16:27

Romans 8:12-13We don’t have to live according to the flesh.

Romans 8:12-13We will have an experience of death if we live in

relation to it.Romans 7:9, 11

Romans 8:12-13Every believer knows the experience of feeling

cut off from God and our inner self being subdued.

Romans 8:12-13The joy and the peace we had experienced is

gone.

Romans 8:12-13When the promptings of the body are not

followed, life changes.

Romans 8:12-13We can again enjoy the eternal life that has been given to us when we live by the Spirit.

Romans 8:14-39Spiritual victory over suffering.

Romans 8:14-39Remember?

We can view suffering differently!Romans 5:4

Romans 8:14 – Living Like AdultsThe person who lives with their mind set on the things of the Spirit is the person who is “led by

the Spirit of God”.

Romans 8:14 – Living Like AdultsBeing led by the Spirit is not a reference to a

feeling or inner direction.

Romans 8:14 – Living Like AdultsBeing led by the Spirit is a person who is living

what God has revealed (8:4).

Galatians 4:1-7 – Living Like AdultsThe issue here is a minor child (not of legal age)

vs. an adult child, a son, (one no longer under a

tutor).

Adult children vs. Minor children

Romans 8:14• Son (8:14)• Heir (8:14, 17)• Spirit’s cry, “Abba”

(8:15)• Adoption (8:15)

Galatians 4:1-7• Son (4:4, 6)• Heir (4:1, 7)• Spirit’s cry, “Abba” (4:6)

• Adoption (4:5)

Romans 8:14 – Living Like AdultsWhen we are led by the Spirit, believers are

acting as adult sons, not simply children.

Romans 8:14 – Living Like AdultsWhen we walk according to the Spirit, we are

not like children under that Law, but experiencing freedom.

Romans 8:15 – Living Like AdultsTo be under the Law is to live in bondage and

the fear of the retribution of the Law.

Romans 8:15 – Living Like AdultsWhen we live as spiritual adults, we realize

more and more the close relationship we have with God.

Romans 8:16 – Living Like Adults“bears witness”

“to provide supporting evidence…support by testimony”

Romans 8:16 – Living Like AdultsOur spirit (8:15) and God’s Spirit both testify to

the Father that we are His.

Romans 8:16 – Living Like AdultsThis knowledge gives us strong confidence in

prayer, whether we know what to pray or not!(8:26-27)

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingAll believers are “heirs of God” and headed for

an inheritance that is free of “sin, suffering, corruption, and death”.

(Hodges, p. 224)

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingNotice that there are two heirships:

1) Heirs of God, and2) Co-heirs with Christ…IF…

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingCo-heirship with Christ depends on our suffering

with Him.

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingCo-suffering Co-heirship Co-glorified

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingIn the Scriptures, suffering precedes glory.

1 Peter 1:11; also Mt. 20:22-23

Rom. 8:17 – Living Like Adults in SufferingEnduring in life is critical to our co-heirship with

Jesus.2 Tim. 2:12; Rev. 2-3; esp. 3:21; note Heb. 5:8-9
