Dear Friends,

This year with Hanukkah and Christmas overlapping, once again it raises the “December

Dilemma,” i.e. how should one deal with being non-

Christian during a high-time of Christian religious enthusiasm? I know that some parents are very concerned that their children should not be made to feel, in any way, like outsiders in their schools when everyone is preparing to celebrate this important

Christian occasion.

You may be surprised to know but I think this so called “dilemma” is, in the long run, actually a positive. I believe that it is not only good for our children to know that they are different religiously, but it is also good for them as human beings to realize that they need not try be like everyone around them. I strongly believe that outsiders ultimate grow and become stronger on the inside; that it can build character, independence of thought, and the strength to stand up for what one believes in. Such people will not only become deeply respected by others but they will, in time, become the very people capable of making positive change in our world.

The way to respond to this so-called “December Dilemma” is not by lobbying to curtail or minimize Christian observance in the schools by Christians, nor by turning our own Hanukah holiday into a “Jewish Christmas” but, rather, by teaching our children how proud they should be that they belong to a dedicated minority who throughout history have stood up for principles, sacred values, and were always, if need be, prepared to go it alone.

Christians observing their religious holiday doesn’t make me feel the least bit insecure about myself nor about my status as an American. I was raised to respect the religious tradition of others but knowing that there is no need to seek to imitate their ways.

“Be proud of who you are” was the lesson I was taught. “Keep your self-

respect.” Know, without being chauvinistic about it, that it was our own religious heritage that has so greatly contributed to the values that today are universally embraced.

That was the real spirit of the Maccabees. They were religious non-

conformists while so many others around them sought to emulate the Greeks. Christians so admired the Maccabees they put the Books of Maccabees into their Bible (the Apocrypha) although those books are not in our own Hebrew Bible. Early Christians realize that had it not been for the Maccabees, who kept their independence of spirit and their own religious traditions, Christianity would never have come into existence. Be proud and have a very happy Hanukah.

With affection,

Dear Friends,

After the High Holydays are over,

I feel as if I have so many people

to thank. Here is a loud thank

you to all of you. Being the

Cantor, I owe a special debt of

gratitude to our choir. Their

work leading up to the Holydays was exemplary.

I decided to sing a very eclectic selection of music

this year. It featured several modern composers

along with the traditional arrangements that some

of you remember. They put forth their best efforts

and added much beauty to our services. If you

didn’t hear them, it’s OK. I forgot to turn on their

microphones on Rosh Hashanah. One more thing

to put on the High Holyday checklist.

As much as I enjoy the choir, I was left feeling like

something was missing. It goes without saying

that these excellent volunteers, all members of

COS, gave their best effort. What we need,

however, is a coloratura soprano. For you non-

Italian speakers, those are the women who sing the

highest parts with the biggest sound. If you or any

member of your family happens to fit into that

category, please let me know so I can start begging

you or them now for next year. It’s interesting the

way our choir worked out. We had seven men in

the choir this year. It’s the greatest number I can

remember. In the past, we always had one great

soprano who belted it out. Now, through a9rition,

there are no more.

Thanks to all of you who offered kind words about

the choir. Please know that I appreciate it a great

deal. As you know, the choir does add some time

on to an already lengthy service. That is why they

only sing during one portion of the service on

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur day. On Kol

All of the Holidays definitely

consumed the month of October.

I hope you all found the High

Holiday services to be as

inspirational and meaningful as I

did. Although Hurricane

Mathew tried to disrupt the

beginning of the holidays, the amazing weather at

the end really enabled us to enjoy the Sukkah and

all of the decorations our Religious School students

made and put up in the Sukkah.

So now that we have been rejuvenated by all of the

holiday celebrations, it is time to return our focus

to the many things that your Board is working on

this year and for the future of Ohev Shalom. As I

mentioned in my Kol Nidre speech, one of the

more significant items we are working on this year

is the next Strategic Plan for Ohev Shalom. It is

this plan that will shape Ohev Shalom for the next

100 years. Also as I mentioned in my speech and

my previous bulletin article, we have just

completed the first phase of this initiative. This

consisted of the survey which many of you

responded to and the analysis of the resulting data.

