1st Sunday of Advent Page 4

Beginning this weekend, on the first Sunday of Advent, you are invited to take and create a Crown Lantern for the Prince of Peace whose Incarnation (birthday) we celebrate each year on December 25. Scripture readings are provided for each day of Advent, beginning November 27, as well as suggestions for acts of kindness and service to others. Simply read the prayer and Scripture for the day, perform the act of kindness or any other good deed, and then punch out the removable pieces in the crown. Place a candle in-side the crown and keep watch as the light grows brighter day by day! Crowns available at mass.

Donate Men’s Jeans, Shoes or a Sleeping Bag

for the Homeless

The homeless are just that—homeless. They wear the same clothes day and night and carry their possession with them. With

cold weather upon us, they need washable sleeping bags, light-weight blankets, and small waterproof tarps.

The homeless in our area - who are pre-

dominately men —need jeans, work boots, tennis shoes, sweatshirts, rain

ponchos and socks (L). They also need warm outdoor jackets, preferably weath-

er-proof, that are large enough to accommodate multiple layers of clothing underneath. (No dress jackets or coats, please!)

Adopt-a-Family

This year our Adopt-a-Family program will be coordinated

through Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), our partner in serving the poor and home-

less on Fridays at San Felipe Chapel.

To adopt a family please call, email or visit FAM before Wednesday, December 14 and

ask to adopt a St. Edward or San Felipe de Jesus family. You will be asked to purchase gifts for the children, and experience the joy of delivering your gifts to the family’s home

before Christmas.

Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) 1030 Calle Negocio, San Clemente

(949) 492-8477 Open: Monday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Donate a Toy for a Child or

a Gift Card for a Teen

Help bring joy to a child this Christmas by donating a toy or a gift card. These gifts will be given to poor children at the Children’s

Christmas Party hosted by Family Assistance Ministries (FAM), our

partner in serving the poor and homeless on Fridays at San Felipe Chapel.

TOYS: for children 0 thru 12 years.

Please leave an unwrapped new toy in the box marked “Toys” in the back of church no later than Sunday, December 11th.

GIFT CARDS: for teens 13 thru 17 years. Please put a gift card in

the Parish Office TEEN GIFT BOX no later than Sunday, December 11th.

Donate a Gift Card for the Poor

Give joy anonymously to someone by donating a gift card for the poor in our community.

You can support the outreach efforts of St. Vincent de Paul by taking an envelope from the Gift Card Tree in the back of church and returning it to the St. Edward Parish Office by Monday, December 12 with a gift card, cash or check. We suggest gift cards from food stores or from stores like Target or Wal-Mart. Your gifts will be used during the holidays and throughout the year to help the poor. (Checks may be written to St. Vincent de Paul OR to St. Edward with SVDP on the memo line. )

St. Matthew’s Financial Corner ( Former Tax Collector & Patron Saint of ‘Money’ / Feast Day Sept 21st ) Turn Your TAXABLE RMD (Required Mini-mum Distributions) into Charitable Donations.

IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70 1/2 and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless of whether the is needed. These annual withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contri-bution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount without reporting additional income.

This provision may be especially attractive for retirees who don’t need all the income from their IRA to meet current living expens-es. By donating the money to your charity, you can enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to a worthy cause while effectively lowering your tax bill. See Your Tax, & Financial Advisor and/or Contact Barbara Belavic at 429.2874 or [email protected].

We now will receive a $100,660rebate if Everyone fulfills their pledge.
