From 10 - 31 Kerch the 1st J.larines were opposed by elements of the 359th !tli'&iJnent
(deployed from BT 96CIJ43 to GT 002050) and the 36oth Regiment (deployed ti'OIB CT
002050 to CT 098062) of the 12oth Division. The 12oth -Division is 8n or~c part
of the 40th JCF Army, at present under the operational control of the 46tttf-ti9F
Army, (deployed fr0111 BT 960043 to CT 110190). The two enerny regiments were '.U..posed
with two battalions on line and one in reserve. · ·
(2) The enemy employed a perimeter-type defense on mutually supporttng key
terrain features, deploying his forces in great depth. Security was maintdned
by establishing outposts, listening posts, and active patrolling.
(3) Enemy activity during this period was a cont~~uation or an act~Ye
defense characterized by an organization of present defenses in conjurtctiQU with
a strong logisticaJ. effort, establishment of a tight connter-reconnaissal)d8' ac.reen_.
a gradual forward extension of fortifications to increase military pressure. and
improve observation into friendly areas, and aggressive attacks in platoon,, com
pany and battalion strengt~ against friendly outpost and Main Line of ResiSt.&Joe
positions.
(4) Enemy mortar and artillery fire during this period was heavy. A
total of 7,677 rounds of mixed mortar and artillery fell in the.lst Harines sector
during this period for an average of 349 rounds P"r day. The average daily incom
ing mortar and artillery fire during a correspond.in·; period on line (10 Jaaua.ry to
25 January) was 2l2 rolmds per day. Tne rr~jority of these ro~~ds fell in·the right
battalion sector (CT 015034 to CT 043050), concentrated on friendly positiQns COP
124, GOP l22A, GOP 56A, COP 52, Hill 53, Hill 68, Hill 60, and Hill 52A. Uncon
firmed reports indicate possible enemy employment of 152mm Gun/Howitzer and 160mm
mortars against friendly ELR and CO? positions •

b. Friendly Situation
(1) As the period opened, tl'le J.st Marines continued to occupy and :iaprove the Division Reserve Area. An intensive training schedule was conducted, .. d.signed to improve Amphibious a~d gro~~d offensive combat potential. The regiment-oontL~Ued to prepare for occupying and defending blocking positions on Line WYOMING and Line KANSAS on order and for counterattacking on order. Improvement of Line KANSAS in the assigned sector was also continued. Preparation was made for counterattack on I Corps order, as counterattack force in the 2nd Army Division Sector or··other Di~~sion Sectors of I Corps.

(2) On 10 March, the 1st Harines relieved the 7th Marines in the ·.otmter MLR regimental sector of the Division sector, of Line JA!o!ESTOWN. At 0900I, ·the 1st Harines assumed responsibility of the assigned sector. In direct suppOrt of the 1st ioiarines were: 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines, reinforced by two (2) Bt.rr of 105nm Howitzers, 2nd Battalion, lith Marines; Company Dog, 1st Tank Battalion and Compa_T!y Baker.P 1st 1-!otor Transport Battalion. Cornpa!'.y Baker., lst Enginee~ ·Battalion was in general support of the 1st Marines sector. The Command Group is camposect of the Regimental Conmsnder, the Staff, Liaison pB-..rt.ies and those E!_-·_ements of Headqua_rters a.nd Service Company !"eqni ~
to enable the Commander to exercise tactical and administrative control of the Regiment a~d attached units. ThoSe ~ements are usually found in the Regimental Cormna11d Post.