The next step is working with our

Transformational Specialist from USCJ, Aimee

Close, and determine the six or so main themes

that have emerged from the survey responses and

other factors directly impacting Ohev Shalom.

Aimee will be here in early November giving your

Board a workshop on this next phase of the

Strategic Planning process. Then focus groups will

be established to concentrate on each of the themes

and come up with various approaches and options

to be considered. This is where you come in, as we

who has somewhere to go on erev Yom Kippur?

Certainly not out to eat.

I’m always fascinated when congregants tell me

that they a9ended services at a different

synagogue in a different city. You might think

that it is not interesting, but I love hearing about

other Cantors and choirs. Please don’t hesitate to

From the Development VP As I am writing this, the 2016-2017 COS Directory

is about to go to press. Thanks to Carolyn Rosen-

blum and the entire commi9ee for the hard work

that went into making our directory a record fund

raising success. You as a congregant can build on

our success by looking first in the directory when

you need to select a product or service and sup-

porting the advertisers. These advertisers play an

important role in the financial stability of COS and

without them we would not be able to maintain

our many programs and stable dues structure.

Please check your personal directory listing for

accuracy. The information there comes from the

COS data base and so any updates should be re-

ported to our office.

Another way you can support COS when shop-

ping online is to go to our website,

www.ohevshalom.org and click on the Amazon

icon on the home page. Every Amazon purchase

you make from this link benefits COS at no added

cost to you!

Work is well underway planning the COS Gala to

be held February 28, 2017. Our honoree this year is

none other than Amy Geboff, our beloved reli-

gious school director for the past 21 years.

We know everyone will want to turn out for this

event to honor Amy and enjoy auction items, great

food, and lively entertainment. We are planning

an evening to help you reminisce about your own

summer camp days, so mark your calendars. If

you would like to help plan our event or in the

gathering of auction items, please contact Nina

Oppenheim or Melody Apter.

RABBI DAVID KAY’S MESSAGE

Haveirim Y’karim –

Dear Friends –

The deadline for this

November/December 2016

Ohev Shalom bulletin fell

before the end of the 2016 World Series, so I can

only say, “Congratulations to the Major League

Baseball team from the Midwestern city beginning

with the le9er ‘C’.” And it also fell before Election

Day, so…well, enough said!

We’ve recently begun the cycle of re-reading the

Torah, and that means each Shabbat at this time of

year brings us the next installment in the saga of

the Matriarchs and Patriarchs. These familiar and

beloved stories are part of our national history as

well as our spiritual history. They tell us as much

about who we are – and who we strive to be – as

they do about what we believe.

One of the foundational concepts in Conservative

Judaism is a literary approach to our sacred text.

That’s really not a new idea, though – the Rabbinic

tradition has been doing it for over 2,000 years.

The Sages of the Talmud and the Midrash

explored the literary nuances in the Torah and the

rest of the Tanakh, unfolding myriad layers of

meaning. And, every day, we are finding new

relevance in those ancient stories and their

interpretations.

For the past six years, Janet Friedman has been

facilitating a monthly Shabbat study group called

“Women of the Tanakh.” Now, the topic is shifting

to “Bible Stories You Thought You Knew,” delving

into those familiar tales and finding the surprises

that are brought forth through the Rabbinic lens –

or just through a more careful reading of the plain

meaning of the text. The next sessions are

November 19 and December 10, right after

services. Just grab some lunch from the Kiddush

and join us in the Youth Lounge.

There’s also an unexpected advantage in a literary

approach to Jewish texts – it also lets you take a

Jewish approach to other literature and popular

culture. By applying some of the same techniques

used by our ancient Sages and modern scholars,

we can view books, films, and more through a

Jewish lens.

Starting Monday evening, November 28, at 7 p.m.

and running for four weeks, we’re going to take

that approach to one of the most beloved movies

of the past century. I’ll be facilitating a class called

“As You Wish: The Torah of The Princess Bride.”

Watch for more information coming soon.

L’shalom,

David Kay

Our Paid- up Membership Brunch was a huge

success. There were over 60 women in a9endance.

