From the 27th July to the 12th of August 2012 the Games of the XXX Olympiad will take place in London, where for several weeks hundreds of cameras will be focused on athletes and competitions with images beamed out to an audience of billions. The modern Olympics Games and motion pictures share a common birth date of 1896. From their humble beginnings the Olympics, motion pictures and media in general have developed together in sophistication and now reach a truly global audience. At first, the relationship between film-making and the Olympic Games was slow to grow. It was not until the advent of television that the synergy between the Games and the Media grew into the worldwide phenomena it is today. The exhibition showcases each individual Olympic Games with a
short story of the sports event and the relationship of the available media technology on the Games. The 1936 Olympics in Berlin, for example, were pivotal in the relationship between the media and sports. Groundbreaking cinematographic techniques were used to capture the athletes from a range of different perspectives using multiple movie cameras and, for the first time, limited live television broadcasts were tried. The 1948 Olympics in London were the first Games to be covered by a public TV service. The sale of exclusive TV rights has become a source of growing income for the International Olympic Committee since 1960. The advent of live radio and television broadcasting has continually increased the popularity of the Olympic Games. The Olympics through Media exhibition is the first time an exhibition has been co-hosted by two departments at Qatar Museums Authority, the Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum and the Media Collections Department. The exhibition collection is sourced from important historical artefacts and visual material from both departments. Part of the exhibition is an extensive educational program including a children’s lounge, video game competition, regular guided tours, gallery lectures as well as a summer holiday program.
Fareej Folklore Directed by Mohammed Saeed Harib
Katara Art Center Courtyard
Al Fareej (meaning 'neighborhood' in Emirati Arabic) is the smash hit 3D animated series from the United Arab Emirates. It is a hilarious take on modern life in Dubai through the wisdom and humor of four old national women tackling everyday problems. The series expanded into 'Freej Folklore' - a stage show combining a unique mix of live and virtual animation, film, light, and acrobatic performances across a 40 meter stage with multilayer screen projections. This film captures the essence of the stage show.

A Matter of Time includes the brand-new Time clocks by Daniel Weil which are constructed from sleek nickel-plated brass and steel. All of the pieces speak of Weil’s fascination with technology and conceptual notions of time. “Objects like clocks are both prosaic and profound,” Weil says. “Prosaic because of their ubiquity in everyday life, profound because of the mysterious nature of time itself. Time can be reduced to hours, minutes, and seconds, just as a clock can be reduced to its component parts. This doesn’t explain time, but in a way simply exposes its mysterious essence.”

Nature is becoming rare in our daily life. In the way our urbanizing world is generally built and planned, our everyday surroundings have become perpetual and static through conditioned climates and 24 hour lighting. When unpredictable natural elements such as a lifting breeze,a sudden shower, or a setting sun are planned out of our surroundings, the timeline of our every day is lost. A living digital organism growing on the walls and floors of an indoor space, that reacts to the actual nature of its location and reveals the character of a space. The projected plant silhouettes are alive; from a digital seed that contains the genetical data of its family, they grow affected by actual measured rainfall and sunshine, move directly on actual wind, and throughout the day turn along with the sun. The plants are not pre-drawn or animated, but uniquely generated by the software and the space they reside in. A lightweed consists of a several hundred parts that are independently linked to the sensors outside, creating a live generated, hyper-real motion. At the start of the day they are few, but as the space is used they pollinate from wall to wall and increase in amount.
Stimulating artists development and the production of artworks by Qataris, is key for Katara and its Cultural Affairs Department. Through the promotion of Artists Ateliers, Educational Workshops and dialogue with visiting Artists, these objectives were being pursued consistently during 2011 and will continue in the years to come. Creating the conditions under which the Qatari artists can thrive, and their work can be produced in be the best conditions possible, and to an increasingly higher standard of quality and international recognition, is a goal motivating all the Katara Visual Arts Department team. The current exhibition, titled “Arabic Calligraphy in the Katara Artists Ateliers” is the result of a selection of artworks incorporating Arabic Calligraphy, produced at Katara by invited Qatari Artists in 2011 and 2012. The objective of this Ramadan exhibition is both to share with the visitors the results achieved, and to invite them to participate with Katara, in stimulating Qatari artists and their artwork production through giving them the opportunity to acquire some of the artworks created and in exhibition.
