On June 27, 2006, I was at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, NJ, awaiting the birth of my first child. It was the first of many sleepless nights I’ve had since then; Shoshana arrived at 11:27PM, keeping her mother and I in suspense for more than 24 hours after we’d checked in to the hospital.
Needless to say, she was worth the wait.
Nearly 13 years later, I’ll have the privilege to call her up to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. As the day grows near, I realize that my thoughts and emotions are similar to those of many parents whose children reach this milestone, so I’m not under the illusion that what I’m feeling is particularly unique.
But it’s fair to say that not many B’nai Mitzvah students grow up as children of clergy, reliant on the kindness of their community to get through their growing pains.
I distinctly remember our first Shabbat after moving to Charleston. Shoshana, fresh off her third birthday, spent our first Friday night service repeatedly jumping off the steps of the bimah, frightening and enchanting others at the same time. She has, at different times over the years, danced on the bimah during a tuneful prayer, and raised her hand during my divrei Torah to add her thoughts to the day’s topic. She also has discovered a couple of favorite nooks and crannies in our building, finding places to be at peace in the midst of a crowded occasion.
In other words, our congregation has watched her grow up. When I decided to pursue a senior pulpit position, one of the most important things I wanted to find was a community that encouraged kids to be included and to be themselves. Synagogue Emanu-El has lived up to that ideal and then some.
So as Shoshana’s Bat Mitzvah speedily approaches, I feel gratitude not only for the young woman Shoshana has become, but also for the giving and kind congregation where she has had the privilege to spend her formative years.
If you’re in town, I hope you’ll share in my family’s gratitude on Saturday, May 4th. Thank you all for being there for Shoshana throughout ups and downs, successes and struggles, joy and sadness. Her celebration is, in large part, a tribute to our synagogue and the people who make it great.

Hoping that you and your family had a meaningful Pesach. In spite of tornado threats, our first night seder went off without a hitch. The office team and the rabbi judiciously monitored the situation, always concerned about congregant and staff safety. What would we do without our resident meteorologist providing minute-by-minute advice? Thank you, Dan Greenstein.
Informative presentations and thoughtful questions were the hallmark of our congregation meeting. A special thank-you to Officer Matt Tulla from the Charleston Police Department SWAT Team. We have every reason to be proud of our officer team and Board of Trustees. Please join me in thanking Ellen Steinberg, chair of the nominating committee, and the talented committee Ellen brought together. Mark your calendar for the May 18th installation, our chance to say thank you to the existing officer team and board and welcome the new.
Our thanks to Scott Sternfeld, Gabe Bluestein, Mike Mills, and Alan Isaacson, whose terms have expired. Each has made a meaningful impact on our synagogue. Lest you think they are retiring, rest assured that each has either accepted a committee position or are weighing alternatives to continue to serve. In the June Scroll we will announce 2019-2020 Committee Chairs. Stay tuned. It is your chance to volunteer.
Below is the newly-elected and returning officers and Board of Trustees:
Finally, have you bought your raffle tickets? Don’t be left out of the three chances to win cash – $10,000, $2500 or $1000 – and help our synagogue balance the budget. See you at the fun packed Spring Fling on May 19th!

S I S T E R H O O D — G L O R I A A D E L S O N
I hope everyone had a peaceful and sweet Passover! April saw Sisterhood hosting the annual conference for Southern Region, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (see pictures below). While small in numbers, the conference was mighty in its message! The conference opened with Dr. Pamela Nadell speaking on her new book, America’s Jewish Women: A History From Colonial Times to Today. Dr. Nadell is the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender History and Director of Jewish Studies at American University. She has authored several other books and will be the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism book club author and scholar for May. All Sisterhood members are invited to participate in her events at no charge. Contact me at [email protected] for details to register! We also heard Rabbi Rosembaum tell us about the mitzvah of gleaning and then heard Jill Levy tell us how we, as women, can lead the way to help feed the hungry through gleaning. Jill is the Chair of the Board of Fields to Families, a non-profit aimed at ensuring fresh food is available to the hungry within the Charleston area. For more information and/or to register, please go to www.fieldstofamilies.org . On the second day, Women of Temple Israel (WOTI) spoke to us about the effect of rebranding their Sisterhood and the effect it had on its membership. Then Anita Zucker spoke to us on her life’s journey doing Tikun Olam! She had the women enthralled with all she had done and gave us tips on what we can do to help make a better world. Special thank you to Rabbi and to our Sisterhood women, Anita and Jill, who showed us what women can do to bring about change! This conference could not have happened without the hard work of Joan Halushka, Linda Krawcheck, Brenda Lederman, Sheryl Gallatollie, and Joan Feldman. Thank you so much for helping to make the conference a success! And, special thank you to Miriam Wilanchosky for her help, not only for selling raffle tickets for the Region Education Fund, but also for helping me physically fold up the conference! I failed to plan for that part! And, a very special thank you to Kelly Hampton and Leah Bowzard for the support as always. And, a very, very special thank you to Daphne Hubara who not only led services Monday morning with Torah reading in her outstanding and impressive manner, but worked with Sisterhood conference women while holding religious school. Thank you Daphne for your cooperation and team work! Mazel Tov to Rabbi Adam Rosenbaum and Ellen Miriam Brandwein on the upcoming Bat Mitzvah of their daughter Shoshana! Sisterhood Emanu-El is honored to participate in this special event. Most of us have watched Shoshana grow from a little girl, Shoshie, to this beautiful young woman, Shoshana! We are very proud of you, Shoshana! Mazel Tov to the new Synagogue board to be installed this month. And, Mazel Tov to all who have high school and college graduates this year. Sisterhood is still looking for a few good women to help us for next year. We have an opening for a Membership Chair! The pay is outstanding, the hours are flexible and the working conditions excellent! Applications should be forwarded to me at [email protected]. All applications will be reviewed! We also have openings for vice presidents. All interests should be addressed to the above email address. B’shalom, Gloria

