2. Text “The Long Walk” – notes

3. Vocabulary

4. Adjective order

1. Grammar revision - Exercise 1 – Verb Tenses

a. First, read the text to understand the general meaning.

John has always travelled a lot. In fact, he was only two years old when he first flew to the US. His

mother is Italian and his father is American. John was born in France, but his parents had met in

Cologne, Germany after they had been living there for five years. They met one day while John's

father was reading a book in the library and his mother sat down beside him. Anyway, John travels a

lot because his parents also travel a lot.

As a matter of fact, John is visiting his parents in France at the moment. He lives in New York now,

but has been visiting his parents for the past few weeks. He really enjoys living in New York, but he

also loves coming to visit his parents at least once a year.

This year he has flown over 50,000 miles for his job. He has been working for Jackson & Co. for

almost two years now. He's pretty sure that he'll be working for them next year as well. His job

requires a lot of travel. In fact, by the end of this year, he'll have travelled over 120,000 miles! His

next journey will be to Australia. He really doesn't like going to Australia because it is so far. This

time he is going to fly from Paris after a meeting with the company's French partner. He'll have been

sitting for over 18 hours by the time he arrives!

John was talking to his parents earlier this evening when his girlfriend from New York telephoned to

let him know that Jackson & Co. had decided to merge with a company in Australia. The two

companies had been negotiating for the past month, so it really wasn't much of a surprise. Of

course, this means that John will have to catch the next plane back to New York. He'll be meeting his

boss at this time tomorrow.

b. Next, underline the verbs (completely) in the text and above each verb write the name of the

verb tense:

present simple

c. Now, without looking at the text, complete the exercise on the next page. If you find this too

difficult, do the first paragraph, correct it, study the next paragraph and return to the text, and so

on.

d. If this exercise was very difficult for you, this could mean that you need to revise the basic verb

tenses you were supposed to study in ESO. What can you do? In your text book and in your work

book you have revision notes on the basic verb tenses. Study, at least, the Present Simple, Present

Continuous, Past Simple, Past Continuous and the Present Perfect. Then, after studying each, do

the exercises in both the students’ book and your work book. You can find additional revision

exercises (with solutions) online to help you with verb tenses in English. Obviously, start with the

easiest level and progress to more advanced levels. Remember that you need to know all of the

most common IRREGULAR VERBS and from time to time you should test yourself (you will find ashort list on pages 158 & 159 of the students’ book.

If you did well in this exercise, you can do two things: first, make sure that you know the reason

for choosing each verb tense (i.e. the principal uses of each tense) and secondly use your

knowledge to help other members of the class to improve their level (please).

2. Text Unit 1 – The Long Walk - Notes

Do exercises 1 and 2, then read the text. Look at the following advice:

1. Learn how to SKIM  the text. “Skimming”  means reading the text quickly to obtain a general

impression of what the text is about and what its main idea is. You do not need to understand every

word. Context is very important: things like a title, a photograph or a diagram may give you an ideaabout the main theme of the text.

2. Now read the comprehension questions. Make sure that you understand the questions and locate

the information they are asking for in the text.

3. Only skimming is usually not enough, so you must read the text again but this time read it more

carefully (don't forget that your time is limited time in exams). At this stage it is a good idea to try to

guess the meaning of unfamiliar words in a text; the context can help to do that. Guessing the words

from the context brings great advantages - you save time and it doesn't interrupt your

comprehension of the text. After that, use the glossary in your textbook and dictionaries (on paper

or online – e.g. “wordreference”). Also, note down any new words or expressions that you think may

be important.

4. It is really important to answer the questions with complete sentences in a way that the reader

can understand your answer independently of the question. It is also extremely important to use

your own words as much as you can. This means that you should copy as little as possible from the

text and the questions. Usually you should only base your answers on information found in the text.

Here are the four types of reading skills we use in every language. You usually use a combination of

these skills when you are answering comprehension questions.

Skimming - used to understand the "gist" or main idea

Scanning - used to find a particular piece of information

Extensive reading - used for pleasure and general understanding

Intensive reading - accurate reading for detailed understanding

4. Order of Adjectives.

In English, it is common to use more than one adjective before a noun — for example, “He's a silly

young fool,” or “She's a smart, energetic woman.” When you use more than one adjective, you have

to put them in the right order, according to type.

1. The basic types of adjectives

Opinion

An opinion adjective explains what you think about something (other people may not

agree with you).

For example: silly, beautiful, horrible, difficult

SizeA size adjective, of course, tells you how big or small something is.

For example: large, tiny, enormous, little

AgeAn age adjective tells you how young or old something or someone is.

For example: ancient, new, young, old

ShapeA shape adjective describes the shape of something.

For example: square, round, flat, rectangular

ColourA colour adjective, of course, describes the colour of something.

For example: blue, pink, reddish, grey

OriginAn origin adjective describes where something comes from.

For example: French, lunar, American, eastern, Greek

MaterialA material adjective describes what something is made from.

For example: wooden, metal, cotton, paper

Purpose

A purpose adjective describes what something is used for. These adjectives often end

with “-ing”.

For example: sleeping (as in “a sleeping bag”), fishing (as in “a fishing village”)
