AEROSMITH reviewed by Jenny A.

The lights were out. All I could see were little black figures walking ac-ross the stage, placing microphones here and drum sets there. The audien-ce was out of control, screaming with anxiety. I was standing on my toes, leaning over the balcony to get a better look at the stage, when, slowly, the lights turned on. Out of nowhere, they appeared the greatest band ali-ve Aerosmith.

The moment they walked on, everyone went wild. When the band gotorganized on the gigantic stage, a large rattlesnake (fake, of course) rosebehind them. It was amazing! Then, they began to sing ”Sweet Taste ofIndia”. They continued with other great songs such as ”Janie’s Got a Gun”,”Dream On”, ”Pink”, ”Crazy”, ”Walk this Way” and many more of the-ir greatest hits.

Aerosmith are one of the few bands that make the audience feel loved.Steven Tyler, lead singer, always talks to you like you have known himfor years. Because the concert was in Boston, where the band started out, they played an extra-long show. Steve Tyler said that they loved playingin Boston because we were the best crowd.

The show ended around two in the morning. I don’t think I have everhad such a great time in my life. In fact, I am going back this New Ye-ar’s Eve to watch them play again!

That is such a hard question to answer, because there is so muchto remember, starting with the very first time you come in. It’s so exci-ting, but it’s also very scary because you don’t know what to expect. So,I’ve had so many different moments here, moments of great joy and sad-ness and what I consider to be very historic times that I just can’t pickone out.

They always stressed the importance of education, working hardin school and learning as much as possible. They also encouraged me tovalue myself and believe in myself and do what I thought was right forme, not follow the crowd or be influenced by the fashion of the day.

You know, I can’t really remember. I think that natural disa-sters or nuclear war, or something happening to my family were my big-gest fears. I don’t know that I had any unique fears; it was more what kidsworry about as they grow up.

I don’t know. You’d probably have to ask my daughter. I justtried to do the best I knew how, and I think that it’s such a challenge forany of us who are mothers or fathers. The vast majority of parents try todo the best they can, given what they were given as children, how theywere raised and what they understand about themselves and the world. But no matter how hard you try, you’re going to make mistakes.

Well, when I was growing up, I didn’t really know any womenwho worked, other than my teachers, the librarian and a few people likethat. So, I didn’t admire one individual as much as I admired characteri-stics of people, people who were resilient and courageous in the face ofwhatever life threw their way, whether it was an illness or some other tra-gedy.

I don’t know. I think I would like to know more about the worldand what happens. I’d like to have more time in the day, and be able todo all the things that I am working on that I hope will help people. I wo-uld like to be able to do all the things that I’m still working on and thatI care about. So that would mean I’d have to sleep less, so I’d like to chan-ge that about myself the number of hours I need for sleep, so I would ha-

ve even more hours in the day to work and be involved and meet and spendtime with people like you.

I can tell you that she’s had a great first year at Stanford andhas made a lot of friends. And she’s really having a great time with herlife. And I guess as a mother, my hope is that no matter what she decidesto do, she’ll always be as happy as she is right now.

First of all, you have to do what you believe is right, and thatoften is very hard. Sometimes even your friends don’t understand and ma-ke fun of you or give you a hard time. But you’ve got to live with your-self and, at the end of the day, what’s most important is that you’ve beentrue to yourself. And that’s advice from the ancient Greeks, and it’s asgood today as it was then.

Last month the senior elephant keeper at London Zoo Jim Robson waskilled by one of the elephants he loved. A tragic death, and one that co-uld also mean the end of London Zoo perhaps of all Britain’s urban zo-os. Last week the zoo announced that its three elephants were to be mo-ved to a wild animal park. A statement from the zoo said that Robson’sdeath had not forced the decision and that the intention had always beento move the elephants. “We will be sorry to see the elephants go; therehave been elephants in London Zoo since 1831. But these elephants willfeel much better in the larger group,” said the zoo’s director-general.

As one article put it, this is a crisis for the zoo because if London Zoocannot house “charismatic mega-species”, it means that its days are num-bered. Many smaller zoo animals are a delight, but they will not makemany adults pay for a ticket or children scream with delight. Lions, ti-gers, gorillas, giraffes, pandas, rhinos and most of all elephants are whatmakes a visit to the zoo unforgettable.

Despite this, London Zoo aims to try without the traditional star perfor-mers. Most of the bears have already gone and the famous terraces whe-re they were housed are, apart from two bears – a mother bear with a cub, deserted.

There are different opinions on zoos. A middle-aged woman called Annwas in no doubt. “I’m all for zoos. This is the only way the next genera-tion can see animals without travelling abroad. Their work is invaluab-le.” Zoos are not perfect places to live, but they have inspired children

who have gone on to become eco-activists. Alan, an elderly man who hasvisited the zoo – “an oasis in the middle of London” every day for thepast three years, was equally positive.

