O’Connor Quartet at the QF reception was the legendary Bob Mintzer. Mark serves on the QF Advisory Board and is a prominent teacher and saxophonist in the Chicago area.

Another personal highlight was seeing the recognition of the Music Industry award to NAMM president and CEO, Joe Lamond. During Joe’s leadership, NAMM has spearheaded many of the most successful music advocacy efforts in history including the creation of the Support Music Coalition, the “Washington DC Fly-In” national lobby-ing efforts for Music Education, and has played a prominent role on the Music Achievement Council. Bravo-well de-

served! You make the Music Industry proud of our partnership with Music Education!

Finally, as many of you may know, the Midwest Clinic was founded over six

Midwest Clinic Reflections By George Quinlan, Jr.

Many of us enjoy the Midwest Clinic as a delightful December ritual that remains a constant in our ever-changing lives. A time to refresh, learn new things, strengthen our relationships, and ease into the Holiday season.

The 67th Annual Midwest Clinic was no exception. The IL-IN-MI was well rep-resented with fine performances by school ensembles from McCracken MS (Skokie) - Chip DeStefano, Lockport HS - Brian Covey & Andrew Beckwith, Wheeling HS-Brian Logan, Creekside MS-Wendy Higdon & Chris Grifa, VanderCook College of Music—Dr. Charles Menghini & Stacey Lar-son Dolan, Naperville North HS-Dan Moore & Brian Van Kley, and of course, the Michigan State University Wind Symphony.

Professional musicians from the Chicago Symphony Brass section, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and the Chicago Chamber Musicians performed as well. Bryan Miller of Leyden HS conducted two reading sessions and Huntley HS Wind Ensemble—Nick Konwerski and Franklin MS Orchestra (Wheaton) - Carrie Provost participated in a Re-hearsal Lab Sessions. Many area educa-tors participated in educational sessions as well including: Greg Bimm, Ken Snoeck, Rachel Maxwell, Richard Dunscomb, Rob Parton, Rebecca Op-penheim, Brayer Teague, Bill Koch, Steve Nendza, Thomas Bough, Phillip Serna, Enrique Vilaseco, and my friend and Downbeat magazine editor, Frank Alkyer.

A very s p e c i a l treat was provided by East-man Mu-sic Com-pany - maker of the new 5 2 n d

decades ago by a college, a music pub-lisher, and a music retailer. The college, VanderCook College of Music has per-formed at every Midwest Clinic since it’s conception. (I proudly have served on the Board of Trustees for many years).

The publisher, Kjos relocated to sunny California but still is represented on the Midwest Board of Directors by Mark Kjos.

The retailer, Lyons Music no longer exists but the Midwest Board of Direc-tors has typically included a retailer for many years including Howard Lyons, Ziggy Coyle, & Denny Senseney.

I am very proud and honored to have been invited to serve on the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors starting in 2014 and look forward to helping to carry on the proud tradition of excel-lence of this organization.

Awards

It’s often said that being recognized by your peers for outstanding work is the ultimate compliment. Have you often wished you had a special way to thank an important mentor or colleague who helped you advance in your career? Do you wish to recognize an up and coming “superstar” in your area? Now’s your chance...nominate that person for this special award. Recognizing excellence in the music education profession since 1989, we proudly announce the opening of nominations for this prestigious award. Since the inception over 150 of your colleagues have been recognized f o r t h e i r o u t s t a n d i n g c o n t r i b u t i o n s t o M u s i c Education. You will find a nomination form above. You

can also use our website, and e-mail your nomination to us ([email protected]). Take a moment and complete the nomination form before March 1st. Your nominations will be sent to a selection committee for final selection that comprises previous award winners (see the list on page four). In addition, this committee will select a winner of the John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award, which is

dedicated to our first guest speaker at the 1989 awards program, Mr. John Paynter of Northwestern University. Please take time to nominate an important colleague or men-tor for this worthy recognition. With the QF expansion in Indi-ana & Michigan this recogni-tion program was expanded beyond the Chicagoland area with the inception of the Mi-chiana Outstanding Music Edu-cator Awards recognizing Indi-ana and Michigan music educa-tors. Winners will be announced in the Spring issue of Quarter Notes and presented at an awards ceremony in June.

have for one another. Big smiles were in a b u n d a n c e . Imagine his future bio – at age 9, he conducted members of the Chicago Symphony… Then, immediately after the concert, I shouted ideas for the next concert and a couple things seemed to get the strongest response: that next year we perform Hoedown from Rodeo which then inspired the suggestion that we go FULL ORCHESTRA!!! Already enough wind, brass, and percussion musicians have agreed to join the group to make it possible. Let's DO it!

