Quick Facts and ContentsA staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation.

More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2010-11 school year, showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With the announcement that the department will begin sponsoring women’s golf starting in 2012-13, the program has expanded to 22 intercollegiate teams – including eight new sports that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone.

And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Four teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2010-11 and three Valiant squads (women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. 13 of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the eighth title in 12 seasons for the women’s hockey team and the second straight title for men’s golf. In addition, a pair of Manhattanville squads (men’s hockey and women’s hockey) spent much of the year nationally ranked while two more programs (men’s basketball and men’s golf) topped the list of teams receiving votes nationally in their respective polls over the course of the year.

On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2010-11 as well, including a pair of Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 32 combined All-Conference honorees. In the last 10 years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well.

But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.20 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2011 semester and the fact that all but four Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, the department boasted its fi rst CoSIDA Academic All-American in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also shattered its previous best with 114 student-athletes named Academic All-Conference honorees.

Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student-athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the women’s hockey “Think Pink” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community.

“To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” - Jeanne d’Albret

Manhattanville Athletics AdministrationDirector of Athletics Keith LevinthalNinth Year • Hobart ’95

Keith Levinthal begins his ninth full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2011-12 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal will now concentrate full time on keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight.

Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52

conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year.

As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year

honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings.

Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2010-11, as 15 teams participated in conference postseason play and four squads won a conference regular-season or tournament title. The Valiant women’s soccer, women’s hockey and men’s golf teams won conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament during the season, while the men’s basketball team achieved the fi rst D3Hoops.com national ranking in program history and the men’s golf team received votes in multiple national coaches polls for the fi rst time. Off the fi eld, a program-record 114 Valiant student-athletes were named to their respective conference Academic Honor Rolls as well, while the program also earned its fi rst CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American selection in 27 years and a pair of CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District honorees.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced

volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history.

Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed

for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason

play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions.

But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically.

A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included:

Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student-athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.

Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni.

Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

Manhattanville Coaching StaffHead Coach Eric LangFirst Season • American International ’98

Eric Lang was named the second head coach in the history of the Manhattanville men’s hockey program in October 2011 and begins his first season with the men’s team after three successful seasons at the helm of the nationally recognized Manhattanville women’s hockey program.

Prior to taking over the Valiant women’s team, Lang spent two seasons as an assistant men’s hockey coach at American International College, an NCAA Division I athletic program in Springfield, Mass. As an assistant at AIC, Lang was responsible for conducting video analysis and film breakdown of opponents and he also worked with the defense and power-play units, the latter of which improved from 59th to 31st in the nation in 2007-08. Lang’s Yellow Jacket players had tremendous success off the ice

as well, as 21 out of 25 players earned a 3.0 GPA in 2007-08.

In three seasons with the Manhattanville women’s hockey team, Lang has shown the ability to maintain a high level of success at a nationally ranked program.

In his third season at the helm, Lang’s massive recruiting efforts finally came to fruition with an ECAC East Conference Tournament championship and the program’s eighth NCAA Tournament berth. The Valiants finished the season with a 19-8-2 record and a #8 ranking in the final USCHO.com Division III National poll of the year. Finishing the year second in the ECAC East standings, the team went on the road to stun #3 and top-seeded Norwich, 4-2, in the championship game to clinch the NCAA Tournament appearance.

Lang completely overhauled the Valiant roster in his second season with the team and still managed to lead a group with just nine upperclassmen to the program’s sixth ECAC East Conference regular-season championship, the team’s ninth consecutive top-seed in the ECAC East Conference Tournament, and a 19-7-1 record. A tireless recruiter, he brought in a 16-person recruiting class before the season that included five of the team’s top seven scorers, three of the team’s six All-Conference performers and AHCA second-team All-American Katie Little. The Valiants also recorded a pair of wins over nationally ranked foes in the first semester, including a 3-2 win over #3 Elmira and a 7-0 thrashing of eighth-ranked and eventual national runner-up Norwich.

In his first season of 2008-09, Lang led Manhattanville to a 20-7-0 overall record and the top seed in the ECAC East Conference Tournament. The Valiant squad featured five ECAC East All-Conference performers, including ECAC East Player of the Year and AHCA second-team All-American Holly Nonis.

Manhattanville also has excelled in the classroom under Lang’s watch, putting a 31 players on the ECAC East All-Academic team in three seasons and posting a team cumulative GPA of 3.35.

