CARING - Considering the Needs of Others

How lucky we are to have so many delightfully honest students who are conscious of the need to be truthful in their deeds and words. Property returned to the rightful person, handing in of money that is found on the playground, placing property in the lost property box are all signs of our students’ integrity. The school P&C fundraises to provide extra funds to assist the school to run programs, and obtain necessary equipment, etc. The school contribution is a nominal amount ($45 which covers the 40 weeks of learning in 2014) set by the school, keeping in mind the ever increasing costs in our daily lives, to help fill the gap in the budget and to provide a quality education to your child. The School Contribution may be paid at a later date, if families are unable to pay it at the beginning of the year. Please call Hazel in the Office to discuss.

We congratulate Kale on his experience representing Australia in the Ice Hockey in Quebec. Kale says the games were extremely challenging, as the opponents were very professional, training up to 4 times a week. He really valued the experience and was proud to represent Australia in the games.

Last week we also had students trial for the Engadine PSSA side for soccer. Kale, Zac, Allyssa, Lucy, Brooke and Maliya are gave of their best efforts in a competitive environment. We congratulate Maliya and Allyssa who were successful in making it into the team.

Bedwetting - Don’t live with it!

“Bedwetting is common in children and causes anxiety ”

Bedwetting (enuresis) is a problem for one third of five year olds. Some wet occasionally, others every night. Most chil-dren will eventually stop wetting the bed but it is impossible to predict when this will occur, with some still bedwetting into their teenage years. Surprisingly about 2% of those between sixteen and sixty still wet the bed several times a week. Recent research has found that older children and those who wet more than three nights a week are unlikely to outgrow the problem in the next twelve months. They need to commence treatment to solve the problem.

Causes - Most children have a combination of factors combining to cause the problem such as: - a small bladder capacity; - production of large volumes of urine overnight; - very deep sleep; and constipation.

Treatment - Various methods have been used to treat the problem including bedwetting alarms, medication e.g. desmopressin (Minirin), drinking and bladder training programs. Unfortunately there is great variation in success rates with different programs. Our experience has shown that it is essential to follow a structured program with each step followed in the correct order and then results are very good.

Our program recommends: - a drinking program improves the connection between the bladder and the brain and helps to increase bladder capacity; - stopping foods and drinks which may interfere with vasopressin, the hormone which concentrates the urine at night; - treatment of constipation; - use of a bedwetting alarm if necessary; and - rarely medication. For more information and related products contact The Bedwetting Institute on 1300 135 796 between noon and 6pm or on www.bedwettinginstitute.com.au .
