Eating
Crunch! Jimmy was so famished, and the food tasted so good. Munch!
He poured himself a drink. Fizz! He picked up the cup. Gulp!
The Italian sausage was still hot on his plate. Sizzle! He shoved half of it in his mouth. Gobble! He used his shirt sleeve to wipe the grease off of his face.
Jimmy reached for another drink, but his elbow hit the bowl with the chip dip. It fell to the floor. Splatter!
"Oh, well," Jimmy thought as he looked at the mess he would have to clean. "It's worth it." He took another bite of his sausage.
Just then, Jimmy realized something. "I may have eaten too much." Uugh!

The Knight
The light bulb went off in my head! It needed to be a rainy day.
I looked at the canvas. The knight sat on his horse, his suit of armor glistening in the sun. His lance was held at his side. Its sharp point cautioned all challengers to stay away.
Yet the knight didn't look bold enough. The sunny day in the background was too happy and carefree. The knight needed a thunderstorm.
With a few strokes of grey and black and dark green, I was able to turn the sunshine into a monsoon.
I put the brush down and stood back to look at the knight. He was a masterpiece.

Excerpt from A New World:
In his strange way, I was sure that Captain Hudson liked having me on the crew. I think he enjoyed having another "intellect" aboard the ship who was not one of his officers. He worked with them every day looking over maps, charts, and instruments.
As for the other sailors, it amazed me how many of them spent their whole lives working on this ship but never bothered to learn about navigation, global winds, or any of the other "science" that surrounded them. They simply relied on their hands all day, just as if they were in a warehouse stacking boxes. In a way, they were missing out on the marvel of the open sea.
Captain Hudson was putting me in a tricky spot. I enjoyed being in his good graces, but I didn't want to stick out among the other sailors. Any time there was a complaint, the sailors were quick to grumble about Henry Hudson. He was the boss, but he wasn't a friend.

Excerpt from An American Family Tree:
"The future is bright," my father said. He was always saying that. As usual, I rolled my eyes, but after hearing it so many times, it was hard not to believe it might be true.
I guess that my pa's optimistic attitude has paid off in life. He was the son of a poor textile worker but managed to make a great life for himself. By the time he was thirty, he owned his own business repairing the big spinning and weaving machines in textile mills all across South Carolina.
After I was born, we moved to a small town in Lee County. Pa had earned himself a nice reputation by that point, and it helped get him elected as the mayor of our town.
So maybe the future is bright. I come from a great family, live in a big house, and there's always food on the table. Ma says that my school - the "Eastside School for Negro Girls" - is as good as any school in the state.
I try to be optimistic like my parents, and I am thankful for what they have given me. But there are some things that still bother me.

St. Louis has energy flowing from it. You can just feel it. There are people from all over the country--all over the world--and they are all searching for that better life just beyond the horizon.
Some people, like us, are only making a pit-stop in St. Louis. We will soon be setting foot on the Oregon Trail and will literally walk to the western frontier.
Other folks have come to the city to stay. The port is busy, which makes it easy for the newcomers to find work. There is also a fortune to be made by selling to (or swindling) those who are just "passing through" before they head West.
Even Pa was willing to part with his cash so that we could have a room at an inn while we were in the city.
It's only been a couple of days, but I have come to enjoy St. Louis. At first, I was on my guard as we walked among the crowds and strange faces (I had never before heard so many people speaking different languages). It was easy, though, to be taken in by the excitement and it kind of made me want to become a part of it all.
In any case, I didn't welcome the news that we will be leaving in the morning. On board a steamboat, nonetheless.
St. Louis will soon be just another memory, just as my home is now a memory. I'm sure that as the weeks and months go by there will be many more fine places that we leave behind on route to our destination.
