The purpose of Production Camp is to teach the students all aspects of theater in a hands on learning environment. What a better classroom experience than to learn and then practice what you learned in front of a live audience!

Intro to Theater:

What is Musical Theater?

Musical Theater is a performance that tells a story with songs, dances and spoken dialogue. The story can be a happy one, a scary one, a sad one or a funny one. The story is told by singing songs, dancing and reciting memorized lined.

What is a Theater?

A theater is the place where the Musical or show is performed. A theater has a stage, a house and an offstage area.

Another building or a room can be turned into a theater. I know someone who turned their garage into a theater. MLT is a house and sometimes schools turn their cafeteria into a theater. I just saw a show in a yard with trees and it was turned into a theater!

The Stage is where you perform the show. Some stages are big some are small. Some are raised and some are flat. (Discuss our stage)

The people who see the show are the audience. They sit in chairs. The area they sit in is called the house.

When an actor leaves the stage he or she is considered “offstage.” The audience should NOT be able to see the actor offstage.

Offstage is often called backstage. Actors wait backstage before entering the stage.

The room where the actors get ready to perform the show is called the green room or the dressing room. The clothes the actors wear on stage are called costumes and a costume designer creates the costumes.

If you want to be in a play or have a particular part you will need to audition. An audition is where you sing, dance and read lines for the directors so they can see your level of talent. Think of it as a mini performance.

If the directors are considering you for a specific part they will give you a call back. During callbacks you will learn a song, read some lines and perform again for the directors. They do this so they can see more of your abilities.

After auditions and callbacks the directors cast the show. The cast is all the characters that will be performing in the show. Then you are on to rehearsals.

What are Rehearsals?

The word rehearsing means you are practicing to perform your show. During rehearsals we may sing, act or dance.

Warm ups are what we do before rehearsing. Warm ups get our bodies ready to rehearse. We may stretch our bodies before dance and our vocal chords before singing.

Sometimes we learn the music first. The person who teaches the music is called the musical director.

After we know the songs we learn how to dance to them. The dances are taught by the choreographer.

Next we practice our lines and are told where to stand on the stage. This is called blocking and lines and blocking are taught by the director. The director uses special words to tell us where to stand on the stage.

UPSTAGE is away from the audience…way way up here.

DOWNSTAGE is close to the audience way way down here

STAGE RIGHT is to the right of the actor facing the audience

STAGE LEFT is to the left of the actor, facing the audience.

Once everything I learned then we rehearse with costumes. This is called the dress rehearsal.

Then we add in lights and microphones and special sounds called sound effects. This is called tech week.

The person who runs the stage is called the stage manager. This person has people who help them called the crew. The crew move the set pieces, which are the big pieces that look like a house or a building or they could be pieces of furniture. Sometimes the back ground pieces are called flats and sometimes they are attached to a rolling platform called a wagon. The crew also opens and closes the curtains and sometimes moves a traveler or will operate a smoke machine or fog machine. The crew are very important to a performance.

Rules of the Theater:

1. Be respectful of others at ALL times.2. Practice makes permanent so practice it right!3. Always be on time for rehearsals. Call time is another term and means when

you are to arrive. It is always before the audience comes so you have time to check your mic, get in your costume and do your make up.

4. Always bring your script to every rehearsal5. Always remember everyone’s part is important. And why? Without puppies

Cruella has nothing to steal. Without Cruella there is no crime.6. If you can see the audience they can see you!7. Before a show say break a leg instead of good luck!8. Always be quiet backstage! We say Noises off!9. Remember to thank your directors and parents and everyone who made the

show possible, especially your crew! Also thank your fellow cast members and compliment them on they’re performance.

10. Be attentive and know where the show is so you will make your entrance on time!

11. Never play with the props on the prop table and never move a prop you see sitting somewhere. This is usually pre-set, which means an actor put it there on purpose so they can get to it quickly.

12. And most important of all….HAVE FUN!

GAME: DIRECTOR MAY I ?

TA gives stage Directions so Students will know how to move on the stage.

Production Camp follows a rigorous daily schedule learning music, choreography and acting in a rehearsal environment. All aspects of theatrical training are implemented in each rehearsal.
