[t appears that there are now twol+4MHz transatlantic beacons on air.lhe first is from locator square FN84.n Nova Scotia and it operates on144.3001\/frIz +/- 2A0Hz (our SSBJalling Frequenq). ,ACKET PROGRAM TSTHOST REVIEW
'he packet program that I run on my PC 24 hours a day
s.u itog.u* "u-tttO fSfffOST' I moved onto using this
togram abut a ysar ago, I think, after running since I
;ot-sta(ed in Paiket, J basic dumb terminal and BSX
iNC t t up. As much as I found that this basic method
uu, u.ry .utita"tory for everyday packetit-did have the
rg. a.i*ofuU that if a message went of the-top of the
,.i.r, you had to re-read it again to see the specific
nformation plus if you wanted to save or transmit files
rou coutO"'i do this. From that humble beginaing I
;;tJ onto the BAYCOM set up but even here I felt
here were quite a few shortcomimgs, Baycom users will
no doubt tei me differently. So why TSTHOST you rnay
ask ? Well I intended to try and use WINPAC due to the
lacilrty that you didn't have to connect to the local BBS
and ask for the current listings as it automatically did
Ittir, oofottrnut ly the PC that I ha4 a 285, couldn't run
the WNPPAC program and in between times I had come
across the fSfffOSf program which runs as a DOS
iu..J tyu.* and offered me the same facility that
WINPAC used.
The TSTHOST program I find is really versatile in its use
in that it can be set up to run in a full automatic set up'
For instance, my set up I run 24 hours a day where I
automatically Forward to GBTEDN (my local BBS) evew
hour, L..e-iroe Forwarded Mail also from GBTEDN as
and when GBTEDN forwards, every hour I also connect
to GBTEDN and pult of the list headings for the latest
mail received at GBTEDN and with these I create rny
LTNPROTO Listings which any message I want to read
can be marked and the progrum will then automatically
connect to GBTEDN anA aowntoaA the message putting it
in my PMS, I also at 01:00 run a MACRO, written by
myself, which exits out of the program, kills 1ny old mail
unU ttt n reloads TSTHOST once again' Other facilities
include is the ability to provide a SERVER set up" this is
something I am working on at the momen| I can use
;;ir; " 6w of the DoS commands directlv ftom the
teyUoar4 very handy facility. The PMS set up is great in
the sense that you can append files to messages' edit
messages, print messages to s''tem linepdnter' save them
to filei tt" Ottt t facilities allow you to create files as the
systemis running in any directory on Yo1r1 system' I am
usrng this facility to write this' Edit files' copy files'
,"ouit" files, delete files are also all available'
Setting up the program. Well it needs a front driver and
ttre orie iuse ii TFPCX but I understand others also can
be usedbut I don't have any knowledge of what and how'
LG all these sort of programs there are quite a few files
that need to be set up to get it all up and running but too
be truthfull once you understand what it it trying to do it
iJfV t qurte simple. Infact the setting up of TSTHOST
i;;& simitiar indeed to FBB which runs in the normal
BBS';. With the front driver there is the ability to have
connected 8 separate radios all working on different
frequencies, I can't see anyone doing that" anyway I
-^-^^.^^rr-, -',- L^ih r mptreq anrl ? metres on diffefent
channels all at the same time' I was trying to connect up
ZOlms as well but unfornrnately the 386 machine's BIOS
oJy u...pt, COMI and COM2 ports which really is a
shame.
One facility I didn't rnention is that you can leave a
;;;;;; in my PMS for someone else and it will be
forwar?ed on. i'e. Let us say Ron GM4IKU cannot get
into ceTEnN but he can connect to meand that he
wanted to send a message to Margaret GlvlOALX then
Ron would connect to *i' which automalica]lY puts him
in my PMS, and type SP GM0ALX @ GB&JED which
*oofb u*f. ni* to pot io tte Tifle ofthe mess:lge' then the
te*. Once the message was completed it would be
automatically forwardedto GBTEDN at the next Forward
ti*. u"A then onto Margaret via the normal routes'
In zummary then I have found TSTHOST to be a very
po*.tnnf and versatile progtam an{I can :T "o
way at
ihi. ti*. on why I would *unt to change from using it'
egain f have only touched a little on what it has to offer
;r"werr to this daL I haven't fully tried all its facilities' If
il; interested in tryrng the progrlm lel me know and
i "u"
gi". you a copy. Why not let others know what you
think--f vo* pu.f"t program I am sure they would be
interested.Bob GM4UYZ @ GBTEDN

On Friday, 2fth March, Tom lVylie GM4FDM kindly
came across from Glasgow to give the club a talk on tJrc
GM5VG/P (WinE Yett Contest Group) eryedition to the
island of St Kilda. Sadly from the club point of view only
a total of 18 peopte turned up to listen to a very
interesting and funny talk. Tom went on to explain on
how they managed to get permission to actually operate
from St Kilda, which turned out to h a torfurous task by
getting one lncck back after another by SNH (Scottish
National Heritage), but eventually they got the permis-
sion at the very last minute which allowed them to go'
They made their way to St Kilda by going on the
Coasguard Helicopter from Stornaway and on arriving
there they were met by the army personel who took all
their gear from the helicopter to where they were going to
operate. In total they were wer awed by the hospitality

which showed different aspects from the trip i'e' the

different scenes of the island. They definately seemed to
enjoy their trip and I know from who attended the talk we

Shack Atteck by GM0WRYThis month its my turn to give the shack aftack tour.
There really isn't very much in it. At the rear is my trustyPC. I put ii together,-but it has grown over the yean. nr-elp9c. i! now a 686L 200Mhz CPU, 48Meg RAM, 24 speedCO-ROU, usual multimedia add ons and-an SVGA Ivioni-tor. To the right belcw the lamp is my ICOM 706, the radiothat I always wante4 except it does not hgve certainqualities I would like. I phoned ICOM just before I boughtit, they assured me there would not be an update nor a unitwith an ATU & DSP. Well what do you know 5 monthslater out comes the IC-746 with all lhe stuff vou wouldrvant, DSP, ATU erc. Thanks ICOM! To the right is myPK88 (which is still for sale) rvhich is not used much thesedays. I use the port in the PC for SSTV {Watch out nerlmonth for nry review of the new SSTV program WinPix).
