    ( Second Revision)NATIONAL FOREWORDThis Indian Standard ( Part 2 ) ( Second Revision ), which is identical with IS0 -2566/2 : 1984 Steel -Conversion of elongation values - Part 2 : Austenitic steels, issued by the International Organizationfor Standardization ( IS0 ), was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 24 November 1989 onthe recommendations of the Mechanical Testing of Metals Sectional Committee ( MTD 3 ) and approvalof the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council.IS 3803 was first published in 1961 and subsequently revised in, 1974. In this second revision,IS 3803 has been brought in line with IS0 2566, and has been issued in two parts identical to the twoparts of ISC 2566. This Part 2 covers conversion of elongation values for austenitic steels whilePart 1 covers Conversion of elongation values for carbon and low alloy steels.The text of IS0 standard has been approved as suitable for publication as Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attentionis particularly drawn to the following :

    a)

    b)cl

    Wherever the words Jlnternational Standard appear, referring to this standard, they should beread as Indian Standard. .Wherever the words *IS0 2566 appear, referring to this standard, they should be read asIS 3803.Comma ( , ) has been used as a decimal marker while in Indian Standards, the current practiceis to use point ( . ) on the base line as the decimal marker.

    0 IntroductionSeveral,different gauge lengths are commonly in use for thedetermination of percentage elongation of steels in tensiletesting. dxed gauge lengths of 50, 80, 100 and 200 mm areused; proportional gauge lengths of k &are also used for flatand round test pieces, where k may be one of a number ofvalues, i.e. 4; 565; .8,16; and 11,3.

    The value 5,656 is adopted as the internationally preferredproportional gauge length.Arising from this choice and the existence of specificationsstipulating minimum percentage elongations on different gaugelengths, a growing need has been evident for an ITernationalStandard which could be used to convert test results intovalues based on the different gauge lengths. This part ofIS0 2566 accordingly includes tables of convers?on factors,tables of actual conversions for some of the most commonlyused gauge lengths and elongation values, and figures whichmay also be used for such conversions. When using these con-versions, however, note should be taken of the limitations ontheir applicability as stated in clause 1.

    While, as indicated, the conversions are considered to bereliable within the stated limitations, because of the various fac-tors influencing the determination of percentage elongations,they shall be used for acceptance purposes only by agreementbetween the customer and supplier.

    In cases of dispute, the elongation shall be determined on thegauge length stated in the relevant specification.

    1 Scope and field of applicationThis part of IS0 2566 specifies a method of converting roomtemperature percentage elongations after fracture obtained onvarious proportional and non-proportional gauge lengths toother gauge lengths.

    The formula (see clause 4) on which conversions are based isconsidered to be reliable when applied to austenitic stainlesssteels within the tensile strength range 450 to 756 N/m& andin the solution treated condition.

    These conversions are not applicable toa) told reduced steels;b) quenched and tempered steels;

    c) non-austenitic steels.Neither should they be used where the gauge length exceeds25& or where the width to thickness ratio of the test pieceexceeds 20.Care should be exercised in the case of strip under 3 mmthickness, as the index in the formula given in clause 4 in-creases with decreasing thickness; the value to be used shallbe the subject of agreement between the customer and thesupplier.

    2 SymbolsIn this part of IS0 2566, the symbols shown in table l are used.

    3 DefinitionsFor the purpose of this part of IS0 2566, the following defini-tions apply:

    3.1 gauge length: Any length of the parallel portion of thetest piece used for measurement of strain.The ten; is hereafter used in this part of IS0 2566 to denote theoriginal gauge length, Lc, marked on the test piece for thedetermination of percentage elongation after fracture, A.

    3 2 proportional gauge length: A gauge length having aspecified relation to the square root of the cross-sectional area,for example 565 6.

    3.3 non-proportional gauge length: A gauge length notspecifically related to the cross-sectional area of the test piece,usually expressed in a given dimension, for example 56 mm.

    4 Basic formulaThe data contained in this part of IS0 2566 are based on a for-mula obtained from a statistical assessment of international testresults, which, in a simplified form, can be expressed as

    A, = 1.25A

    whereA, is the required elongation on gauge length LO;A is the elongation on a gauge length of 5,65&which isthe internationally accepted gauge length;So and Lo are defined in table 1.

    Expressed in terms of 46 the formula becomes

    where A is the elongation on a gauge length of 4fi.Tables 2 to 22 and figures lto 5 have been prepared on thebasis of the above formulae.