A 1998 graduate of American International, Lang was a four-year letterwinner for the Yellow Jackets, serving as team captain his junior and senior years. He was also the recipient of an ECAC Merit Medal as well as American International’s Henry Butova Leadership Award, which recognizes a varsity hockey player that demonstrates outstanding leadership ability. In his career, he scored 25 goals and tallied 34 assists for 59 points. As a sophomore, Lang led the Yellow Jackets with 14 assists.

Prior to his work at AIC, Lang worked for the National Hockey League as an off-ice official, assisting in game scoring and analysis. Lang also served as the Head Hockey Coach for Byram Hills High School in Armonk, N.Y. from 2002-2006.

Lang resides in White Plains, N.Y., with his wife Christine and their two children, Addison and T.J.

The Lang Ledger

After a stellar four-year career on the ice for Manhattanville, Arlen Marshall ’10 is back for his second season as an assistant men’s hockey coach with the Valiants in 2011-12.

Marshall plays a vital role in all aspects of running the nationally recognized Valiant

men’s hockey program, including recruiting, scouting, game and practice preparation, and academic monitoring.

A two-year captain, Marshall had one of the most prolific careers in Valiant hockey

history. He completed his career as one of just three Manhattanville players to reach the 100-point plateau thanks to 38 goals and 64 assists in 105 career games, ranking third in career points, fourth in assists and sixth in goals all-time at the school. In addition, Marshall also left second in career games played and sixth in power-play goals as well in

the Manhattanville record books. In his senior season, Marshall set new career highs with 26 assists and 35 points to help lead the Valiants to the

ECAC West Conference Tournament championship, one of three ECAC West Tournament titles that Manhattanville achieved in his four years. The Valiants also reached a pair of NCAA Tournaments and finished each season in the top-10 in the nation according to the USCHO.com Division III National Poll while he was a part of the squad.

He graduated from Manhattanville in 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science. A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, Marshall currently resides in Purchase as he pursues his master’s degree

in Sport Business Management at Manhattanville.

The ECAC West ConferencePerennially one of the toughest conferences in Division III, the ECAC West Conference has provided Manhattanville with a very tough challenge throughout the program’s history.

The ECAC West Conference has consistently produced national-championship caliber programs and, despite only fielding five teams, is arguably the strongest top-to-bottom conference in the nation. Last year, all five conference squads were nationally ranked and at multiple points in the year four of the five ECAC West teams were in the top-15 USCHO.com Div. III national rankings at the same time. As a result, every ECAC West game is vital on both a conference and national level.

Since its inception in 1999, Manhattanville has been one of the ECAC West’s premier programs, leading all current teams with six conference championships (two regular-season titles, four tournament titles).

2011-12 Manhattanville Men’s Hockey Media Guide 7

Manhattanville 2011-12 Season PreviewIt has been a long eight months for the Manhattanville men’s

hockey team, as the Valiants have had way too much time to stew over a fifth-place ECAC West Conference finish in 2010-11. And for the first time in program history, the task of making that memory go away will be bestowed upon a new face, as the Valiants begin a new era of hockey in 2011-12.

Just a few weeks before the start of the year, Eric Lang was named the second head coach in Manhattanville men’s hockey history, as the former Valiant women’s coach was tabbed to replace program architect and founder Keith Levinthal, who stepped down in mid-October. After guiding the Manhattanville women to a conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth last season, Lang will look to bring that same success to a men’s side that finished fifth in the ECAC West Conference a year ago.

Seniors Evan Michalchuk and Bill Silengo will help Lang with the transition to the men’s side, as the pair assume the mantle of team captains this season. Michalchuk earns a letter for the third straight season after serving as an assistant captain for the last two years, while Silengo will wear a letter for the first time as a senior. Both players will be counted on for both on- and off-ice leadership in their final seasons and, along with junior assistant captain Ron Smith, will play a major role in the success of the team in 2011-12.

The Valiants do have key pieces that need to be replaced heading into the season, notably All-American forward Mickey Lang and blueliners Artem Gumenyuk and Sasha Romanenko. In all, the squad lost about 33 percent of its offensive output in eight players from a season ago, including Lang’s team-leading 16 goals and 27 points. Nevertheless, the team’s next three point-getters all return for 2011-12 along with an experienced blue line crew and battle-tested goaltender, and all signs point to a rapid return to normalcy for the Valiants.

FORWARDSManhattanville will have to deal with the loss of Lang’s offensive firepower,

but the team does return a strong group of forwards looking to help fill the void and fill the net.

Leading the returners is junior Brett Skalski, who had a breakout season as a sophomore with 13 goals and seven assists for 20 points to rank second on the squad in goals and points. One of only five Valiants to play in all 26 games last year, Skalski will be counted on to maintain or even improve his offensive totals as a main cog in the Valiant offensive machine as a junior.

