SINGULAR AND PLURAL NOUNS: ● A singular noun names one person, animal, place, or thing. For example: finger or book.● A plural noun names more than one. For example, fingers or books.

A plural noun can have an /s/ sound like in books or a /z/ sound like in fingers.

Say: I’ll say a noun, if it is a singular clap one time. If it is plural, clap two times. Say each word, then gesture to students to clap: hats, flower, paper, kittens, schools, banana, pants, students, shirt, maps, cookies, dog

TEACH and MODEL

● Work through the Grammar Chart● Use the picture and the poem to present the grammar in

context.● Read through the rules.● Explore the examples.

Words that end in s, ch, x, and sh already have an s sound. If we add s to these nouns, we can’t hear the plural ending, so we make them plural by adding -es.

PRACTICE and PLAY: PACKING FACTORY

● Say: In this game, you work in a packing factory. Your job is toput items in the right boxes. Here are all the things you will needto pack up.

● Let’s review them. Quickly review the items on the -s and -es PictureCards.

● Place the -s and -es printout on the table (or on two boxes).● Say: Here are two boxes. Place the Picture Cards face down in a

stack.● Say: Here are all the items that we need to pack into the boxes. If

we need to add -s to the word to make it plural, we’ll sort it to thisbox. Point to the -s box. If we add -es to make the word plural,we’ll sort it to this box. Point to the -es box card.

Sentence frame: We need to pack _________ (-s, -es). noun

Examples: We need to pack foxes. We need to pack cans.

Ben Franklin's Idea

Ben Franklin's Ideaby ReadWorks

Ben Franklin invented things. He liked to read too. He went to the library a lot.

Franklin had a problem. Some books were on high shelves. They were hard to reach.

Franklin had an idea. He made a tool. He called it the long arm. It was a pole with a claw at one end. The

claw was like a hand. Franklin pulled a cord to open and close the claw. Now he could reach the high

books!

My Three Sisters

My Three Sistersby ReadWorks

My name is Tasha. I have three sisters. We look a lot alike. We all

have brown eyes and brown hair.

I am the youngest. But I am very tall. I am taller than one of my

older sisters. I asked my mom why. She said that it's because Dad

is tall. His parents were both tall too. Mom is shorter. She says I am

tall like Dad.

Mom says that we have her color eyes. They are the same shade

of brown. Dad has blue eyes.

I am still growing. I wonder how tall I am going to be.ReadWorks.org · © 2013 ReadWorks®, Inc. All rights reserved.

Animal SoundsDid you know that whales sing? Their songs move through water. Whale songs move far. They can move over 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles).

Birds sing, too. Bird songs move through air. They do not travel as far.

Cats have 32 muscles in each outer ear. You have 6. Cats move their ears to help them find where a sound is coming from.

Bugs can make sounds. They tap on plant stems. Sound waves form and move through the stem. Other bugs feel the waves with their legs. These messages travel fast.

Caves are dark. How do bats find their way? Bats make sounds. Sounds bounce off walls. They bounce off prey. They move back to the bats. The bats do not need light. They know an object is there. The bat finds food. It avoids walls.