And, let's go BIG! This summer June 21 will be on a Saturday. If we play at 10:00AM on a Saturday at Daley Plaza we won't have the same foot traffic that we had last summer. So, let's bring our own fans with us. Encourage your friends and relatives to attend the concert. There is a slight chance the concert may be at Millennium Park - slight. The City of Chicago and Rush Hour Concerts are working on that possibility right now which gives us another reason to think BIG! We have time that - given the nature of the CAN DO crowd that we are - all things are possible. The more that show up the stronger the message we send to our future orchestra friends.

Here's what I mean.

To me, my inspiration for Rise and Shine is to build on the theme of the public music festivals once held in downtown Chicago in the late 1800's that featured orchestras numbering in the hundreds.

Discounted Instruments now Available!

WHEW! The Midwest instruments are now secure and available for purchase at substantial discounts. We provided more basses and cellos than ever this year so the selection is wide ranging – top of the line fractional violins and violas, full size cellos, and, either 3/4 or 7/8 basses. I’ve already received notes of thanks from the directors who used them and they mentioned their appreciation for the quality of instruments available to them for these performances. Now it’s your turn to take advantage of another of the many benefits we get from having the Midwest Conference in our hometown.

Chicagoland Educator Orchestra

The collective energy of a mixture of generations of orchestra teachers is vibrant. The Chicagoland Educator Orchestra is demonstrative proof that the Midwest verve is back. What a great room to be in when this group gathers. Bravo to you all!

From the Vendors

Thank you for stopping by the vendor booths at Midwest! Your presence there enables me to garner the attention I need to keep QF on the vanguard of the string instrument industry. For example, maybe you noticed the Mittenwald, Germany made Leonhardt Montagnana cello at the Eastman booth? WOW! What an amazing cello. I ordered it last summer specifically for the Eastman Midwest booth. When Lynn Latham played it in her session, that was the first time I had had the chance to hear it. What a great sounding cello and it is made of beautiful wood. Someone is going to end up with a cello which, not only sounds amazing, it looks amazing too. Check it out:

Rise and Shine! Yes! Again! Last week I received word from both the Executive Director and the Artistic Development Director of Rush Hour Concerts that they not only would like the Rise and Shine Orchestra to participate in Make Music Chicago event on June 21, But (*ahem*), they asked me to lead the group. Sorry Ricardo.

It's great news. The continuing response I have received since last June has been sincerely overwhelming. Now, to do it again!

When I initially chose the literature for last year, I had no idea who would actually show up. So, I chose literature for all performing levels including first concert material. And, how beautifully tender the moment was when our young conductor lead the Rise and Shine Orchestra - including members of the Chicago Symphony- in Merle Isaac's Apollo Suite. I can tell you that that piece was performed with as much love as genuine musicians

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stem-ming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello; serving as a clinician and consultant for Conn-Selmer; and, from his experience as general manager of the Wil-liam Harris Lee Workshop. Remaining active as a clinician and teacher, Lloyd directs the Silver Strings Ensemble that consists of adult learners of the stringed instruments and has performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. One of his specialties, orchestral workshops tracing the elements of the making of a stringed instrument and associating those to the elements necessary to produce quality tone on a stringed instrument, have become very popular with our Illinois and Indiana teachers. To schedule a workshop or step-up day, call

his office at our Burr Ridge location. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instrument. You’ve see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world!

