In 2015, the DuPont company restructured its different business units as part
of a new global strategy. The Performance Chemical division was transferred
to The Chemours Company, the current owner of the Viton™ brand.
Viton™ fluoroelastomers were introduced in 1957 to meet the needs of the
aerospace industry that required a high-performance seal elastomer. Since
then, the use of Viton™ fluoroelastomers has expanded to many other
industries, especially in the automotive, chemical, oil and energy sectors. With
over a century of proven performance, Viton™ fluoroelastomers have gained
a reputation for outstanding performance in high temperature and extremely
corrosive environments.
Products based on Viton™ provide an exceptional balance of physical
properties, with excellent performance at extreme temperatures.
High temperature. Compared to most other elastomers, Viton™ is better able
to withstand high temperature, while simultaneously retaining its mechanical
properties. Its resistance to oils and chemicals is also essentially unaffected
by high temperatures. Viton™ high temperature service limits are considered
to be:
▪ 10.000 hours at 204°C (400 °F).
▪ 3.000 hours at 232°C (450 °F).
▪ 1.000 hours at 260°C (500 °F).
▪ 240 hours at 288°C (550 °F).
▪ 48 hours at 315°C (600 °F).
Low temperature. Viton™ low temperature performance depends on the
type, with serviceability as low as –31°C in dynamic applications and –45°C in
static applications using Viton™ GLT-S.
Introduction
5
▪ Resistance to degradation by a greater variety of fluids and chemicals
compared to any other non-fluorinated elastomer. Excellent resistance to
oils, fuels, lubricants, and most mineral acids.
▪ Extremely low permeability to a broad range of substances, including
particularly its resistance to oxygenated oxygenated hydrocarbons.
▪ Resistance to aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons that dissolve other rubbers.
▪ Exceptionally good resistance to compression set, even at high
temperatures.
▪ Exceptionally good resistance to atmospheric oxidation, ozone and UVA
rays. Excellent response to fungus and mould
▪ Good electrical properties in low voltage, low frequency applications.
▪ Fire resistant. Inherently more flame resistant than other, non-fluorinated
hydrocarbon elastomers.
▪ The standard types or families of Viton™ are designated as A, B, or F based
on their resistance to fluids and chemicals The differences in resistance to
fluids (mineral acids or aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons) are the result
of different levels of fluorine content in the polymer.
Introduction
6
The higher the fluorine content, the better the resistance to fluids (lower volume
swell). This can be seen in the following table (see volume change in Methanol
at 23°C). However, as the fluorine content increases, the low temperature
flexibility of the polymer decreases. So when it comes to select the type of
Viton™, a compromise has to be made between fluid resistance and low
temperature flexibility

For those applications that require the best performance in both fluid resistance
and low temperature flexibility, a number of specialty types of Viton™ have
been developed that contain a co-polymerized fluorinated vinyl ether monomer.
Polymers that contain this monomer exhibit significantly improved low
temperature flexibility, compared to standard types of Viton™ (A, B & F).

Viton™ GLT-S provides the same excellent resistance to heat and fluids
as Viton™ A. Viton™ GFLT-S, as with Viton™ GLT-S, exhibits significantly
improved low temperature flex characteristics compared to standard types of
Viton™ In addition, Viton™ GFLT-S provides the same superior resistance to
fluids as Viton™ F.
The ETP types of Viton™ exhibit the same resistance as A, B, and F types of
Viton™. However, unlike conventional fluoroelastomers, ETP types of Viton™
also provide excellent resistance to low molecular weight esters, aldehydes
and ketones. In addition, these unique polymers are inherently resistant to
attack by base and, thus, provide excellent resistance to volume swell and
property loss in highly caustic solutions and amines.

of elastic properties combined with good mechanical properties. Viton™ B is
specifically recommended by the FSA (US Fluid Sealing Association) to resist
SO2 (sulphur dioxide) atmospheres in thermal power stations.
Viton™ B offers superior resistance to both diluted and concentrated
aggressive acids. Our exclusive TH-6070-B* compound made of Viton™ B is
also resistant to various mineral acids such as:
▪ Sulphuric acid.
▪ Nitric acid.
▪ Hydrochloric acid.
▪ TH-6070-B* is one of the few compounds made with VITON™ B that
meet Chemours™ rigorous engineering specifications for use in their own
production plants.

The Viton™ F family was designed for use with oxygenated fuels, modern
lubricants and blended aggressive chemical agents. Given that new chemicals
and fuels are being developed, Chemours is leading new developments in the
Viton™ F family of sealing products.
Viton™ F offers superior fluid resistance and very low permeation in very
aggressive environments.
Viton™ F offers excellent resistance to fluids that Viton™ A and B types cannot
adequately resist. Viton™ F are resistant to oxygenated fuels containing
(MeOH, EtOH, MTBE), engine lubricants (SE-SF and SG-SH grades), aromatic
hydrocarbon process fluids, chemicals and concentrated mineral acids.
▪ TH-1210-FBC: Viton™ F (with a Bisphenol cure). Offers the best fluid
resistance at a very affordable price.
▪ TH-7070-FGC: Viton™ GF peroxide curable offers good resistance to
aqueous fluids: Water, Steam, and Mineral Acids. (S04H2, N03H, ClH, etc.).
▪ TH501-GFLC: Viton™ GFLT Peroxide Curable offers exceptional chemical
resistance and maintains flexibility in low temperature applications -40°C.
VITONTM F
12
Viton™ Extreme offers more universal chemical resistance than any other
grade of Viton™ or PTFE elastomers. In addition, Viton™ Extreme offers
similar base resistance to VTR 7430 (Viton™ Base Resistant).
Viton™ Extreme was originally developed to resist H2S found in the
environments surrounding the oil prospecting fields. However, it has become
widely used in the Chemical Processes, Oil Refining, and in the Semiconductor
and Chemical Transportation industry.
The various fuels of today that contain oxygenated additives such as MTBE,
TAME, ETBE as well as alcohols cause serious sealing problems that Viton™
Extreme can solve without having to use other costly perfluoroelastomers
(Kalrez).
Thanks to their superior performance and cost-effectiveness, seals made from
Viton™ Extreme are an excellent choice for such industries as:
▪ Analytical and process instruments
▪ Chemical industry processes
– Agricultural chemicals and fertilizers
– Pharmaceutical industry
– Polymer production
– Inorganic chemicals
– Organic chemicals
▪ Chemical transport
▪ Oil and Gas exploration
▪ Paint and Coating operations

base chemicals such as primary and secondary amines, and strong caustics,
such as potassium, sodium, and ammonium hydroxide.
Viton™ for Base Resistance is recommended for moulded and calendered
products that are exposed to high pH fluids.
Viton™ for Base Resistance resists a broad range of chemicals, such as:
▪ Steam/Hot Water
▪ Bases
▪ H2S liquid and gas
▪ Pulp and Paper Liquors
▪ Insecticides, Herbicides
▪ Ozone
▪ Oils and Lubricants
▪ Oxidizing agents
▪ Amine corrosion inhibitors
