Apostolic Creed, Symbolum Apostolicum, developed in the West. The Roman Bishop, Pope Siricius, declared it an official Confession of Faith in 390 AD. It is the shortest and the most Gospel-oriented of the Three Ecumenical Creeds. But since modern, even English R.C.C., translations deviate from the Latin text, we need to reaffirm this personal declaration of universal salvation.

CREDO IN DEUM: (Latin) Patrem omnipotentem,

Creatorem caeli et terrae, et in Iesum Christum, Filium Eius unicum, Dominum nostrum,

Qui conceptus est de Spiritu Sancto, Natus ex Maria Virgine,

Passus sub Pontio Pilato, Crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus,

Descendit ad inferos, Tertia die resurrexit a mortuis,

I BELIEVE IN GOD: (English) The almighty Father,

General Structure and Content: There are not 3, but only 2 Articles, namely, CREDO 1 and 2: 1. CREDO 1 asserts the existence of God, and defines God as

a. Father, The Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and

b. Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord (ΚΥΡΙΟΣ, ), who in

2. CREDO 2, by His Spirit, restores human fellowship with God.

Details on the Name and the Essence of this Confession: It is not Symbolum Apostolorum; it is Symbolum Apostolicum. 1. It is not a historic faith of ‘Apostles,’ faith that ‘has been.’ 2. It is apostolic, my response to Christ’s Great Commission. 3. Not ‘They believed,’ not even ‘We believe,’ but I BELIEVE. 4. It is my personal statement of conviction and confidence.

Whereas, Matthew, Mark, and Luke record the historical event, the Apostle Paul conveys the benefit of that event to all – you. However, churches and individuals have imposed divisive interpretations, which contradict Apostolic doctrine, faith, and practice.

V. 24: The body, the Paschal Lamb, The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world, is not given TO us – it is IN BEHALF of us. V. 25: If “This were blood,” it would be a nominative case. The dative of means declares, “The Testament is by means of my blood.” Priests annually offered Paschal Lambs in temples. “The New Testament” is effective “whenever/wherever you may drink.”

The New Testament:

The Apostolic Creed, Symbolum Apostolicum, is the Western, Latin Confession, which Pope Siricius adopted (390 AD). It is a truly

universal Ecumenical Creed – the Gospel. Yet many translations (even English RCC) deviate from the Latin. We need to affirm again the unifying ecclesiastical Latin and Greek texts, which mitigate the linguistic Curse of Babel, and resolve contradictory theologies.