    5 Conversion from one proportional gaugelength to another proportional gauge lengthSimple multiplying factors based on the formula are used forsuch conversions, and the relationships between a number ofthe more widely used proportional gauge lengths are given intable 2. Detailed conversions of elongations obtained on 4 &to 565 6 are given in table 6.

    6 Conversion from one non-proportions1gauge length to another non-proportionalgauge length for test pieces of equal cross-sectional areaThe conversion of elongation values of different fixed gaugelengths on test pieces of equal cross-sectional area are alsomade by simple factors. Conversion factors for gauge lengthsof 50, 69, 109 and 2CKlmm are given in table 3.

    7 Conversion from a proportional gaugelength to a non-proportional gauge lengthThe conversion factors are variable according to the.cross-sectional area of the non-proportional test piece. Table 4 givesthe multiplying factors for conversion from elongation on5,65&to the equivalent on fixed gauge lengths of 50,60, iO0and 209 mm for a range of cross-sectional areas. For conver-sions in the reverse direction, i.e. elongation on a fixed gaugelength to the equivalent of 5.65 &, the reciprocal of the fac-tors is used.Example:

    Elongation of 20 96 on 5,65 & is equivalent to20 x 1,046 = 20.9 % on a 25 mm wide test piece of 6 mmthickness with a 50 mm gauge length (see table 4).

    From the example shown it will be seen that conversions in-volving other proportional gauge lengths can be obtained byprior or subsequent use of the factors shown in table 2.Tables 7 to 10 can be used to obtain some of these conver-sions, whilst tables 15 to 18 can be used to obtain elongationson fixed gauge lengths corresponding to 5,656.Similarly, tables 11 to 14 can be used for conversion to 4 fiand tables 19 to 22 for elongations on fixed gauge lengths car-responding to 4 a

    6 Conversion from a non-proportionsr gaugelength to another non-proportional gaugelength for test pieces of different cross-sectional areasIt is preferable for this calculation to be made in two stages withan initial conversion to 565 6.

    Elongation of 24 % on 200 mm for a 40 mm x 15 mm testpiece in terms of equivalent on a 30 mm x 10 mm test piecewith gauge lengths equal to 200, 100, and 50 mm.24 x l/O,957 = 25.1 % on 5,65& (see table 4)25,l x 0,916 = 23,0 % on 90 mm x 10 mm with 200 mmgauge length25,l x 1,066 = 25,l % on 90 mm x 10 mm with 100 mmgauge length25,l x 1,099 = 27,4 % on 30 mm x 10 mm with 50 mmgauge lengthElongation on other propodonal gauge lengths can be ob-tained by using the factors given in table 2.

    9 Use of figures 1 to 59.1 Figures 1 to 5 may be used as an alternative quick methodto obtain elongation conversions.

    9.2 Figures 1 to 4 may be used for c&versions between5,65G and 50 mm, 5,656 and 200 mm, 4fi and50 mm, and 4&and 200 mm gauge lengths, respectively.

    Example :To find the equivalent elongation on 5,55fic and 4 & to anelongation of 25 % on a 200 mm gauge length of a25 mm x 12.5 mm test piece of cross-sectional area312,5 mm2.The intersection of this.ordinate with the abscissa representingan elongation of .25 % on a 200 mm gauge length lies on thesloping line representing an elongation of 27,2 % on 5,55J &on figure 2 and at a position relative to the sloping lines onfigure 4 approximating to an elongation of 28,8 % on 44.

    9.3 Figure 5 may be used for the calculation of all elongationconversions.The formula given in clause 4 may be rewritten as

    00,127

    A2 =A, 5K2

    = A, ; 2 x A,

    where K, and K2 designate the proportionality ratios of any twotest pieces.

    K2 = 2

    Figure 5 shows the values of AlI2 = (KtlK$~ln.To use figure 5 it is necessary to perform the following opera-tions :

    a) calculate the value of proportionality K1 = (L,Ifi,Iand (K2 = L,Ifi2) for two test pieces;b) rew graphically the coefficient Ali = (K,lK,)*1z7;c) the elohgation obtained is A2 = ,ili2 x A,.

    Example :Elongation of 24 % on 200 mm for a 40 mm x 1.5 mm testpiece in terms of equivalent on a 30 mm x 10 mm test piecewith a gauge length equal to 100 mm.

    a) K, = 2 = -j $ = 8,16

    -_K2 - 2 = f& = 5,~7

    b) From figure 5, Ali = 1,W.cl Elongation required is 24 x 1.04 = 25,0 %.
