A STUDY ON THE MODE OF MAKING A COUNTRYSIDE SCENERY
UNDER THE CONCEPT OF 'KYORAKU' BY SADANOBU MATSUDAIRA
Shunsuke FUJII, Tomoko KASAHARA and Usio SAITO
Sadanobu Matsudaira who was the feudal lord of Shirakawa excavated a pond to irrigate. ‘Nanko’ which
is the name of the pond is famous for the concept ‘kyoraku’ which means ‘recreated together without the
ditinction of the social stratum’. Sadanobu and his closest associates likened ‘Nanko’area to a garden and
selected 17 scenic spots and gave them poetical names to emphasize the imaze of the landscape. It is
seemed that ‘Nanko’ was open to every social stratum but recreation by Sadanobu’s mode was not
disseminated among peasantry. But in soite of ‘Nanko’ open to every social stratum,it is seemed the
recreation under Sadanobu’s mode was not disseminated among peasantry at least.
