ABOUT WSB

The World Series of Boxing is a groundbreaking, one of a kind, a first truly global boxing league that brings together Franchise teams from around the world to compete in five weight categories: Bantam (54kg), Light (61kg), Middle (73kg), Light Heavy (85kg), Heavy (91+kg). As well as a being team competition, the series also incorporates separate individual championships for the best boxers in each of the five weight divisions. Developed by AIBA, the International Boxing Association, the WSB is a unique concept in the world of boxing. It is the only pro style competition where boxers retain their Olympic eligibility. It brings together the best Olympic boxers in an explosive format with worldwide appeal. Endorsed by nearly 200 National Federations, it represents the future of boxing. It reunites the broader boxing community and connects the sport to its grassroots foundation, as well as helping it reclaim its noble position across the world. The WSB promotes a transparent scoring system and brings with it much a needed world-leading governance and commercial guidance to international boxing. The WSB marked a new era in the sport of boxing when it launched its first season on 19 November 2010. In its inaugural year, the WSB competition had 12 teams spanning the globe in three continental conferences: the Americas, Asia and Europe. 219 boxers from 49 countries competed, and amongst those were 18 Olympic and World medallists. For the second season, the 12 teams were split into two World Groups to further enhance the global appeal of the league.

For the first time the world’s top boxers could enjoy training in a team, regular competition against world-class opponents and had the opportunity of earning a regular salary along with a performance based bonus system. Paris United became the first WSB Team Champions. The five winners at the WSB Individual Championships were awarded Champion’s belts. AIBA had also secured direct qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games for these WSB Individual Champions. Ending a six months season made of 72 matches and 360 bouts, the 2011-2012 WSB Team Final will feature the top two squads of this second season, at the ExCeL London, the venue for this year’s Olympic Games. The Winner will be crowned 2011-2012 WSB Team Champions.

DOLCE & GABBANA MILANO THUNDER

The Italian outfit has really added style to the competition this season, bringing a sense of bravado, backed by a quality set-up and an exciting array of talented fighters. After finishing the regular season just two points behind eventual winners Paris United in last season’s Group stages, Milano were determined to make it to the showpiece final this time around and after reaching that objective they have their eyes firmly set on that much coveted WSB Team Trophy.

They started the season in irrepressible fashion, looking invincible in the early stages as they won their first six matches and stormed to the top of Group A. Although they were pegged back by their final opponents Dynamo Moscow, who ended the regular season by winning the group, there were plenty of positives for the Thunder to take into the knock-out stages.

In the quarter-finals they were given the opportunity of avenging last season’s heartache as they faced reigning champions Paris United. The French team made home advantage count in the first leg as they brought a slender lead back to the Mediolanum Forum in Italy. Milano were in unforgiving mood on their territory, as they dominated proceedings with a resounding win to ensure a semi-final showdown with Group B table-toppers Baku Fires.

Baku represented their biggest challenge to date and Milano defied the odds to win 5:0 at home. The pivotal moment in that match was the Middleweight contest that saw Irishman William McLaughlin mount the comeback of the season as he overturned a two round deficit to triumph. With the wind in their sails, they won all of their remaining bouts to take a huge lead with them on the travels to Azerbaijan for the return leg. That match was then just a formality. Since Easter they have been closed off from the world in a specialised tailored-made training camp just for the specifics of this Final against Dynamo Moscow.

Fully endorsed by the Italian Boxing Federation and being sponsored by the Italian luxury fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, the team has been synonymous with glamour, which has attracted a huge fan base, not only in Italy, but all around the world. Closely followed by influential media partners La Gazzetta dello Sport and La Repubblica, as well as being broadcasted by SportItalia, the team has really set the standard in the competition. The business mastermind behind these associations has been President Paolo Taveggia.

The boxing side has been the major influence on results, the coaching set-up is second to none and at its head you will find Italian living-legend Francesco Damiani, one of the most decorated in his country and actual National Coach. His pedigree speaks for itself, as boxer he took silver medals at both the 1982 AIBA World Championships in Munich and at the 1984 Olympic Games. He was also crowned European Gold Medallist in Ampere in 1981 and in Varna (Bulgaria) in 1983. He fought 140 bouts as an amateur before turning professional in 1985. He fought 34 times, with a record of 32 wins and 2 losses. As a coach, he has lead boxers to one bronze medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, one silver medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships Chicago 2007, two gold medals at the AIBA World Boxing Championships Milano 2009 and one gold, one silver and one bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In July, he will once again be the leader of the Italian National squad at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

STAR BOXERS

Milano Thunder has two reigning boxing champions in their squad; supreme Middleweight talent, Ukrainian Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Heavyweight superstar Clemente Russo. Both boxers are WSB World Champions following their first season victories in the Individual Championships.

Clemente RUSSO

Clemente Russo is not only one of the Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder’s leading boxers but he is by far one of the biggest attractions in the World Series of Boxing. This 29-year-old Italian Heavyweight has quite a pedigree after taking the gold medal at the 2007 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Chicago, USA, before coming home with the silver from the Beijing Olympic Games a year later. Russo has since gone from strength to strength, defeating all before him in his first WSB season to capture the Individual Championships belt and going so far unbeaten in his second season, amassing 13 wins over the two campaigns. Last year, Russo also starred in a semi-autobiographical film ‘Tatanka’ about a young Southern Italian man trying to escape from the crime-ridden mafia controlled province of Caserta through boxing. The film itself was critically acclaimed and Russo’s performance got excellent reviews. However the proud Italian orthodox fighter has remained true to his love of boxing, leading out his teammates with the Dolce & Gabbana Milano Thunder team in what he hopes will be a season that will see them lift the WSB Team Trophy.