Join us for Anniversary Shabbat on
Saturday, May 11th
The first Friday night Men’s Club Shabbat was a big success. The Men’s Club,
led by the Rabbi, chanted the first half of the service and Mitch Gilbert led the
remaining portion of the service. The dinner was the first of its kind and a success
with 100 people in attendance.
The subject of “Hearing Men’s Voices” was well-received, with the
congregation taking part. The Windows program is off and running and we are going
to move to a schedule of every other Thursday.
The newer younger members are giving the Club a big boost and we would
like to invite additional young members to become active.
The next Men’s Club meeting will be held on May 22nd at 7PM, the location is
The Kickin’ Chicken on Sam Ritttenberg. Please bring your ideas of new programs or
events for the Club.

We hope that lighting your Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle added meaning to your commemoration of those whose lives were lost the Holocaust. All donations will be used to send our Confirmation Class students on a trip of a lifetime to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. Synagogue Emanu-El Men’s Club wants to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous donation. If
you have yet to make a donation, we hope that this was an oversight and that you will join us in helping our synagogue honor the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and ensuring that another Holocaust will never happen. Your participation is another link that strengthens our Jewish people from one generation to the next.

Newly elected 2019-2020 COSY Co-Presidents Lily Bluestein & Tricia Eisenhart share their goals for the upcoming year: Our first goal is to improve communication. Sometimes knowing when and where events are can get confusing. Hearing about what is happening from a friend is helpful, but sometimes people forget about the event or it is too last-minute for someone to make it. We want to make sure that events are as clear as possible for everyone. One way to do this is by revamping the COSY Instagram. Many people have Instagram and check it regularly. Posting pictures from events and about upcoming events will be an easy way for everyone, especially new members, to stay informed about what is happening. We would also post calendars with all of the upcoming events to help everyone keep their schedules free so they can come. Another way is through email and Facebook. Although people don’t tend to check their emails and FB as often as their Instagram, sending out information about events through either platform is a helpful reminder. Next, we would love to have more events. We’ve always had a ton of fun at conventions and Fourth Fridays, but we want to expand our horizons and do even more. We want to incorporate more COSY Shabbats, more lock-ins, more fun/casual events, and maybe even a Beach Retreat this year (fingers crossed). Fundraising is always a great way to raise money for these events, so we want to do more of that as well. We’d also love to send out surveys and polls before and after events to help coordinate with people and help us see how you guys feel about the events we’re doing, so that we can have the best COSY possible. Our third goal is to make COSY more inclusive. COSY already is an inclusive chapter, but we feel that we have the potential to be even better. One way of doing this is by making sure that anyone who wants to lead a program can. We would do this by sending out surveys about what people are interested in doing at events. We believe that COSY is not a hierarchy, and that any Bear should be able to express their ideas and lead programs if they are interested. And last but not least, our final goal: to increase COSY ruach! Now we know how much y’all love and support our chapter. But we want the world to see it too! We want to show you guys and everyone else what it means to be a Bear, and we want to remind everyone of what COSY once was and what it could be. We can do this through bringing back old COSY traditions and mixing them in with the new ones (cue Elan and his step-dances). We want to create new COSY cheers, new COSY spirit, and what we’re most excited about … COSY REGALIA!! Although our shirts are super cute, we would love to update them to the current decade. We love all things COSY: socks, stickers, pins, blankets, etc. and we know you guys do too! This could also be a great way for us to raise money for SA/TO and to increase COSY pride at the same time. As our super lit rapper name (Lil Tricky) suggests, we can work together to make everyone’s COSY dreams come true! We can’t wait to get COSY off of Soundcloud and on to the Hot 100. Let’s make this year as sick as our beatz.

Many thanks to Ellen Nadler for hosting our April Sisterhood book
club and leading our review of George Orwell’s 1984. The group discussed
the threat of totalitarian regimes throughout history and the parallels to
the book’s dystopian society. The ultimate question emerged:
Is there a risk today of an Orwellian future?
Emanu-El and KKBE combined forces to provide A Different Taste of Charleston at the Spirited Brunch on Sunday, April 28th! More than two dozen houses of
worship welcomed visitors across downtown.
Please make sure to visit our synagogue atrium to view the magnificent window
recently installed to honor Ben and Flossie Ginsberg Arnold. Though residing in
Columbia, Ben felt a strong affinity for Synagogue Emanu-El. Norman and Gerry Sue Arnold made the gift to honor the late
Norman Arnold’s parents.
As you see from this photograph (thank you Mickey Bagg), the colors are vibrant
jewel tones. The star of David is embedded throughout the design. The
theme is the biblical seven species, shivat haminim, that have a special role in the first
fruits brought to the Temple in Jerusalem. The Arnolds wanted the
window to be informative, communicating an aura of dignity.
We are honored to remember Ben and Flossie Arnold with this window that contemplates God’s sacred creation.

L’DOOR VA-DOOR Have you moved into a new home?
Do you have doorposts that don’t have mezuzot? It’s considered a mitzvah to hang a
mezuzah (an ornament with a small scroll containing the words of the Shema) on most of our homes’ doorposts. Rabbi Rosenbaum would be pleased to come to your home to help you hang your mezuzot with proper
blessings. This occasion can be simple and private, or more elaborate if you choose.
Please be in touch with the Rabbi if you’re interested
in adding a Jewish flavor to your home.