MEDICAL SUMMARY

During the month o~ March, the Medical Department o~ the First Marines supported the action or the two battalions oco~ ying line JAME6TvwN rrom 10 March to 31 March inclusive. .
PecUliarities or the terrain in the Regiment's sector or .. responsibility in some cases produced prob1sme in the evacuatl9n or casualties and in non-emergent medical treatment. It was:; , necessary to maintain a forward aid bunker manned by a Battalion Surgeon and five corpsmen on a twenty-tour hour basis at a · position on the reverse elope or the hill mass on Which the MLR was plQced because o~ the hazard: o~ enemy ~ire on the evacuation route during daylight hours. Casualties reqUiring evacuation during the daylight hours were evacuated by helicopter. Cae~t1ee or lees urgent nature were held until nightfall, and evacuate!~· na ambUlance jeep. ·•
!he advent or the spring thaw and heavy rainfall reduced tra'f~icabilitY or many roads along the routes or evacuation 'for periods not in exceee.of twelve hours. Under these circumstances the use of air evacuation was increased. Armored Pereonnel Carriere were used ~requently to eTacuate oaeualtiee irom positions 'forward of the JILR as well as rrom Company level to the rear, both because or the protection they a'ftorded casua1ties, and because or their abi~ity to trarrio roads unfavorable to ambulance Jeeps.
The Battalion Surgeon o~ the Third Battalion Drought attention to the clinical picture of irritation of the heel cord in eo.e indivl.duale wearing f1eld ooote. A cumulative total for the Regiment showed seventy-'four outpatients and one evacuee to a medical company durl.ng 1953. None of the outpatients were unable to perform the1r dut1es. Control measures consisted or:

ROUTINE DAY REGD!ENTAL HEADQUARTERS
1. Personnel Section
Normal Day consists of routine correspondence; assignment of personnel
reporting for duty; transfer of personnel; reporting of casualties; maintaining
liaison with Division and subordinate units; supervision of exchange, special
services and po~t office.
2. Intelligence Section
a. During a routine day in reserve, the intelligence section: Maintained a
continuous phone watch; remained abreast ef the situation on the Division front,
prepared for tactical employment in the sector designated; supervised and maintain
ed rear area counterintelligence screening patrols and prisoner stockades; conducted
instruction in combat intelligence; submitted the Daily Intelligence Report to
Division; and continued to collect, record, evaluate, interpret and dissemimate
information and intelligence in preparation for reserve and main line of res
istance employment.
b. During a routine day on line, the intelligence section: Maintained a
continuous phone and radio watch, manned two regimental observation posts, provid
ed for the continuous collection, evaluation, interpretation, and dissemination
of combat intelligence, supervised and maintained rear area counterintelligence
screening patrols,· and submitted to Division a Daily Intelligence Report.
3. Operations Section
a. Preparation and sutmission of such reports as are directed by higher
authority.
b. Preparation and distribution of operations orders, operations plans,
training orders and training memorandums.
c. 3stablish various schools within the regiment and assign quotas to
subordinate units of Division and/or higher echelon schools.
d. Coordination of training areas and ranges within the regimental area.
e. Collect, consolidate, and request from Division, training aids, trainine
films, and film strips.
f. Conduct on the job training of personnel within the section.

4. Logistic Section
a. A routine day for the S-4 section consists of the following:
(1) Verifying th~ status of supply in all classes (I, II, III, IV, and
v).
(2) Coordination of the logistical effort, i. e., motor transport,
engineer, includin,s requests therefore and alloca.tion of such requests.
(3) Supervision of the YBCs attached to the Regiment.
(4) Preparation and submission of such reports as c~.re directed by
higher authority.
(5) Verifying the status of the routes of supoly.
b. A routine day in the Supply Section consists of receiving the
Regimental food shipnent for consumption the following day. Ration state
ments are submitted each day. Food is delivered next day. When received, the
food is broken down to battalions and separate company allocations and is
delivered to the subordinate units. Receipt, storage, and issue of supylies
to subordinate units carried on throughout day. Salvage operations carried
on each day as follows:
c. All unserviceable materials gathered by subordinate units turned in to
Regimental Supply Officer.
d. All unserviceable materials turned in to Salvage Section of the 1st
Servica Battalion.
e. A routine day in the Motor Transport Section consists of 6000 and
1000 mile check ups, minor repairs performed on vehicles, daily trip tickets
issued for runs to various units, and vehicles for support of Regimental
Headquarters.
f. A routine day at the Ordnance Section consists of repa~rlng all
weapons that are in need of repairs, receiving and is.3 :ring arnr:;uni tion,
and issuing V~eapons to lst Harines.
