    LESSON

GRACE  Grace is God’s love for us.

    Year A1st Quarter

    Lesson 1

    God Made My World

ReferencesGenesis 1:1-2:3; Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 44-51.

    Memory Verse“Everything [God] . . . made . . . was . . . good” (Genesis 1:31, ICB).

    ObjectivesThe children will:

Know that God made the world because He loves them.Feel happy about God’s world.Respond by thanking God for the world He made.

    The Message

The Bible Lesson at a GlanceIn six days God creates a beautiful

world for us to enjoy. He makes every-thing we could ever need for physical life. But more than that, He makes a world of

beauty to enrich our lives every day.

This is a lesson about grace. Young children can grasp the idea

that God made our world for us becauseHe loves us. This lesson tells childrenabout all those beautiful things andencourages them to enjoy what Godhas made and to thank Him for it.

Teacher Enrichment“As the earth came forth from the

hand of its Maker, it was exceedinglybeautiful. Its surface was diversified withmountains, hills, and plains, interspersed

with noble rivers and lovely lakes. . . .Graceful shrubs and delicate flowersgreeted the eye at every turn. . . .

“After the earth . . . had been calledinto existence, man, the crowning workof the Creator, and the one for whom thebeautiful earth had been fitted up, wasbrought upon the stage of action. To himwas given dominion over all that his eye

could behold; for ‘God said, Let us makeman in our image, after our likeness.’. . .Here is clearly set forth the origin ofthe human race. . . . God created manin His own image. Here is no mystery”

(Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 44, 45).

Room Decorations As you plan your room decorations for

the quarter, remember that a large andelaborate background with accompanyingprops provides far too much visual stim-ulation for infants and toddlers. A few, large, well-chosen decorations are bettersuited for this age than is an elaborate set.

Room decorations are designed tobe used for an entire quarter. An out-door theme with trees, planters with

flowers, rainbows or bright strips ofribbons hanging from the ceiling, birds, stuffed animals, sun, something to rep-resent water (small container, plexiglassover blue paper or blue cloth with rocksaround it) will be appropriate for thelesson this month and for the next twomonths when the children learn aboutNoah and Isaac. An extra-large felt Jesus

mounted on foam board could be used.Make a wall tree using brown cloth,

burlap, or shopping bags pieced to-gether for the small trunk. Cut out greenshapes for leaves that can be taped on.

Artificial insects or birds can be placed inthe tree.

For Creation, glow-in-the-dark starscan be stuck to the ceiling, strings ofsmall white lights that can be turned onor shiny star shapes may be hung fromthe ceiling.

Bulletin boards can be decoratedwith traditional felt “Creation circles,” orpictures or cutouts of seasons. Anotheroption is to make a “God Made Flowersand God Made Me” board with coloredpaper cut into flowers and stems with

grass on the bottom. The child’s pictureor cutout silhouette can be glued in thecenter of each flower, or their namewritten in.

Obtain a picture of each child in your class to use as an option in theMake and Take activity for Week 4. Askparents to bring in a picture or take apicture of each child early in the month.

    LESSON 1

    16 www.gracelink.net/beginner

Busy parents often arrive at churchtired and worn out from the week’sactivities and from getting the familyready for the “day of rest.” Share a wordof encouragement with them sometimeduring Sabbath School (possibly during

Arrival Activities), something that willexpress your care and concern for them. The following statements were preparedby young parents as suggestions, andmay be used at your discretion at any

    time you wish.

Week 1Before kids, I was the perfect parent.

I had every answer to every problem. And then I had children. Suddenly I feltlike a failure on a regular basis. Are youever hard on yourself about your par-enting? God says, “My grace is enough

for you. When you are weak, then mypower is made perfect in you” (2 Cor-inthians 12:9, ICB). The only “perfect”

we’ll see as parents is the perfect ofGod’s power working in us. He lovesour children more than we can compre-hend. God works in their behalf, andHe’s the perfect parent. Ellen White says,“Mothers, remember that in your workthe Creator of the universe will give youhelp” (Child Guidance, p. 172).

Tell about a time God answered your prayers and gave you His powerto be strong.

    Week 2

My nature-loving daughter displayedher affection for insects early in life. Onemorning I was chasing a fly with a fly-swatter, and she asked me to stop. “I’llget it, Mommy,” she said. Very carefullyshe trapped the fly in a bottle, thenproceeded to open the back door andrelease the fly. When I asked her why shedid that, she answered, “This is the only

life the fly has, Mommy. I want him todie happy!” Never underestimate theunderstanding of your children! Take

your children out in nature, and pointthem to Jesus there. “The works of theLord are great. . . . He has made Hiswonderful works to be remembered”(Psalm 111:2-4, NKJV).

Talk about a time you learnedsomething from your child.

    Week 3Our firstborn watched everything.