Rabbi Kay gave a D’var Torah and the presenter

enlightened us on Ladino music and language. He

also spoke on finding his Jewish routes and his

now understanding of why his Grandma lit

candles in the basement on Friday evenings. The

commi9ee did an outstanding job.

Leagrams have been going out to members, college

students are receiving packages, snacks were

provided for the children during the High Holy

Days and Sisterhood covered Ohev’s Break Fast.

The Holidays are behind us. In

the Hebrew school world we

tend to complain when the

holidays are too early there

isn’t time to teach them, but

this year they were later, and

we had time to teach but we

still complained that it seems the holidays went on

forever! You just can’t win but it is clear that our

students and families did benefit by the timing as

we delved into the meaning and celebrations. A

huge Todah Rabbah to our staff, madrichim,

leaders and parents for supporting all of our

events, services and keeping up with the change in

schedules.

Life at COS beyond the holidays is full and

exciting. November and December brings us the

6th grade Shabbaton, USY Subregional Convention,

Kadima Convention, Family Cooking, Family

Shabbat Experience, Second Grade Family Siyum,

Third through Fifth Grade Jewish Book Month

family program, the USY Shabbaton, International

USY Convention in Dallas, and the teacher retreat.

This is in addition to our regular youth group

programs and Hebrew school.

This is the 3rd year of our High School program

DDD “Dinner, Daber and Dvar.” We have

changed the format a bit to meeting twice a month

rather than every week. The focus is “Ahavah/

Love Wins.” We learn to love each other when we

understand each other. To that end the teens have

been dialoging with residents of Village on the

Green and Teens from other Faith Traditions. It

has been an incredible experience to be part of and

watch unfold. The first interfaith dialog was held

at COS during Sukkot and the first dialog with the

seniors was in September. At both they shared

are looking for members who would like a chance

to help establish our future. The focus group

volunteers will meet several times over the next

few months to openly discuss their assigned

theme and develop several approaches they

would like considered. I, along with the Strategic

Planning Co-chairs, Steven Hornik and Jo Staffin,

will do our best to make sure that these meetings

will be lively, exciting to participate in, and

productive. If you would like to volunteer and

help develop the guide which will drive Ohev

Shalom’s future, please let me know. Email me at

[email protected] and once we have

established the specific themes, I will follow-up

with you so we can determine the best Focus

Group for you.

Just as a reminder, our next semi-annual

Congregational Meeting is on Sunday, November

20. While there are not any critical items that will

be requiring a vote at this particular meeting, it

will be a great opportunity to catch up on

everything that is currently going on at Ohev

Shalom.

As always, if anything should come up where you

find the need to contact me directly, please feel

free to send an email to [email protected] and

I will definitely get back with you as soon as I can.

Shalom,

We want to start off by thanking all who served as

ushers during the High Holy Days and special

thanks to Dean Faracchio who did an amazing job

scheduling the shifts. Very favorable comments

were received from many congregants, including

the clergy.

The Men’s Club has a wonderful year of activities

planned. We know that our membership of the

Men’s Club has very busy work lives and want to

spend as much time as they can with their

families. Accordingly, we will have fewer events

with a greater emphasis on family activities. For

example, The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs

(FJMC) is planning a father/son retreat at Camp

Shalom around the end of March. This is a great

opportunity to get to know your Men’s Club be9er

and to spend a great weekend with your son. (All

ages are welcomed). There will be both religious

and sporting activities planned. Promotional

materials will be distributed once the event date is

finalized. Last year’s retreat was a roaring success.

Another major event is the Man & Youth of the

Year. It is planned as a joint activity again with the

other local Men’s Clubs to be held this year on

11/20/16 at Temple Israel. You should have

received your invitation in the mail and they are

due back by 11/6/16. In your packet, you would

have received the RSVP for the event and a form

to assist you in placing an ad for our honorees;

Howard Kaplan and Lily Brenner. Please join us

on the 20th and consider placing an ad for Howard

and Lily. If you need any further information;

please contact Andy Rosen at [email protected].