They had two bands perform from 12pm – 2pm made up of their 4th/5th grade students and high school students. Danielle Hayes, Chaney-Monge performed at Sunnyhill Nursing Home in Joliet with Christmas Songs. Ultrasonic Cleaning for Marching Brass Instruments

Looking for a great way to protect your

marching brass instruments AND stretch

your repair budget?

During the months of January and Febru-ary all marching brass instruments will receive a school discount of 20% on ul-trasonic cleaning. Are you familiar with this process? Ultrasonic cleaning is the most modern and simply the best method of brass in-strument cleaning. Replacing antiquated acids and chemicals, an ultrasonic ma-chine uses sound waves to clean your sousaphones, mellophones, and marching brass instruments. The ultrasonic process is environmentally friendly and safer for our technicians and your students. It is the most thorough and efficient method. Your instruments will be picked up, ultra-sonically cleaned, lubricated, restored to good playing condition with new corks and felts and returned to your school by your QF representative. Dent removal, silver hand-polishing, etc. can also be provided at additional cost to restore the beauty of your brass instruments!

Q&Q&Q&Q&

This is back when Cincinnati and Chicago were competing to be the cultural center of the Midwest. The CITIZENS OF CHICAGO (the past of which we will someday be among) hosted music festivals of orchestras in the hundreds and choruses in the thousands. I ask, “What did they have that we don't have too?” In our day we have trains to ride to get downtown, places to park our motorized vehicles, and toilets that flush! (Hopefully) So, let's DO it! Why not?!!

To keep in touch about the Rise and Shine Orchestra performance and updates, there is a group on Facebook called “Rise and Shine Orchestra”. You can check in there and also check the page www.rushhour.org or the page www.makemusicchicago.com. The sooner you get involved, the sooner and BIGGER the plans that unfold. One thing I’m looking into is to find donors to purchase the music we will perform. Then, at the conclusion of the concert, we donate the music to growing orchestra programs in need. For things like this to happen, I need your support and willingness to join the Facebook page and register with Rush Hour as a Rise and Shine participant. Our numbers matter. In fact, that so many of you showed up last year has enlivened support from varying and unexpected sources. We can be indentified as “the power of the people” when we proactively show up and perform showing our appreciation to the CITIZENS OF CHICAGO for giving us such a strong orchestral tradition upon which to build toward our future.

Fresh from the 2013 Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic are many new jazz specific publications from the usual suspects: Hal Leonard and Alfred Publishing.. In addition to the usual series add-ons to their Jazz Play-Along

series, new from Hal Leonard are some “must have” items. The real Book

Volume 5 for C Instruments is now available. With a retail price of $35, this volume contains over 400 songs. Included are some more obscure standards from ALL eras of jazz as well as more contemporary

songs that have gradually become standard tunes over the past 20 years. These books are an invaluable research and training tool…..but, be sure to get your students “away from the paper” and using their ears as soon as possible! Also from Hal Leonard is the John

Coltrane Omnibook. For years, the “go to” book on jazz vocabulary was the

C h a r l i e P a r k e r

Ominbook, and this is by far the most obvious next volume in the jazz l a n g u a g e l i n e a g e . Available for Bb, Eb, C a n d B a s s C l e f

instruments, all books retail for $24.99 except the Bb book, which sells for $19.99. Again, this is a must have for any serious jazz student or player.

For anyone visiting the Alfred Publishing booth at the Midwest Clinic, you most likely noticed the great number of jazz specific books for percussionists and drummers. Big Band Drumming

Fill-osophy offers a comprehensive approach to playing and interpreting fills in a big band setting. With advice on how to interpret section and ensemble figures, Steve Fidyk and Dave Black give detailed information that will strengthen the drummer’s ability to recognize one-, two-, and four-bar section/ensemble figures quickly and easily. The companion MP3 CD contains over 75 reference and play-along examples extracted from real drum charts. They have been “looped” or repeated for thorough study. With Big Band Drumming at First Sight, Steve Fidyk offers a comprehensive approach to improve sight-reading skills in a big band setting. With advice on how to accompany different musical forms and playing styles, Fidyk gives detailed information that will strengthen your ability to recognize band figures and beat patterns quickly and easily. The companion play-along MP3 CD features 10 arrangements of varying style with beat and figure examples extracted from each score that are "looped" or repeated several times for thorough study.