The team will again count on Michalchuk in all areas this year, as he will wear a letter for the third straight season and also returns as the team’s second leading scorer coming back in 2011-12. An assistant captain last year, he tied for the team lead with 12 assists and also netted six goals for 18 points, including a team-best three game-winning markers.

In addition to Skalski, the Valiants also boast a strong supporting group of junior forwards who will look to play a more vital role in the offense. Scott Hudson had three goals and seven assists in just 11 games last year and will look to return to a form that earned him ECAC West Rookie of the Year honors in 2009-10. Smith will assume more of a leadership role as an assistant captain and also hopes to up his production after a three-goal, seven-assist effort playing in all 26 games a year ago.

Classmate Jason Bowles ranked second on the team and led all forwards last season with a +10 rating, and also had 11 points on four goals and seven helpers. In addition, Brendan Turner had three goals and five assists in his first healthy season with the team and Derek Serdachny added a goal and an assist in 18 games; both players will attempt to move up the depth chart in their third years.

A pair of sophomores, Brian Elser and Luc Van Natter, had excellent rookie campaigns with the team a year ago and will look for continued development. Elser finished last year third on the team with eight goals and also chipped in six assists for 14 points, while Van Natter came in right behind with 13 points on six goals and seven assists. Both players will be counted upon for increased production.

Sophomores Louie Balzano and Craig Simchuk also will look for

increased time on the ice in their second seasons, after both players recorded two points in limited action a year ago. Balzano had two goals in four games as a freshman, while Simchuk chipped in a pair of assists in 16 contests.

Lang also welcomes five freshmen who will vie for playing time right from the start. Nick Barbera, Luke Challier and Mark Rivera

have made strong impressions in the first few weeks of camp, while classmates Eric McClure and Paul Sirignano also have shown

signs of promise early on.

DEFENSEMENManhattanville returns a strong and experienced

group of defensemen for the 2011-12 season, as the Valiants return six of their top eight blueliners from a year ago and also welcome in a trio of talented newcomers looking to crack the starting six.

A pair of offensive and defensive threats on the blue line are senior Marcus von Sydow and sophomore Adam Young, both of whom recorded double-digit points a year ago. Von Sydow led all Valiant defensemen with 13 points on three goals and 10 assists in 23 games, while Young added seven helpers to his three markers for a 10-point freshman campaign.

Another pair of experienced blueliners, seniors Silengo and Dillon O’Hara, are also back to anchor the defensive unit. O’Hara had a goal and six assists in 20 games a year ago, with Silengo also chipping in a goal in 18 appearances. Both players will need to step up their games on the ice for the team to succeed in 2011-12.

Sophomore Marc Zanoni and senior Niclas Wennerlof also will see plenty of ice time this year as well. Zanoni had a goal and two assists in 20 games in 2010-11, while Wennerlof had one helper in 18 appearances and also provides versatility as a defensive-minded forward.

In addition, a trio of freshmen also will look to make their marks early and often this season as well, as Rich Meyer, Joel Rosenberg and J.P. Witkop hope to challenge the veterans and make their way into the starting six.

GOALIESFor the second straight year, senior Pierre-Olivier Lemieux enters the

season as the Valiants’ top netminder and looks to carry the team toward a conference title. As a junior, Lemieux started 21 of 26 games and posted a 2.21 goals against average and .915 save percentage, while his 515 saves ranked third on the program’s single-season list. Already first in career shutouts (seven) and second in career wins (32) at Manhattanville, Lemieux is poised to have his best season yet as a senior.

Lemieux will be pushed for playing time by a pair of promising freshmen, as Tommy Trowell and Brian Fleming come to Purchase in 2011-12 with All-Star junior resumes. Trowell spent last year alongside classmates McClure

and Sirignano with the Thorold Blackhawks of the OJHL and was named the league’s Goaltender of the Year, while Fleming was an AJHL All-Star with the Northern Cyclones last season.

SCHEDULEManhattanville will get a good idea of where the team

is at before the season even starts, as the squad makes the trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the USA NTDP Under-18 Team on October 29. And then the real season starts with two very big games at Playland Ice Casino, as the Valiants welcome Hobart and preseason #6 Elmira to Rye on November 4 and 5, respectively.

One advantage the Valiants have this season is the plethora of home games, as 13 of the team’s 24 regular-season contests are to be played at Playland. Five of the team’s first six ECAC West

games of the year are scheduled for the friendly confines of home, meaning that the team

has the chance to jump out to a quick conference start before closing the

schedule with six road games (five in conference) in the last four weeks of the year.
