BER Fairweather Proberts currently has 17 Catholic and State projects under the Building the Education Revolution (BER) program. These projects range from a value of $1M to $3M and build on long standing relationships and experience in this sector. The focus of our designs is to deliver quality educational spaces that adhere to the values and integrity of the school within a commercially driven framework.

kAUST BEACON The Beacon is a symbol for the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) on the Red Sea at Thuwul, near Jeddah and approximately an hour north of Mecca in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The contemporary interpretation of a lighthouse draws inspiration from ancient Arabic maritime traditions and artwork of the Red Sea. It continues our collaboration with UAP in the design of unique projects.

TOwNSvILLE CENTRAL Situated in the historic precinct fronting Flinders Street between the CBD and Townsville Railway Station, Central is a mixed-use development comprising of commercial and residential space. Designed as a gateway to the seven-stage master planned development, ‘Central Commercial’ forms part of Stage 1 of the redevelopment. It utilises a range of simple materials to provide an interesting façade treatment while utilising screening elements to respond to its tropical location.

NOURISh ORgANIC Nourish Wholefoods Market, at Ferry Road Market on the Gold Coast, focuses on reconnecting and rekindling a passion for great tasting produce. The store is designed to display a variety of produce in a cohesive manner which encourages customers to meander amongst the products and indulge themselves. The material palette was kept minimal to feature the recycled timber shelves and their bountiful displays. This shelving, in combination with the refurbished concrete slab and the warm tones throughout, reinforces the atmosphere of a traditional market.

wOOLLOONgABBA This environmentally responsive design offers an exciting preview of the new Woolloongabba. A clever mix of residential, home office and retail allows maximum diversity and flexibility and provides the residents and small businesses a cost effective entry into the market. The building street-front is honest and simple with an elegant precast panel. The monolithic rear metal screen allows light to filter through during the day while providing maximum protection from low western sun. The apartments are arranged simply to maximise air movement through to the breezeway atrium.

The naming of the building, Mulwith, refers to the Yorkshire birthplace of Mary Ward who is the founder of the Loreto sisters. The design of the building involved a strong collaboration with the school. “DO GOOD AND DO IT WELL” is the ethos of the founder of the Loreto sisters and provided inspiration and guidance to the project team.

The building adopts a world-class approach to Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD), without compromising the indoor climate and overall project budget. Its unique in-slab passive cooling / heating design provides high levels of indoor environment quality at low energy and water consumption rates. The building and building services have been designed and managed to reduce point source pollution and have a high recycled content. Water conservation measures are in place throughout the building and surrounding landscape and the building incorporates an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System accreditation.

An important element of the project is a steel screen that has multiple uses of providing sun shading to the west, safety for students and an engaging presence in its context. The screen is an abstracted form derived from the life of Mary Ward and connects the building to the school through its strong symbolism.

The pilgrim life and teaching of Mary Ward took her to London, Liege, Cologne, Paris, Lyon, Munich, Rome, Naples, Vienna and Prague. The form of the screen is generated by locating these places as points on the façade and joining them to represent the journeys of Mary Ward. The resulting shapes and forms provide a subtly changing face to the screen.

The Fairweather Proberts Team at the Artisan Patrons Christmas Drinks officiated by the Honourable Anna Bligh MP on 24th November 2009.

2009 has been an exciting and progressive year for Fairweather Proberts Architects; changing conditions in urban development has seen us respond and explore new ways of living, working and playing in our cities. The Commonwealth Stimulus Package has drawn on our education experience to continue our relationship with a number of schools in creating better places for education.

In a year of change we have continued our involvement with unique projects both locally and abroad. Liam Proberts and Chris Chetham have welcomed Jason Hedges and Terry McQuillan as Directors and Saskia Ruijs as our new Interiors Principal.

The Mulwith building at Loreto College Coorparoo was conceived as a home for reflection, art, learning support, learning and teaching for the students and college community. The project is the culmination of our 12-year relationship with the college.