He carefully observed other children andadults walking, but wasn’t about to try ithimself until he was sure he knew whatto do. We were amazed as we saw himtoddle off across the room one day with-out  falling. Our second child was quitedifferent. She would just take off acrossthe room toward her goal. It didn’t mat-ter how many times she fell before shegot there—she just wanted to go. One

was interested in the process; the otherwas interested in the goal. When yourchild doesn’t do what other childrenthat age are doing, don’t worry! Godhas given each one their own way oflooking at the world.

Share concerns you’ve had when your child did something differentlythan another child of similar age. Whathelped you to know that it was OK forthem to grow in God’s timing?

    Week 4

We were trying to catch butterflieswith our little net. We had caught acouple tiny ones and put them in a jar.

We got excited when a big, pretty one flew by. I chased after it, but my littleone called out, “Mommy, no. Don’tcatch that one. It’s too big.” I figuredout that my child didn’t want to catch itbecause it was too birdlike. It made him

feel sad to think that we would catch it

in a bottle and that it would die. Thinkabout it. Ellen White says, “The chil-dren need to be given lessons that willnurture in them courage to resist evil”

    (Child Guidance, p. 49).

What lessons have you taught yourchildren from nature? How can you usenature more?

    Peek-a-boo,Let’s see who

Finds a (name of object)God made for you. (Child picks

up the object.)(Name) did! (Hug child.)

    D. Zoo Corner Provide an assortment of animal

block sets (zoo, farm, etc.) to build azoo and play with the animals thatGod made. Adults say: “See the (nameof animal) that God made. What doesthe (name of animal) say?”

    E. Rock-a-Bye Baby Provide dolls and blankets. The

children hold and rock their babies.Encourage them to sing to their babies.

    F. Rocking Chairs For children who may be too shy or

sleepy to join in the activities, parentscan sit and rock their child.

    G. Animal Puzzles Provide an assortment of ready-

made puzzles. Or cut pictures ofanimals from magazines, mount on

foam core or cardboard, and laminate. Then cut the pictures in half and placethem on a table or quilt. Older toddlerswill enjoy matching the two halves ofthe pictures.

Plan simple play activities on thecarpet, blanket, sheet, or quilt inside

the semicircle for the children whoarrive early. The children participatein these activities under the super-vision of an adult until the programbegins. The child’s play should be withmaterials that relate to the program, which is based on the monthly Biblestory.

Choose from the following sug-gested activities for this month. Besure to include something for thespan of children’s ages.

    A. Book Basket Provide a basket of sturdy board

    books about Creation, animals, colors,etc.

    B. Animal Corner Provide toy stuffed animals (some

that make noises) and soft-sculpturedobjects for children to hold.

    C. Peek-a-booThis basket includes hand towels

and play objects (a block, ball, rattle, orstuffed animal). Parents hide an objectunder the towel. The children will enjoyplaying peek-a-boo to find somethingthat God made, as the parent says thisrhyme:

God Made My World Can you make a picture? Do you want to show your pictures to somebody? Long ago

    God made something special.

    Memory Verse“Everything [God]. . . made . . .was . . . good”

    (Genesis 1:31,ICB).

    The Message

    God madepretty thingsbecause Heloves us.

God made our wonderful world.First, God made light. (Let child switchlights or flashlight on/off.) God called thelight “day.” He made day and night.

The next day God made the beauti- ful blue sky with clouds and wind. Can

you blow like the wind? The third day God made the dirt.God made soft, green grass. God madepretty flowers. Can you point to the

     flowers? Godmade talltrees. Can

you reachup like a talltree? Now bea bush.

    “Thisearth is very

nice!” Godsaid. He washappy. (Gooutside andname things Godmade to grow.)

On the fourth day God madethe bright sun. We see the sun in thedaytime. God made the round moon(hold hands in a circular shape). He alsomade the twinkling stars that we see atnight (open and close fists so fingers can

“twinkle”). God put stars in the sky.(Make your hands “twinkle uphigh.”)

The next day God filled the waterswith fish. (Put palms together and wigglehands.) Then God filled the air with flyingbirds of all colors (flap arms as if flying).

He gave the birds pretty voices to singhappy songs (imitate a birdsong). Godsaw everything He made. God said, “Thisis good.”

On the sixth day God made all theanimals. He made tall giraffes and furry

caterpillars (walk finger across child’sarm). God made horses (make gallopingsounds) and barking puppies (bark).

God saw the animals He made. AndGod said, “This isgood.”

And thenGod made themost specialcreation. Hemade people.

God took somemud and made a

man. The man hadstrong legs (patchild’s legs) andsmiling lips (smile

at child). God blewinto the man’s nose

(blow out). The man opened his eyes (blinkeyes open). He was alive! God called theman Adam.

Then God made a woman. He madeEve to be Adam’s wife and friend.

On the seventh day God looked

at everything he had made. It was verygood. So God rested from His work.“This is a special day,” He said. “Thisis a day of rest.”

And so God made the Sabbath,a special day to spend with us. Godmade our world because He loves us.
