Peter’s JottingsPeter’s JottingsHello everyone and welcome to Bourne Park.John has had a weekend away so it wasdown to me to do this evenings welcomenotes. This evening’s visitors are our nearneighbours Faversham Town who were pro-moted into our league after winning the Kentleague. We welcome their officials, players,especially old Brickies favourite Matt Bourne,and of course the match officials. This matchis the 2nd round of the Championship Cup,both teams had a bye in the first round. Bothteams have also agreed that this evening’smatch is also for the Bob Amor Trophy whichis currently held by Faversham. Bob Amorwas a former Faversham mayor, freeman andhonorary alderman who worked tirelessly forso many different groups and organisations.Bob, who was a president and patron ofFaversham Football club, died in 1977. TheFaversham branch of the labour party donat-ed a trophy to be contest-ed by Faversham andSittingbourne followingBob’s death.

We got back into winningways on Saturday with avictory over Whyteleafe,this was our 5th victory ina row over the Surreyclub. Whyteleafe seldom troubled Matt Reedin the Sittingbourne goal and the Whyteleafewoodwork was rattled twice in the first half,once after their new keeper Steve Northwoodpalmed Tom Bradbrook’s shot onto the cross-bar, whilst a bit later Jack Hoopers headerstruck a post so we could have had moregoals. Strangely I didn’t think we played any-where near as good in the game as we haddone in the two defeats previously at Arleseyin the Trophy and midweek in the leaguewhen I felt we played very well at times.Talking of our defeat at Arlesey that wasanother blow to our finances and things arenow getting to a critical state, especially as

the demise of the supporters club is yetanother income stream that is cut off from us.I know that my brother John often mentionsthe finances but i feel I really must warn thatthings can’t go on as they have been withfalling gates and if you want your club to sur-vive and compete at a decent level thenplease, please do all you can to help. Thereare many ways that you can do this, the mosteffective way as far as I am concerned is toof course attend matches! But try to encour-age a friend or 2 to join you as if we coulddouble our gate, not insurmountable consid-ering our current low starting point, we shouldbe OK. Other ways you can help are to jointhe club lottery, download a form from theweb site, go to a boot sale and give us yourproceeds!!!, book the cabin, use the bar,make yourself fat at the burger bar etc. Infact if anyone has got any ideas on how we

can make money, (nocriminal activitiesplease,) without having tohave those of us who arealready stretched in ourcommitment to the clubhelp, then please chatabout it to any committeemember, Phew got thatoff my chest!

Gary has added to the squad by signinganother young player in 18 year old KieronMcCann and he made a useful debut at theWhyteleafe game.

Don’t forget that we are away to ChathamTown this Saturday in a game brought for-ward as both us were without a game. Thenon the following Saturday we are home toleague newcomers Whitehawk.

Today’s Visitors - A Brief History

Faversham TownFaversham Town

The club origins go back to 1884 and subsequentlyentered the Kent League in 1894. Theclub name however was not consistant and turned ouot as Faversham Town, FavershamInvicta, Faversham Services, Faversham Rangers and Faversham Railway along with oth-ers before being disbanded a few years before the second World War.

Faversham Town reformed after the war and entered the Kent League in 1947 and moved totheir current home, Salters Lane in 1948. The club had a decent amateur side, but found thegoing tough against some of the senior Kent sides. Nethertheless Faversham won the KentAmateur Cup in 1957 & 1959.

With the Ken tLeague folding in 1959, the club had spells in the Aetolian and GreaterLondon Leagues. However, the revived Kent league was rejoined in 1968. Success soon fol-lowed and they were Kent league champions in 1970 and 1971. The Kent amateur cup waswon three years in a row 1972, 1973 and 1974.

After a breif flirtation with the Athenian League in the mid seventies the club came home tothe Kent league, winning the Kent Senior Trophy in 1977, repeating this success the follow-ing season and being crowned Kent League Champions for good measure in a remarkabledouble.

The Kent league was won yet again in 1990 season, but league form dipped in the 92/93season and was to stay that way for several seasons. The team did manage to reach thefinal of the Kent League Challenge Cup in 2000, but things were in rapid decline. Mattersreached crisis point in 2003 when the KCFA suspended the club for non payment of fines,with the club operators blaming just about everybody for the mess except themselves.

