These scholarships honor the memory of Bob & Dorothy, who taught music to

children irrespective of their ability to pay for lessons. Instead, Bob & Dorothy chose students who, like they did, demonstrated

a profound love and passion for music.

These GCTYO musicians were chosen for their love and passion for music:

The Gift of MusicGood afternoon and welcome to our first concert of the season and our first concert as the Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras (GCTYO). It has been an exciting few months of rehearsals. I have been listening and watching each of the ensembles as they’ve progressed since September.I have been thinking about the fact that this concert falls on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, and in that light, I share the following thoughts. For as long as I can remember, music has been something that I’ve been drawn to. My mom te lls me that when I was 6 months old, I started flapping my arms to classical music in the car...I guess not much has changed. As I began to learn the piano, and later the viola, I became aware that music is powerful. I knew that it stirred feelings within me and that I enjoyed the time I spent with it. What I hadn’t yet learned was the power that music has to connect people. In fact, it wasn’t until I was much older that I realized that the true gift of music and being a musician is being able to share music with others. Sharing music doesn’t only occur in concerts and recitals, but also in rehearsals, lessons and coaching sessions.I see this every time I come to GCTYO. I see the joy our students share as they play with each other, as they talk about their weeks and the things they have experienced. There is always conversation about the music they are learning, too. I see the care that they take during rehearsals, making sure that they are trying to do everything we ask of them. I see the sense of accomplishment they feel when a rehearsal goes really well, and yes, I see the frustration that occurs when things don’t go quite as they expected.I’ve seen the overwhelming emotion that happens when a piece of music speaks to someone in a very personal way. I must say that I experience this myself all the time, especially when I’m with my orchestra here. It is at these times that we are able to witness the gift of music. At GCTYO, we believe in the value and importance of sharing these gifts. It is at the very heart of what we do. Not only do we focus on learning to play music and learning what makes it work, but we ask each and every one of our students to put themselves out there and share their music with us, with those around them, and with you - their parents, relatives and friends. This year, we started a program that will allow our students to share their gifts outside the walls of our own rehearsal and concert spaces. Christopher HiseyMusic Director, Principal Orchestra Conductor

can volunteer to give lessons to other students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to take them. We are running two trial programs: a strings program at Assumption School in Fairfield and a winds and brass program after our rehearsals at Tomlinson Middle School with students from Project Music. Programs like these allow our students to give back to the community. As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the opportunity to share music with your children. I ask each of you to reflect on the following as you sit back and listen to this concert: What does music mean to you; what brought you to this place; and who first gave you the gift of music? I’m sure you will feel as grateful as I do for the connections we make through music.I wish you all a very safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving.

St. John has traveled to Latin America for appearances with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, the Sao Paulo Symphony, Rio de Janeiro’s Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira, SODRE in Montevideo, and the Sociedad Filarmónica de Lima in Peru. The Los Angeles Times wrote “Lara St. John happens to be a volcanic violinist with a huge, fabulous tone that pours out of her like molten lava. She has technique to burn and plays at a constant high heat.” St. John created her own label, Ancalagon, in 1999, and has recorded with the Royal Philharmonic, the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, and The Knights, for which she won the Juno award in 2011 for her Mozart album. Her Bach: The Six Sonatas and Partitas album was the best-selling double album on iTunes in 2007. In 2014, her Schubert album with Berlin Philharmonic harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, cellist Ludwig Quandt, and soprano Anna Prohaska was chosen as one of The Best CDs of Spring by Der Tagsesspiegel. MDR Figaro recommended the album for its “boundless enchantment.” Her 2015 album: Shiksa, had All About Jazz saying “Music like this is beyond imagination and talent. It exists only in the loosely-held molecules found on the razor’s edge of Creation.”St. John began playing the violin when she was two years old. She made her first appearance as soloist with orchestra at age four, and her European debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra when she was 10. She toured Spain, France, Portugal, and Hungary at ages 12 and 13, entered the Curtis Institute at 13, and spent her first summer at Marlboro three years later. Her teachers have included Felix Galimir and Joey Corpus. She performs on the 1779 “Salabue” Guadagnini thanks to an anonymous donor and records for Ancalagon Records.

Concert EtiquetteARRIVE ON TIME: Allow sufficient time to arrive and be seated before the performance begins. If you are delayed, wait for the end of a selection and start of applause to enter the concert hall and be seated. This shows consideration for the performers and fellow audience members.

ATTEND THE COMPLETE CONCERT: ALL of the performers have worked hard to prepare the program. Plan on seeing them all perform. A large part of the GCTYO experience is younger musicians seeing the older students perform.

DO NOT TALK DURING THE PERFORMANCE: An orchestral concert is not a place to hold a conversation. The background noise generated distracts those around you and can be heard in the audio on the recordings. Conversations are appropriate during periods of applause and intermissions.

APPLAUD ONLY AT THE END OF A PIECE: Wait for the conductor to lower his/her hands completely at the end of a selection. If the conductor’s hands remain raised after the orchestra has stopped playing, it means that the piece has additional movements that the conductor will begin shortly. When the conductor lowers his/her hands, it is the signal that all movements of the piece have been completed, and it is your signal to express your enjoyment through applause.

DO NOT BRING FOOD: Be sure that all members of your group have eaten prior to arriving at the concert. The noise generated by candy and food wrappers is distracting and inconsiderate of the performers and fellow audience members.

VIDEO TAPE FROM DESIGNATED AREAS ONLY: Videotaping at other locations obstructs and distracts those around you. See one of the ticket collectors or ushers if you would like assistance in locating a spot.

DO NOT USE FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY DURING THE PERFORMANCE:Flash photography can temporarily disrupt the vision of a performer and cause him/her to lose his/her place in the music or make unnecessary mistakes. Flash photography is also very distracting to other players and audience members.

ESCORT YOUNG CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES: Be sure to supervise all young children when entering or exiting the concert hall. Holding their hand during this process prevents them from getting lost and helps avoid running in an aisle which could result in injury. This is especially true when the concert hall is darkened. Excursions should only be made during periods of applause or at intermission.
