This year’s C.S. Lewis Festival takes its theme from the much-loved Chronicles of Narnia. During the five days of the festival we’ll transport you through the wardrobe into the incredible imaginative world of C.S. Lewis and his characters.

With plenty of family-friendly events, a huge range of informative talks and discussions and lots of opportunities to explore your own imagination through bespoke workshops, the C.S. Lewis Festival 2019 has something to offer everyone.

This year we’ll also be showcasing the work of other great imagination heroes who, like Lewis, have used their creativity to help us see the world in a slightly different way. Prepare to have your own imagination stimulated as you make your way through our festival programme.

AT A GLANCE - BACK COVER

One of the great strengths of the arts is their ability to bring people and communities closer together. With the annual C.S. Lewis Festival, we have the opportunity to see this principle in action. Lewis himself said that, “Friendship is born at the moment when one man says to another, ‘What! You too?’”. How many friendships will be built over the course of the coming days of the festival, how many unforgettable experiences and memories will be shared, how many differences put aside, as people from all parts of the city converge on east Belfast to celebrate the extraordinary creative legacy of the great writer.

The Arts Council is proud to support the C.S. Lewis Festival. A significant portion of our support comes from funds raised through the National Lottery, which this year celebrates its 25th birthday. I would take this occasion to acknowledge the invaluable role that the National Lottery plays in enabling arts organisations throughout Northern Ireland to deliver high-quality, inspiring and enriching arts and cultural experiences for everyone to enjoy. With the help of this investment, Eastside Arts is achieving great, ambitious things, as it continues to drive forward the creative and cultural renaissance of east Belfast.

FRIENDS AND MONSTERS: BOOK LAUNCH ANTHOLOGY OF TEEN WRITING INSPIRED BY MARY SHELLEY’S FRANKENSTEIN

TUES 26 NOV • 6PM FIGHTING WORDS BELFAST @ SKAINOS CENTRE • FREE

“This not like any book you have ever read. It will make you belly-laugh, give you goose-bumps & tie knots in your brain.” MYRA ZEPF To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Fighting Words Belfast created ‘Friends and Monsters’ - a cross-community creative writing project for post-primary students, exploring themes of obsession, grief, revenge and loneliness. The result is this collective book - sometimes dark, often silly, always surprising.

With stories and poems by young writers from four Belfast schools and the Write Club at Duncairn, this anthology is a rollercoaster ride through the weird, the wonderful, the creepy and the crazy. This is what it looks like when you unleash the hurricane force of teen imaginations into the wild. It can get weird. We can’t wait to show you.

JACK’S JOURNEY A MUSICAL ODYSSEY

FRI 22 NOV • 7.30PM • LANYON TRAIN STATION • £3

Jack’s Journey is a whimsical re-imagining of the childhood journeys of C.S. Lewis as he ‘stops’ along the way to his eventual career as the writer of the Narnian Chronicles.

The story is told through music memories and significant episodes from his school days, up to his entry into Oxford. Living almost entirely in his imagination as a small boy, the seeds of the Narnian world are already beginning to grow in his writing and drawings. Jack’s Journey concludes with a celebratory anthem that heralds the arrival of the great hero of the first of the Narnian Chronicles.

C.S Lewis (Jack) attended Campbell College in east Belfast and this tribute to his childhood journey is written by Adeline Dinsmore and David Catherwood and performed by pupils from Campbell College, St. Joseph’s and Strandtown Primary Schools, with members of the Ulster Orchestra.

HOPS AND GLORY FRI 22 NOV • 7PM HARLAND & WOLFF STAFF CLUB FREE / DONATIONS TO THE LARDER FOOD BANK AT ST. CHRISTOPHER’S CHURCH

Back for a third year! C.S. Lewis had an uneasy relationship with hymns, considering them to be “fifth-rate poems set to sixth-rate music.” Nevertheless, he saw their merit in bringing together people of different outlooks and education.

There is a grand tradition within the Christian church of bringing together hymn-singing and pub culture. Come along for an evening of communal hymn-singing, compered by the Reverend Adrian McCartney and featuring The Bright Hour band.

Bring a friend and bring your voices!