We will hold a “Recess” (a casual gathering with

other congregants) at Mulligan’s in Altamonte

Springs (Publix shopping center on 434 & Wekiva

Springs Road) on 11/13/16 starting at 5:30 p.m.

Please contact Alan Zelt at [email protected] for

further information (a flyer has been mailed).

As you might suspect, it is time for the Super Bowl

Fund Raiser. The flyers are already out. Please

contact Richard SchwarT if you would like to

participate. The funds received from this activity

are earmarked for Amy Geboff and her Youth

Programs. We have been fortunate in years past to

raise considerable dollars for Amy and our kids. It

is a lot of fun and you might even win some

money. Richard can also answer any questions

you might have and he can be reached at

[email protected].

On Sunday, December 4th we are holding our

second Annual Winter Park Boat Ride. This was a

wonderful event two years ago when we filled

four boats and had dinner at Dexter’s following

the ride. There will be a special menu to order our

meals at Dexter’s. The cost of the ride is only

$12.00 and the dinner with the ride is $38.00 per

person. Come join us for the tour. Flyers have

already been mailed to your homes. For further

information, please contact Alan Zelt at

Well my friends, I am

going to give you a

preview of what to expect

in the line of entertainment

for the remaining months

of 2016 and the first six

months of 2017. As always, I ask you to mark

your calendars and when you receive your flyers

in the mail to put them on your refrigerators so

you donʹt forget. Also, for the record, all our

functions are on Sunday starting at 2 p.m. SHARP

and I want to point out that our day in January

falls on New Year’s Day which means the building

will be closed, so our first meeting of the new year

has been moved to January 7th. Of course I wish

everyone A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY NEW

YEAR. Now here comes the results of my hard

work finding all these fabulous entertainers for

your pleasure and enjoyment. Starting with

Sunday, November 6th, we had a three piece

combo that will keep you jumping with joy called

THE EASTSIDE GROUP. On December 4th, we

have an entirely different type of entertainment

featuring MR.& MRS. MIGUEL ABREAU and his

ROMANTIC MANDOLIN. They will play music

from all over the world. This is one show you

really can’t afford to miss. The first show of 2017

and back by popular request, we have engaged the

Faith & Jazz 19 piece band that packed the house

the last time they were here. AGAIN, PLEASE

NOTE THE DATE CHANGE TO JANUARY 7th,

2017. Now we swing into the 4th of February

where we have MARK SHAMI, who will spend an

hour and fifteen minutes in A MIND BOGGLING

Musical that will keep you from believing what

you see and hear. Please donʹt miss this, on March

4th we are inviting the entire community to come

to the party featuring two women DESIREE &

ALINDA, known as THE PARTY GIRLS, who will

create a real related party atmosphere where the

audience gets into the act. Come on out for a real

fun afternoon.

On April 1st (not an April fool’s joke) we have

Oklahoma coming to the Senior group that we will

enjoy. The May 6th program is a surprise and I am

not telling anyone. I ask that you trust my

judgment on this show and I promise you will not

believe it when you see it. All I can say is there will

be two people performing.

And of course as the saying goes ʺSAVE THE

BEST FOR LAST ʺ and so we have engaged Allen

Vachie, professional clarinetist together with three

other professional musicians plus a Vocalist to

keep us happy. Let me point out THAT I AM

STILL LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO REPLACE

ME AS PRESIDENT AND I PROMISE TO HELP

THE RIGHT PERSON. Remember all our

functions have refreshments and the price is

always the same.

Questions feel free to call me at 407-767-6763.

Regards, Berny

Once again, we will be showing the NFL Playoff

game on Sunday, January 22nd. This will be aired

by CBS at 3:05 p.m. and we will be showing it in

the Temple on the 92nd street Y screen. It will be the

AFC Championship game to determine which

team will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. Of

course there will be pizza and beer for the

showing.

Each year, we usually go to a spring training

baseball game. This year we are trying something

different. We are going to a Solar Bears game on

Sunday January 29, 2017. If there is enough

interest, we will reserve a suite. This does not

interfere with the NFL playoff games since they

are the week before and the game time is 1:30

which will not interfere with Hebrew school. If

interested, please email Alan Zelt at

tickets you would need. The exact price ($30-$40)

will be set once we get a head count (the price will

depend on the number of a9endees).