In the following months, the once proud Salters Lane was systematically wrecked by van-dals. Meanwhile, the club trustees led by businessman Ray Leader, fought a desparate bat-tle to heal a widening rift between with the previous regime over the ownership of the cluband ground.

In a separate document, the Faversham Town Independent Supporters Club had beenformed and quickly gained a membership of over 300 paid up members in the town. Thiswas despite the fact that the club had no team, no manager, and whose ground had beentotally wrecked by vandals and resembled a bombsite. Perhaps the real turning point came when the trustees and Independent Supporters commit-tee members got together one evening and declared an alliance to get the club back on itsfeet. An interim club committee was formed and the long road to recovery was started.

The revival was slow, but things started to happen. The ownership dispute was finally set-tled and access to the ground was obtained. Volenteer workers were, however confrontedwith completely smashed and vandalised buildings and grass that reached shoulder heightin places on what had been the pitch. A massive clear up operation began, but it was backbreaking work. Meanwhile paperwork was put in order with a new club constitution writtenand agreed.

The KCFA allowed the club to retain their coverted senior status, subject to several condi-tions. Local authority grants were applied for and secured, sponsorship deals were obtainedand the club embarked on a range of fundraising initiatives.Slowly but surely Salters Lane emerged in its former glory and then went even better withthe erection of brand new floodlights. The revival of the club and ground from the jaws ofdeath was nothing short of a miracle, with a story that would surely rival the efforts to reviveboth ‘The Valley’ at Charlton and Accrington Stanley FC.

The first season back in 05/06 was in the Kent County League where the runners up spotwas achieved. Having passed various grond grading inspections promotion to the promotionto the Kent league was obtained and Faversham Town had at last ‘come home’.

A goal at the end of each half sealed a win forthe Brickies but they will be disappointed thatthey didn�t score more. This win takes themback into a play off place albeit they haveplayed a game more than some of the chasingpack.

Sittingbourne gave a start to Kieron McCannwho signed for the club just hours earlier,McCann, released by Cray earlier this week,turned out for Whyteleafe againstSittingbourne last season, Whyteleafe also hada new signing in their keeper SteveNorthwood, Northwood had turned out forSittingbourne in some of their pre›seasonfriendlies. Tom Bradbrook was back fromAmerica but Laurence Harvey was still outinjured and Hicham Akhazzan was on thebench.

Matt Reed hardly had a shot to save all matchand Sittingbourne had the edge for most ofthe game but it was the Leafe who took thelead when on 9 minutes they won a cornerand Dan Oakins was given the freedom of theSittingbourne area and he sent a first timeshot into the Sittingbourne net.

Sittingbourne would have drawn level on 17minutes but Northwood made a superbinstinctive save palming Bradbrook�s shot ontothe crossbar where it bounced out to PaulSemakula, but again the Leafe keeper did wellthis, time turning Semakula�s shot round apost for a corner. Ryan Golding fired the ballover the bar from the corner.

Sittingbourne hit the woodwork again 8 min›utes later this time it was a Sittingbourne man

who did it! Jack Hooper glancing a headeragainst a post from a corner.

Leafe were almost caught out on 44 minuteswhen Bradbrook and Golding raced awaychased by a single Leafe player, Goldingunselfishly passed inside to Bradbrook whoseemed odds on to score but the normallyastute striker fired the ball straight atNorthwood who managed to deflect the ballaway. Leafe barely had time to breath a sighof relief when Sittingbourne won a corner, theball was headed down at the far post toBradbrook who this time clinically despatchedit into the Leafe net and Sittingbourne werelevel.

Bradbrook fired narrowly wide 4 minutes intothe new half but generally Chances were fewand far between in this period but whatchances there were fell to Sittingbourne. On78 minutes Bradbrook�s shot was headed offthe Leafe goal line, the ball was crashed backand appeared to hit a Leafe arm, the expectedcry for a penalty materialised but if one hadbeen given it would have been harsh.

The game seemed to be heading for a drawwhen with just 3 minutes to go Leafe�s captainFred Fleming failed to clear the ball whichinstead went straight to Hicham Akhazzan whohad replaced Golding, Akhazzan found BillyManners who powered into the Leafe area andthen struck a shot that gave Northwood nochance and the Brickies had notched up their5th straight win in a row over the Surrey club.