Mary Rosevear, director of the Federation of Zoos, believes that urbanzoos can survive the loss of their large animals. “A few years ago Edin-burgh Zoo decided they couldn’t keep elephants any more, but they didnot see a decrease in the number of visitors.”

The actress Virginia McKenna, founder of the Born Free foundation, who has campaigned for the removal of the elephants from London Zoo,is against Rosevear’s defence of urban zoos. “She’s looking at it from thehuman point of view. I’m trying to speak up for the animals’ needs. Thistype of zoo isn’t about wildlife the animals are living museum pieces. Anurban zoo is no place for animals. This is an opportunity for London Zooto transform the elephant and rhino pavilion into an educational centrewhere people can learn about conservation.”

Tekst 1.Speaker AI’m too young to bother myself with caring about my health. At 17,

I don’t have to worry about cholesterol, cancer or a heart attack. I eat wha-tever I like and feel good about it. I can’t imagine life without hambur-gers, chips, Coca-Cola and sweets. All those greens and working out eve-ry day is definitely not for me. I believe people are healthy when they en-joy life and accept themselves even if they are a bit overweight. That’swhat I feel about my life.

Speaker BMy parents have always been very much concerned about their health

and the health of their children. It’s partly because my grandparents diedof cancer when they were still middle-aged. My Mum is convinced wemight be at risk, so we try to follow a healthy lifestyle and have a check-up every year, you know, blood tests and some other tests. We eat a lotof fruit and vegetables and we care about how we prepare our meals. Weavoid frying meat and potatoes. I go to the gym twice a week and my pa-rents cycle and go jogging as often as possible.

Speaker CI don’t think you should torture yourself with all those healthy diets and

physical exercise. The diets are just a matter of fashion; they pass andthen come back after a few years. It’s all business. One year they say thatbutter is very unhealthy and you should only eat margarine. The next ye-ar some doctors publish alarming reports on people’s poor sight causedby the lack of vitamins that are found in butter. Besides, what’s the pointin caring about your health too much? After all you can have a fatal ac-cident even if you are very fit. It doesn’t mean that I’m killing myself withmy lifestyle, but I just don’t focus my life on what I eat and how muchSŁ

There are several good reasons for taking the train to York. The sta-tion’s right in the heart of the city and you won’t get stuck in any of York’shorrendous traffic jams.

Once you’ve arrived, you can’t miss the walk along the city walls. Mostof them are medieval, and running at almost three miles long, they arethe longest and best preserved in the country. From here you can admireYork’s famous Minster, one of the country’s most important sights. En-try is free to the main Minster although you are encouraged to make a do-nation.

At the foot of the Minster lie many of York’s prettiest streets, like thefamous Shambles, but you can also sneak away down little alleyways andperhaps visit the market where you never know what or who you mightfind. Yorkshire’s celebrity chef, Brian Turner, is the perfect guide to thecity’s food and drink festival, which is held every year in September.

York is one of the most haunted cities in Europe with 140 ghosts. Tofind out more you don’t even have to visit the dungeon join the compa-ny at the bar for an entertaining one-hour ghost cruise with a costumedstoryteller.

In our studio today we have a special guest. He’s won nine Olympicgold medals for the U.S., holds the record as the only man to capture thegold in the 100-metre, 200-metre, long jump, and 4x100-metre relay atthe same Olympic Games, and also holds the record as the only man towin the 100-metre twice. He calls Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzy, Ma-gic Johnson and Joe Montana close friends and is known as a nice guy.Ladies and gentlemen – Carl Lewis.

When did you start track and field? What got you started?I started when I was eight. My mother was a teacher and a ‘60s femi-

nist, so she wanted to start a track club for girls in my school, and since

I was surrounded by it, I took up running. However, my parents had mein all sorts of sports.

When you started running, did you realize that you were going to begreat?

No! I was awful when I started! I was only 5 feet 5 inches until the endof tenth grade, but by the time I graduated I was six feet. It was thanks tomy parents that I actually stuck with running. I’m sure I would have qu-it if it hadn’t been for them telling me not to give up.

Do you actually watch the Olympics? Yes, Sydney was the first Olympics that I attended as a spectator, and

Athens. In Athens, though, I didn’t watch much track and field, not be-cause I’m not interested in it any more, but because I wanted to see sportsI’d never watched before. I loved table tennis, and men’s volleyball. Youwouldn’t believe it, those guys are taller than basketball players!

What did you think of the 2004 Olympics in Athens? It was the best of all the Olympics I’ve been to. The location couldn’t

have been better, the people were laid-back and fun, the food was great, and the atmosphere was the best of all the games I’ve attended. I reallyenjoyed Los Angeles and Barcelona, but Athens was by far the best, plusI was able to appreciate the location even more because I wasn’t compe-ting.

What are your current projects? Do you still run?I moved to L.A. in ‘99 to pursue acting, and I’ve been in three films,

with one opening this year, “Tournament of Dreams”. I’m also in the pro-cess of developing a TV series. And I do still run, especially with my dogs, and I exercise in general because I like staying active.