Sergiy DEREVYANCHENKO

Sergiy Derevyanchenko is the Middleweight Ukrainian winning machine. The 26-year-old is one of the most technically gifted fighters in the whole competition. Also a reigning WSB Individual Champion, like teammate Russo, Derevyanchenko has yet to taste defeat in two seasons (7WP and 4TKO), having accumulated eleven wins in the process. He is so accomplished that he delights fans wherever he goes with his sensational style. He loves to dictate the tempo of his bouts and his hand speed makes him a terrifying opponent. Unleashing from every angle and with such a repertoire of shots in his arsenal, expect him to come to the fore when he faces Dynamo Moscow. Quick and agile, this thoroughbred boxer is simply irresistible in the ring.

DYNAMO MOSCOW

In typical style, this Russian team has gone about its business with steely determination and surprised many in the competition with the flair in their squad. An unknown quantity early in the season, they quickly showed they meant business with several polished displays that saw them finish top of their Group. They have seemed almost unstoppable at times and at home have become the irremovable object. They had the right blend of talent in their team but the most impressive to see has been how hungry they have been for success. They established themselves as title contenders mid-way through the regular season and since then have gone from strength to strength, the key to this has been hard work. The clash of styles with Milano will be a mouth-watering prospect for all boxing purists during the Final.

Dynamo Moscow, also fully endorsed by the Boxing Federation of Russia, hope that for the 90th anniversary of the ‘Dynamo’ name, they can put the WSB Team Final trophy along with all the other sporting achievements of the society. The world-famous Dynamo Association (Club) is the biggest and the oldest sport entity in Russia which runs 70 sport disciplines. It also provides the Russian National squad with the majority of its boxers.

At the helm of this boxing team is Stepan Lendyel, the team’s Managing Director, a keen studier of the sport who believes hard work gets your results He has installed a collective mentality where the team comes above all else.

Head coach Eduard Kravtsov was the one to lead the team throughout the season, constructing fantastic training schedules that saw Dynamo Moscow suffer only two defeats throughout the whole campaign.

In the quarter-finals, the team from the Russian capital were clinical in the way they dispatched of the Germany-based Leipzig Leopards. It was in the semis though that Dynamo showcased why they have been feared by opposition throughout the season. In the penultimate round of this competition, they faced the mighty Astana Arlans, who had invested heavily in their squad in the hope of bettering their result of beaten finalist from last season. In the first leg of that semi-final, in Astana, Dynamo Moscow put on a solid performance to return to their venue with a one fight disadvantage. On their home turf, they were irresistible as they completely dominated Astana Arlans who had in their line-up three of their best boxers. It was a scintillating performance by Moscow, one that confirmed their status as the team to beat in the competition.

Dynamo Moscow impressed everyone with the homogeneity in their squad. All of their boxers have the potential to inflict defeat on anyone. There promises to be fireworks when they face Milano.

STAR BOXERS

Dynamo Moscow impressed everyone with the homogeneity in their squad. All of their boxers have the potential to inflict defeat on anyone. There promises to be fireworks when they face Milano.

Adlan ABDURASHIDOV

Russia’s Adlan Abdurashidov, at 21 years of age, really made a name for himself this season, after topping the Lightweight charts. He has gone unbeaten in five fights, recording one TKO along the way. The most impressive though was the calibre of the rivals he beat in the process, these included 2009 AIBA World Champion Domenico Valentino and last season’s top ranked fighter in the division, Astana Arlans’ Yerzhan Mussafirov. This fast and furious orthodox fighter loves to pepper his opponents with an array of combination punches. You can feel his passion every time he dons those gloves; he is a true star in the making. He, like Russo and Derevyanchenko, will be competing for the title of WSB World Champion at the Individual Championships on 9 June at the ExCeL London.

Maxim GAZIZOV

Compatriot Maxim Gazizov made quite an impression in his WSB debut season, recording so far four wins, one loss and defeating the competition’s knock-out king, Kanat Slam, in the semi-finals. The 28-year-old was unbeknown to many, but after some investigative research we found out that he was quite a prospect in his younger years and made his mark amongst thousands of boxers in his native Russia. Confident, technical and tactical, this calculating orthodox packs quite a punch. His trademark is his watertight defence, he reads his opponents so well, making him deadly when counter-punching. Gazizov’s only defeat came against the division’s top man, Derevyanchenko, however with a full season now under his belt and with some big scalps to his name, look out for the Russian to make a big impact when he takes to the ring in London.

Oleksandr GVOZDYK

Oleksandr Gvozdyk from Ukraine was not one of the Dynamo Moscow main men during the regular season but the two-time National Champion and recent qualifier for the London 2012 Olympic Games set the competition alight with two outstanding performances in the quarter and semi-finals. The 190cm tall 25-year-old defeated both Light Heavyweight WSB Individual Championships finalists from last season in those matches, first Frenchman Ludovic Groguhé then Algerian superstar Abdelhafid Benchabla. With those two wins, he will be in the mix to carry the hopes of his team in that division.