Chatham Town last defeated their nearneighbours Sittingbourne on Boxing Day2003 and this dismal record was extended inthis game when they never looked likely tocome away from Bourne Park with anything.Their task wasn’t made any easier whenAaron Firth picked up two yellow cards in thespace of 4 minutes at the end of the first halfand made the long walk back to the dressingroom.There was a taste of things to come forChatham within minutes of the kick off whengood work by leading scorer Tom Bradbrookon the left ended in a pass to Ross Morleywhose shot was pushed round a post by theChatham keeper keeper James Tedder.It didn't however take much longer forSittingbourne to take the lead when on 12minutes Laurence Harvey latched onto acorner ball firing it through a ruck of playersand in the net off a post.The rest of the half was one ofSittingbourne’s dominance.Just a minute into the second halfBradbrook's cross wasn't held by Tedder anda shot came crashing in that was cleared offthe line by Lee Maskell. Chatham's reliefwas short lived as on 55 minutes Hooperand Bradbrook combined to set RyanGolding on his way, he rounded Tedder andfired into an empty net to put Sittingbournetwo up. Godalming Town 0 Sittingbourne 2

Godalming are normally a difficult side toplay against - but not this time. Sittingbournestarted where they left off against Chathamand never looked back. It seemed surprisingthat Godalming were second in the leagueand unbeaten at home as they seemed tooffer little in the way of threat. Two goals in the first half by Akhazzan andBradbrook were enought to give the Brickiesa comfortable win.

Ramsgate 0 Sittingbourne 2

Sittingbourne easily completed the doubleover their Kent neighbours and made it fourwins in a row with nine goals scored andnone conceded.Ramsgate were overrun in the early stagesand didn't threaten until 27 minutes whenNick Reeves fouled ex Brickie Mark Lovellon the edge of the area but the resulting freekick was safely cleared. Then came amoment of magic as Horlock set off on amazy run that ended up with a stunning shotthat flew by Krunic and into the roof of thenet and Sittingbourne had deservedly takenthe lead. Ramsgate’s young keeper seemed to likegoing “walkabout” and it got him in trouble inthe second half when he came out to try tohead off a ball to Semakula but Semakulagot round him and found an unmarkedGolding who fired the ball into an empty netto double the Brickies lead. Whitstable 2 Sittingbourne 1

Whitstable certainly did’nt look like a sidesecond from bottom of the league andSittingbourne were finding it difficult to findthe rhythm and confidence that they hadshown in their last two games. With 69 minutes on the clock Ross Morleyforged his way into the Whitstable areawhere he crossed to Ryan Golding whosefirst time effort whistled into the net.Whitstable responded well on 77 minutesCory raced away and fired in a cracking shotto pull Whitstable level.Both sides went all out for the winner andunfortunately for the Bourne it went toWhitstable who won a corner in the 3rdminute of time added on which was clearedand it looked as though the game would endwith honours even but then they wereawarded a free kick some 30 yards out onthe left. The ball was whipped in by Cornhilland Neal got the faintest of touches and itsped into the Sittingbourne net to giveWhitstable an unlikely victory.

Its always tough at Burgess Hill and to make itharder they had a point to prove having lost 6-0 in their last game at Whitehawk.This then was a game full of commitment fromboth sides and that helped make it a crackingspectacle, despite the eventual result, andwas an excellent advertisement for RymanLeague football. The score doesn't fully reflectthe game as Sittingbourne matched BurgessHill all the way and if anything looked livelierand more skilful than their hosts for long peri-ods but they had their backs to the wall after24 minutes when Sam Collins was red cardedfor a sliding tackle. They were a goal down atthe time and so it was a mountain to climb butsomehow the young Brickies, missing TomBradbrook and Laurence Harvey, gave their all.Debutant Dan Palfrey was having a crackinggame at the back before having to go offinjured as was the versatile Jack Hooper, butin truth the whole team played their socks off inan effort to draw level. Burgess Hill started well having a great chanceon 2 minutes when Sanso shot narrowly pastthe far post but Sittingbourne soon got intogear and Horlock had a shot bounce off theHillians keeper. The opening goal though wentto the Hillians after hesitation in the defencemeant that the chance was lost to clear the balland instead it was crossed to Danny Curd whofired it past Matt Reed, then the lead was near-ly doubled when the gangling DannyGainsford, always a thorn in Sittingbourne'sside, hit the Brickies bar with a crashing head-er. Despite Sittingbourne being a man down itwas end to end stuff and Horlock had anothereffort well held by the Hillians keeper on 30minutes whilst 10 minutes later the busy Sansohad a shot bounce off Reed that went back tothe Italian who then fired the ball over the thebar. Sittingbourne then almost equalised righton time but Horlock's corner was glanced byReeves straight at the keeper.