Finally, also from Hal Leonard is the Downbeat Magazine 75th Anniversary Anthology entitled The

Great Jazz Interviews.

Edited by Frank Alkyer and retailing for $29.99, this book inc ludes interviews with literally every great jazz artist and personality that ever lived! For those of you looking to showcase your jazz combos along side some of Chicago’s finest, the Fitzgerald’s Sidebar Sessions is about to complete its first year and it is proving to be a great venue for some of the finest jazz artists in Chicago. The series regularly features the likes of Andy Baker, Steve Million, Jim Gailorretto, Chris Madsen, Steve Duke, and Mark Colby, just to name a few. This jazz series is sponsored in part by WDCB 90.9FM as well as Q&F and Vandoren. Please contact me directly at [email protected] if you have a school jazz combo you would like featured on this series.

Congratulations to the winners of the raffle for FREE instruments at the Midwest Clinic Eastman Display sponsored by QF.

New this season from Alfred, comes another collection from John O’Reilly and Mark Williams. O’Reilly and Williams have composed over 100 creative and unique pieces for young and intermediate band students, correlating with Accent on Achievement (a method written by O’Reilly and Williams). Now, those pieces are being collected into corresponding books for bands to play together.

This season brings us the March and Concert Favorites Collections. O’Reilly

and Williams marches, as seen in the Accent on Achievement books are now all found in the Accent on Performance March Collection.

The concert pieces can be found in Accent on Performance Concert Favorites. There is a separate book for flute, oboe, bassoon, 1stclarinet, 2ndclarinet, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bari sax, 1st trumpet,

2 n d t r ump e t , ho r n , trombone, baritone b.c., baritone t.c., tuba, 1st percussion, 2nd percussion, conductor’s score and a piano book. The compilations are sure to

keep any band student engaged and encouraged to learn. Alfred also has published several great rock pieces arranged for band and orchestra this season. Pinball Wizard, originally composed by Peter Townshend for The Who’s rock opera Pinball Wizard, is a tune that is going to be easily recognized by students and audiences alike. Arranged for band or orchestra by Patrick Rozsell, this piece is meant

to bring a well known rock tune into the classroom to teach articulation, dynamics and rhythm. My Generation is another classic by The Who arranged for band or orchestra by Douglas E. Wagner. This is another example of a classic tune meant to thrill and teach students and be easy listening for concert goers. As we move into the competition time of the year, Hal Leonard has published a few new real books. The first one to notice is Real Book for Bass Clef. Since the 1970s, The Real

Book has been a popular book for gigging jazz musicians. Hal Leonard is proud to publish editions of the original volumes as well as exciting new volumes to carry on the tradition to new generations of players

in all styles of music! This all-new 4th volume presents 400 more songs, not previously available in any other volume, including “Ashes to Ashes”, “Button up Your Overcoat”, “Cocktails for Two”, “Days of Wine and Roses”, “Down with Love”, “A Foggy Day (In London Town)”, “The Good Life”, and many more. Editions are also available in C, B-flat, and E-flat. Another exciting real book from Hal Leonard is the John Coltrane Real Book. This fake book pays tribute to one of history’s most influential jazz musicians – John Coltrane. It contains over 100 of his most memorable works. Some of these works include “Afro Blue”, “Bye Bye

Blackbird”, “Crescent”, “Lush Life”, “Summertime” and so many more. Jazz musicians of all ages will enjoy getting to know Coltrane through this comprehensive fake book. Also new from Hal Leonard are a few folios for beginner to advanced players. West side story is a true favorite written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondhiem. Joel Boyd and Joshua Parman have compliled some of your favorite tunes into West Side Story Instrumental Solos. This folio for advanced players includes favorite tunes, such as “Jet S o n g ” , “ M a r i a ” , “America”, “I feel Pretty” and many more. This folio has separate books for flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, violin, viola and cello. Each book includes an enhanced CD. The CD contains piano accompaniment for each track as well as tempo adjustment software when used in a CD-Rom.