The last event planned for early next year will be

held on February 5 which is our World Wide

Wrap/Super Bowl Brunch. This year’s WWW is a

tribute to Jay Stanek; Jay was a founder of the COS

volunteer to talk about Jay’s contributions to COS

their experiences and did a values auction to

trigger discussion on what is important to them

personally and shed light on who they are as

individuals. Our hope is that we come to realize

that we have more in common than differences,

that we can undo stereotypes about different

populations and come together for the be9erment

of our community. Gabe Grossman and I have

been staffing the program. The original plan was

to bring in teachers for the class sessions but what

we are seeing is that we are developing a group

connected by a shared goal and growing together

in our endeavor.

Eric and I are very much looking forward to the

Ahavat Yisrael Trip to Israel June 12-22, 2017. Our

goal is to bring as many people together who want

to experience Israel as an Ohev community. We

are calling it a Family Trip as we want to include

everyone. The one comment we have been

hearing from people who don’t have children at

home or are empty nesters or can’t bring children

is “I am interested but it is a trip for children,” Our

answer is that it is a trip for everyone. Depending

on the participants age range we can alter the trip

as well as offer different tracks. If the idea to come

crossed your mind but had these concerns, please

contact us! The link to the website with all of the

information about the trip and to register is:

Whether you choose to come on the trip, are

thinking about the trip or just want to learn about

Israel, we are offering “Israel 101” on three

Sundays at our home. November 13: Our Right to

the Land, December 4: How Modern Israel Came

Education (continued from page 7) To Be and on January 8: What Israel Brings to the

World. Please see emails and contact the office

for specific details. We would love for you to

come learn and share our love Israel.

One final sentiment. December brings Chanukah

and this year the first candle is Saturday night

December 24. Some would say how great that it

comes at the same time as Christmas and others

would say when it comes at the same time it

becomes the Jewish Christmas. The same

statement I started this article with is that the

Jewish Holidays never seem to be at the right

time. What is important to remember is that

Chanukah is not the Jewish Christmas. There is

no correlation. Ironically it is the fight against

assimilation and to retain our identity as Jews. If

it took place at another time of year we probably

would not be celebrating it to the extent that we

do. Help your children put into perspective

what the holiday is about and be proud of the

many celebrations we have. If you give gifts,

Dear Rabbi –

Well, it’s that time of year again…but my “December

Dilemma” is a li.le different. I actually kind of like the

lights and music and decorations. What I don’t like is

when well-meaning friends ask me about “the Jewish

view of Jesus” – as if I need to explain what we believe

(or don’t). Help!

--Need a Good Answer

Dear NAGA –

“Well-meaning” is the key word. Not-so-well-

meaning people may use that question to create

an opportunity to proselytize or criticize. But as

long as they’re well-meaning – and especially

when they’re friends – there’s a succinct answer:

there really isn’t any “Jewish view of Jesus.”

Judaism has no more need to respond to the

Christian belief in Jesus than Christianity has to

respond to the Muslim belief in Muhammed.

Christianity emerges out of the crucible of 1st

century CE Judea that also gave rise to Rabbinic

Judaism. Within two centuries, Christianity had

diverged into a separate religion, distinctly

different from the various streams of Judaism.

The distinguishing characteristic of Christianity

was the figure of Jesus – a figure unique to that

group, with no prominence in the rest of the

Jewish world at that time or since.

Especially in countries where Christianity is the

predominant religion – including here in the

United States – this can be understandably

difficult for Christians to process. All of us tend

to understand the world from our own

perspective and experience. Cultural differences

are real, and religion is a significant and

formative element of culture.

Interfaith dialogue all too often begins and ends

with carefully identifying common ground. Dr.

Mary Boys points out that if we are to truly

understand one another, we need to be able to

talk about our differences with the same love and

respect with which we talk about our similarities.

The best conversations are honest about what we

don’t know or understand about one another,

and are open to learning in a non-judgmental

way.