Sittingbourne began the second half in GungHo fashion moving the ball round well and get-ting men up in great numbers and on 53 min-utes this paid off when when Nick Reeves senta beauty into the Burgess Hill net followingHorlock's corner to bring the scores level, thenamazingly the ten men got on top and HichamAkhazzan had an effort well held at the far postby Harding.

The Hillians then began to press again and afree kick found Gainsford who sent his shotwide.

Alarm bells were ringing for the Brickies whenCurd had two efforts, the first sailing over thebar and the second blocked by a good stopfrom Reed, then on 69 minutes, a mazy runfrom Sanso, ended in a great shot that flewpast Reed and the Hillians had taken the leadonce more.

Sittingbourne never gave up but Burgess Hillcontinued to press with the ten men tiring,Sanso had a another effort well saved by Reedbut at the other end Horlock's free kick curledagonisingly wide of a Hillian post, then with 91minutes on the clock indecision betweenManners and Reed led to the ball crossed intoSittingbourne's area where Will Berry waslurking and he fired in number 3 to give theHillians a flattering score line.

Right at the death Joe Horlock, who had con-tributed so much to Sittingbourne's cause, losthis cool and kicked the ball at a Town playerand he too took the long walk to the dressingroom. it must be something about the EastSussex air and Red Cards for the Brickies forthat makes 3 now in two trips to the County.

Strange to say that this was actually anencouraging performance from the Brickiesand as long as they don't drop too many morepoints they could still cause plenty of upsets inthe division and who knows still make the playoffs.

Just over four years ago, Hinckley United’s Matt Gadsby collapsed and died during aConference North game at Harrogate Town.

Former Walsall, Mansfield, Kidderminster and Forest Green defender Gadsby had justturned 27 and had been living with an undetected heart condition known as arrhythmogenicright ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC).

His wife, Sarah, had given birth to their first child, Amelia, just eight months earlier. As aNon-League player with a daughter of the same name and age, I sat with tears streamingdown my face as I read Internet tributes from family, team-mates, opponents and strangers.An interview with Sarah on the first anniversary of the husband’s death was the mostheartrending I’ve done.

Gadsby’s condition also claimed the life of Motherwell’s Phil O’Donnell, and was similar tothe more high-profile death of Manchester City midfielder Marc Vivien Foe, who sufferedhypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

Gadsby wasn’t, and won’t be, alone in passing away during a Non-League game. Just a fewmonths earlier, striker Paul Sykes died during a game for Folkestone Invicta against his for-mer side Margate.

Sykes was a year older but, like Gadsby, had recently become a father for the first time andwas suffering from ARVC, where the right ventricular muscle cells are progressivelyreplaced by fibrous tissue and fat.

The startling truth is that wherever you are watching your football today, there is likely to beat least one player in that league playing with potentially fatal heart condition they knownothing about.

Steve Cox, director of screening at Cardiac Risk in the Young, recently told our sister publi-cation, The Football League Paper: “We’ve been screening people for 15 years and whatwe’ve found is that around one in 300 people will have an underlying cardiac abnormalitythat they are unaware of.”

Screening in the form of an electrocardiogram (ECG) costs just £35, and there are calls forit to be mandatory for all professional footballers.But what about the thousands in the game’s grass-roots? In a 22-team league there are 352footballers every Saturday and most Tuesdays not being screened.Cox added: “Academy players will be screened, as will guys in the Premier League. Butthese incidents don’t occur very often at that high level. They occur on the way up, often ingrass-roots football, but they only get published in local papers so nobody hears about it.“Obviously finance is an issue. There are a lot of people playing football at all the differentlevels and to screen them all would be very expensive. But we feel that £35 is a reasonableamount.”
