Daily Schedule

STEM – (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)

2 hours daily Flexible groupings, based on assessments/observations Daily homework practice of concepts Post-tests at the end of each unit (total of 5 units) County mid-year and end-of-year tests given in January and June Fact practice is essential (sums to 20) Integration of science and technology throughout year.

Science Units

• Insects – research project

• The World Around Me (maps)

• Earth Science- Erosion

• Sticky Situation

Writing

• Emphasis on complete sentences, correct punctuation and capitalization.• Focus on paragraphs: topic sentence, minimum of 3 details, & conclusion.• Students will compose 3 types of writing throughout the year.

These are :•Opinion- a paper in which students voice their opinion about something and provide reasons/proof to back up their opinion

•Narrative – a story they compose themselves

•Informational – students compose a paper that has details/information they have gathered from books, or other outside resources

Humanities – (ELA / Social Studies)2 hours daily

Whole class read-aloud and discussions about reading strategies, skills, fluency, & grammar

Guided Reading Groups Word Study (spelling) Activities Vocabulary Independent Reading/Learning Centers/Stations Social Studies units integrated throughout the year

Social Studies Units(Integrated into ELA curriculum)

STAR+ Behavior in 2nd GradeMy behavior helped teaching and

All students start day at this level. Students can earn 1 star ticket at the end of the day if they are on GREEN at the end of the day.

Students can move up to this level, if behavior and actions are all- around great!

Students will be moved to YELLOW when they have been given 3 warnings about behaviors. If students later improve their behavior they can move back up to GREEN.

Students had received warnings about behavior and did not change behaviors. Once a student is on ORANGE they will fill out a “Stop and Think” form which will be sent home for parent signature. Students can NOT move back up from ORANGE.

Students behavior did not improve and or change as a result of being on ORANGE and the student continued with inappropriate behaviors. RED form will come home with for parent signature. Students can NOT move back up from RED.

STAR Behavior Daily Report

• When students do not exhibit star behavior, they will receive a warning and upon their 3rd warning will change their color to the next lower color.

• Daily reports on behavior by using the color scale will help parents and teachers stay informed and have a daily communication regarding work/social habits each child.

• Students who do not have homework or materials needed for the day will receive a note in their agenda letting parents know of the problem.

Agendas Homework

Used to record homework assignments, STAR letters and teacher-parent correspondence

Will be checked by the teacher each day

Required to be initialed by a parent/guardian each night- STAR+

Required to be at school EVERY DAY!

• Student should attempt homework independently first

• Parent may review homework and directions with student

• Write note to teacher if child reached “frustration level”

• Homework will be checked by the teacher each day
