozart’s in 1790, how did Dussek influence piano builders, and why was Clementi called the “father of the piano”? These are some of the questions that will be answered in brief lectures framing the performance of familiar piano music in new and unexpected ways.

Saturday, June 18, 2016 @ 2:00 pmPiano Performance MuseumDoctorow Center for the Arts7971 Main Street, Village of Hunter

Tickets Purchased Ahead: $10; $7 students

Musicologist Dr. Jeffrey Langford with pianist Dr. Joanne Polk at the 1783 Stein Viennese Pianoforte from the Steven E. Greenstein collection, will show that what we know today as musical notation needs to be “deciphered” by today’s pianists when it comes to music from the 18th century. An important part of this lecture is the opportunity audi-ences will have to hear this music played on an instrument that is considerably different from a modern concert grand and to consider how this older instrument might have impacted com-posing and performance.

… then, a little nightmare music, and now, Mozart. For those who listen to Mozart, live with Mozart, gave birth to Mozart, eat, pray, and love Mozart, don’t care at all for Mozart, never even heard of Mozart, this show promises you all that it will contain absolutely NO Mozart! But that’s giving away way too much… The world of classical music has finally entered its future. Mendelssohn: His Life in Violin SonatasViolinist Abigail Karr and Fortepianist Yi-heng Yang1842 John Broadwood Semi-Grand1873 Erard Paris 7’ Grand

Saturday, August 20, 2016 @ 2:30pmTickets Purchased Ahead: $25; $20 seniors; $7 studentsAt the Door: $30; $25 seniors; $7 students

This performance will explore the relatively unknown but delightful violin and piano works of Mendelssohn. Rarely performed as a set, the composer’s three full sonatas and an unfinished Fragment are explored by baroque violinist Abigail Karr and historical keyboard specialist Yi-heng Yang. The works tell the story of Mendelssohn’s life and creative progress, as the first was written when he was only 11 years old, the second as he was coming into his own as one of the great Romantics, and the third during his mature period. Using a historic piano from the Piano Performance Museum as well as a period-faithful violin, Karr and Yang also draw the audience into the sounds and aesthetics of 19th century music making, demonstrating and explaining the differences between older instruments and the modern piano and violin.

“Intimate and arresting” —NPR

“In addition to finger-picked guitar, swelling cello and tight, prismatic vocal harmonies, ‘Spirit Cold’ boasts a bold, airy drum part that propels the song through the peaks and troughs of the arrangement.”

—Wall Street Journal

It’s been half a decade since Tall Heights kicked off their career in Boston’s Faneuil Hall, busking for more than 100 days to help fund their very first EP. Paul Wright would play cello, Tim Har-rington would strum the acoustic guitar, and both bandmates would sing, their voices cutting through the noise of shoppers and tourists. Since those days, the duo’s harmony-heavy indie folk has taken Tall Heights to stages across the country. They’ve toured America, released the critically-acclaimed album, Man of Stone, and earned a spot on the same folk family tree as Simon & Garfunkel and Bon Iver. On 2015’s Holding On, Holding Out, the duo widen their reach significantly, beefing up their sound with electronics, synthesizers, drums loops, Casio keyboards, and plenty of shimmer and shine. It’s a record of exploration and expansion, with Tall Heights building something towering on top of their folksy foundation.

This performance is made possible with the generous support of the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation.

“Her voice is disarmingly natural, and her settings are elegantly succinct … her magnificently transparent music holds tidings of family, memory, solitude and the inexorability of time: weighty thoughts handled with the lightest touch imaginable.”

—The New York Times

Leyla McCalla is a New York-born Haitian-American living in New Orleans, who sings in French, Haitian Creole and English, and plays cello, tenor banjo and guitar. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, as well as by Amer-ican jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty—it vibrates with three centuries of history, yet also feels strikingly fresh, distinctive and contemporary. Leyla’s debut album, Vari-Colored Songs: A Tribute to Langston Hughes, was named 2013’s Album of the Year by the London Sunday Times, and received additional raves from a number of other publications for its haunting mixture of music and message.

Named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the top five jazz musi-cians under 30 to watch, pianist Chris Pattishall will lead an octet in this debut night dedicated to the writings of Argentini-an author Jorge Luis Borges and the rich history of tango. A monumental magical realist, Borges described the tango as invoking “an apocryphal past, simultaneously stoic and orgi-astic, in which I have challenged and fought, in the end to fall silently in an obscure knife-fight.” Pattishall’s compositions will draw on classic tango, the symphonic tone poems of Rimsky-Korsakov and Richard Strauss, and the works of Astor Piazzolla, weaving a network of inspiration, reference and imagination.
