WAVELL WHIRLAWAYS

REMEMBER WHEN - BACK IN TIME

On Wednesday 26th October Wavell Whirlaways celebrated a bygone era and not just in Square Dancing. For just over a month we were told to gather memorabilia to bring on the night. We spent a couple of hours decorating the Hall with all kinds of posters from the fifties, sixties and onwards. It was then time to add the photos, toys, crockery, glassware and clothing to the many tables down one side of the hall. It was hard to know where to look first. Can I see myself in some old photos? Who is that in wedding attire? Carmel and George bought back a lot of memories from over forty years ago by dressing in the competi-tion uniform. Many old uniforms adorned the wall and also one worn by a Committee member of EXPOVENTION 88.

We had two Bathing Beauties from a time past and one shady looking character in a black and white striped outfit he must have blended in well because we did not see any police around. Some of the oldest pieces of pottery and glassware were dated at well over 100 years old.

Sid’s calling as always was right up there with a lot of old numbers including Oh Johnny, Summer Sounds and more. June Lambert

Hi there

Here's a bit which might be extra pertinent so close to all the Christmas Parties coming up. I have attached a flyer which is used at our own and another venue in Hervey Bay. We all look forward to attending fun weekends, meeting up with friends and dancing our feet off. For some, those large gatherings pose a danger however. Anyone with asthma or peo-ple with certain allergies can have nasty a reaction to the perfumery on display, rang-ing from choking coughing fits to an inability to breathe at all. Ladies like to show off their smelly stuff, but it must remembered that when 20+ per-fumes move into a hall it's like the factory of Dior, Elizabeth Arden, Yves St Laurent, Chanel, Avon etc. etc. all combined. Can we be a little more considerate and lighten the atmos-phere? With the festive season upon us it might be worth remembering, less is best. Anyone ever wonder why we douse ourselves? Google it. Food for thought isn't it? Thanks

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES

As we have our learner's class on a separate night to Club dancing, we invited ALL Club dancers to meet the new dancers and have a social night with supper on the learner's night as a way of making them feel welcome and get-ting to know them. This is something we have not done before. We are looking forward to having Nev & Bev McLachlan as Guest Caller & Cuer 29/30th October. Come and join us for an excellent weekend of mixed dancing. Our Charity Bowl Night in November will be different this year with a "Pot Luck Dinner" with an Oriental Flavour before dancing. Members have the option of setting the mood by dressing up if they wish. Don't forget our Free District Christmas Dance in Bundaberg 19th Novem-ber. All dancers are welcome. SUNCOASTERS SQUARE DANCE CLUB

Gary called for two squares of Suncoasters’ dancers at a Buderim Bush Dance at Buderim War Memorial Hall on 23rd September and this was very warmly appreciat-ed by the audience many of whom got up on the floor and joined in the fun. The next big event was the very popular ‘Shindig on the Mountain’ at Mothar Mountain at Gympie which Gary runs every October and we all enjoy a great time. Kay Walker has been warmly welcomed by our dancers every second Sunday in the absence of Nev and Bev and calls Round Dancing and Plus for us. Thank you Kay. We look forward to welcoming Nev and Bev back home very shortly. Our long time member and Past President, June McCarthy is currently enjoying a lovely trip to Europe which we look forward to hearing about on her return. We are now looking forward to a Halloween Dance at Suncoasters on Saturday, 29 October and then the end of the year will be almost upon us and we will welcome in the New Year with a great dance put on by Gary on New Years’ Eve. HERVEY BAY SQUARE DANCE CLUB

Hervey Bay had no special caller this month but helped Maryborough enjoy the calling of Glenn Wilson and friends. A great night was had by all - great calling, supper, fruit tray raffle (won by a H/B dancer) and, to cap it off, yours truly won one of the lucky door prizes. Yahoo!! We did celebrate September and October birthdays at a café at Point Vernon; Yummy food and a cup cake for everyone. Our learners are progressing well and really enjoying the experience. They can't wait to be qualified square dancers and able to travel with us to the weekend events and conventions.

Only four of us went to Gary's Shindig this year but it was refreshing to see eight squares on the floor for most of the sessions. Camping in the hall at Mothar Mountain was a great experience. What fun we had. Why don't you try it one year? Our next caller will be Andrew Reid on 5th November. The theme is "Melbourne Cup" with a prize for the best hat or fascinator. Come on, wear something crazy and win a prize. Plus is in the afternoon at 2pm and Mainstream at 7pm.

On the 10th December we will be hosting Glenn Wilson for our Christmas Dance. The hall will be decorated with colored lights etc so we are all looking forward to a festive afternoon at 2pm and night session at 7pm. Come join us if you can.
