Forwarding Service Requested

FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART

Here we are once again just a few weeks before Easter. It comes early this year on March 27, and we pray that an early spring comes with it after our recent winter storms. The cold and snow have led to the cancellation of Sunday services from severe weather warning on January 24th, then we braved the chill and services continued the 31st. I hope, like me, that you are looking forward to our worship together as the Lenten Season tenders our thoughts of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. May our hearts be receptive to the guiding of His sweet Holy Spirit as He guides us on our reflection of His mercy and all forgiving grace. During our worship events, as we gather to praise through song, scripture, prayer, and meditation may we be sensitive to the sacredness of these moments as we unite together in worship and ministry for our Lord.Lenten Worship – On the three Wednesdays of March, we will gather at noon with other churches of our community for our annual Lenten worship services and luncheons. I hope you will join the larger body of Christ in Alderson for these times of worship and fellowship. Clean Up Day – On Saturday April 2 our House and Grounds Team is planning a clean-up day for our church and grounds. This is a time when the body of Christ can come together to minister to the physical needs of our facilities using a multitude of talents.

Easter PrayerOur Father up in heaven, hear this Easter Prayer. May the people of all nations be united in thy care. For Earth’s peace and man’s salvation, came only by thy grace; and not through bombs and missiles or our quest for outer space…For until all man recognize that Battle is the Lord’s and peace on Earth cannot be won with strategy and words, we will go on vainly fighting, as we have in ages past; Finding only empty victories and a peace that cannot last..For we’ve come to trust completely in the power of man made things, unmindful of God’s mighty power and that He is “King of Kings.” We have turned our eyes away from Him to go our selfish way, and money, power, and pleasure are the gods we serve today…and the good green Earth God gave us to peacefully enjoy, through greed and fear and hatred we are seeking to destroy. O, Father, up in heaven, stir and wake our sleeping souls, Renew our faith and lift us up and give us higher goals, And grant us heavenly

guidance as Easter comes again – for more than guided missiles All the world needs Guided man.

??? Bible Quiz ???

Just before the Last Supper (John 13), Jesus took off his outer robe, poured water into a basin and began washing his diciples’ feet. One disciple, however, protested having the Lord wash his feet. Jesus told the reluctant man that unless he allowed Jesus to wash his

feet, he really had no share in Christ’s leadership. The disciple then relented. He said Jesus could wash not only his feet but his hands and head, as well.Choose the name of this disciple from the list below:

America for Christ Offering 2016Discipleship: Becoming More Like Jesus

God’s desire for all of us is to become more like Christ.. We become more like Christ by first growing in our knowledge of Him. It stands to reason that we cannot grow to become like someone we don’t know. The deeper our knowledge of Christ, the deeper our understanding of Him, and the more like Him we become. Among other reasons, we are to know and understand Christ so that we will be secure in the faith. The America for Christ Offering for 2016 theme “Discipleship: Becoming More Like Christ” reminds us that, as American Baptist, we embody the love of our Lord in the world in word and deed.

The Apostle Paul reiterates this truth in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” It is refreshing to read that God is continuously working on us, bringing us up in maturity, shaping, our hearts and growing our faith. We see that pointed out in Samuel, who “continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people” (II Samuel 2:26). And we hear the exhortation of Peter, who concluded, “But grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). The writer of Hebrews, likewise, commands, “Therefore let us go on toward perfection, leaving behind the basic teaching of Christ “(Hebrews 6:1).

The natural consequence of knowing and obeying God is that He becomes greater and greater, while we become less and less, as we yield control of our lives to Him. Just as John the Baptist knew that “He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30), so the Christian grows to reflect Christ. Luke sums it up best when he describes what Jesus told His disciples:“If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me,. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it” (Luke :23-24).

The America for Christ Offering reminds us that service is a way of life for Christ’s church. Extending the hope, love and compassion of our Lord to our neighbors and communities is a powerful demonstration that we have been transformed. We are invigorated to come alongside people as they journey through life. We are being requested to join in giving generously to this year’s offering, and reach our goal in support of home mission through the America for Christ (AFC) Offering 2016.
