Iowa State Assistant Coach Megan Kerns earned 2008 All-America honors from Soccer Buzz while playing with the Gators.

She led Florida that season with 35 points off team-high totals for both goals (13) and assists (9).

She led the Southeastern Conference in goals, second in points and third in assist in 2008 Southeastern Conference play. Kerns was on the 2008 All-SEC first team as a senior.

What’s Next? Florida returns to Southeastern Conference play at No. 22 Texas A&M on Thursday, Sept. 21. The UF at TAMU match airs live on the SEC Network at 7 p.m. ET. It can be heard on ESPN 98.1 FM / 850 AM or via GatorVision.com. The Gators then return home to play host to Alabama on Sunday, Sept. 24. That match is set for 6 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium.

About the 2017 Gators The 2017 Gator team is made up 32 players. Among the nine newcomers are six freshmen and three transfers. Florida returns eight starters from the 2016 team that won the Southeastern Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Two Gators earned 2016 All-SEC honors. Redshirt senior Gabby Seiler was part of the 2016 All-SEC first team as a defender. She also was a 2014 All-SEC first-team selection while with Georgia. She transferred to UF after the 2014 season and sat out 2015 due to SEC transfer rules. Redshirt senior Kristen Cardano was part of the 2016 All-SEC second team.

Ten of the 16 Gators who earned points in 2016 return this season. Of the 169 points generated by the 2016 Gators, graduation claimed six players who contributed 87 points and 31 goals – Savannah Jordan (16 goals, 9 assists – 41 points), Meggie Dougherty Howard (8g, 12a – 28 pts), Brooke Sharp (4g, 1a – 9 pts), Pamela Begic (3g – 6pts), Betsy Middleton (2a – 2pts), Erika Nelson (1a – 1pt)

This summer, junior Briana Solis was second for Florida Krush of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) with three goals in her four appearances. Other current Gators in 2016 WPSL action this summer included Madison Alexander (Alliance Academy), Julia Lester, Haillie Lower and Kaylan Marckese (Tampa Bay United), Alyssa Howell, Cassie Owens, Gaby Rivera, and Sarah Troccoli (Florida SOL FC) and Melanie Monteagudo (FC Surge).

Gators were busy in the off season with various national team activities. Four

returning Gators were called into U.S. Age-Group National Team or tournaments since the conclusion of last season.

Three join Florida as transfers (Laís Araujo / ASA Junior College-Brooklyn; Parker Roberts / Kansas; Alex Stubblebine / Cincinnati). All three are eligible to compete for the Gators in 2017.

Nine Newcomers in 2017 Florida welcomes nine newcomers to its 2017 roster. This class brings experience from state, national and international levels – including some from the sport's top events. Deanne Rose was a member of Canada's bronze medal team at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, scoring Canada's first goal and assisting the game-winner in the bronze medal match. She is the third current Gator to play in the 2016 FIFA U-20 World Cup, starting each of Canada’s three matches. She and another signee, Laís Araujo, both represented their nations in 2016 Women's Under-20 World Cup play, with Araujo serving as Brazil's team captain. A third Gator newcomer, Parker Roberts, also played in the 2016 U-20 World Cup. She transferred to Florida after playing at Kansas as a freshman in 2015, but sat out the 2016 season due to U.S. U-20 National Team commitment. The other members of Florida class also bring impressive credentials.

Madison Alexander of Dorr, Mich., has been a member of U.S. Youth National teams

Samantha Earle was the 2013 Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) 2A State Player of the Year while with Gulliver Prep. She also played for Sunrise Soccer club, winners of the 2016 Disney Showcase.

Lauren Evans of Lithia attended Olympic Development Program (ODP) and id2 Player Development Program (PDP) Nike camps. She was part of Newsome H.S. teams which advanced to the 2016 and 2017 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 5A semifinals.

Ashley Pietra played goalkeeper at Gainesville’s Buchholz High School. She earned Gainesville Sun All-Area first-team honors in 2016 and 2017.

Alex Stubblebine of Ocala, Fla., transferred to join the Gators this summer after playing her freshman season at Cincinnati. She started four of her 14 appearances and scored a goal. A torn anterior cruciate ligament will sideline Stubblebine for the 2017 season.

Ailey Tebbett is the sixth from Gainesville to sign with the Gator soccer team. The goalkeeper from Oak Hall School also plays for Florida Elite Soccer Academy, winner of the 2015 U-16 Disney Soccer Showcase.

Gators Picked to Win 2017 SEC Title The Southeastern Conference soccer coaches voted Florida to win the 2017 title. Points were compiled on a 13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team. Florida is one of four SEC teams in the United Soccer Coaches preseason national rankings – No. 4 South Carolina, No. 7 Florida, No. 10 Auburn and No. 17 Arkansas. The Atlantic Coast Conference leads with six among the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25, followed by the Pac-12 (5), SEC (4), Big Ten (4) and Big 12 (2).

Three Gators on SEC Soccer Preseason Watch List Three Gators – Kristen Cardano, Gabby Seiler and Mayra Pelayo – are among the 51 players appearing on the 2017 Southeastern Conference Preseason Watch List. This will be the 25th season for SEC soccer. The Gator program begins its 23rd season in 2017 and leads the SEC in both SEC (14) and SEC Tournament (12) titles. The two Gator defenders earned All-SEC honors in 2016. Cardano was on the All-SEC second team and Seiler was part of the SEC first team for the second time, as she also was on the 2014 first team as a sophomore at Georgia. The duo was called into U.S. Soccer Under-23 camps during the off-season. Pelayo was an SEC All-Freshman selection in 2015. She was fourth among the 2016 Gators with 17 points (4 goals, 9 assists). Pelayo was part of the U.S. U-23 roster for the 2017 Open Nordic Tournament held in Sweden in late spring.

Florida-Florida State Match Rescheduled The Fresh from Florida Sunshine Showdown Florida versus Florida State soccer match is back on, thanks to assists from members of each team’s conference. The new date is Thursday, Oct. 12. Match time is set for 6 p.m. at the James G. Pressly Stadium. The match couldn’t be held on the original date, Friday, Sept. 8, due to the approach of Hurricane Irma. To keep the Florida-Florida State soccer match from being canceled for the second consecutive year due to a hurricane took some help from upcoming opponents for both teams. Auburn agreed to move its Friday, Oct. 13 home date with Florida to Sunday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. ET. Wake Forest pushed its home match with Florida State ahead a day to Oct. 15. “We didn’t want a hurricane to cancel the Florida-Florida State match again this year,” UF Head Coach Becky Burleigh said. “Thanks to Auburn and Wake Forest for agreeing to accommodate this change. UF and FSU want to keep this traditional matchup going and this year’s meeting wouldn’t be possible without the help of those opponents.”

Change in Schedule The schedule announced preseason doesn’t always happen due to various circumstances. Many Gator soccer matches have been delayed over the years due to weather or some other instance, but just a handful have been rescheduled or canceled. Burleigh Career Wins Total Among Nation’s Best Becky Burleigh stands among the nation’s top three active coaches for wins and winning percentage. She entered the 2017 season with a 27-year record of 472-126-38 (0.772). She stands at No. 3 in both wins (472) and winning percentage (0.772) among the NCAA Division I Active Coaches. She is one of two women in the top 10 on either chart.

Seiler Again on MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List For the second consecutive year, Gabby Seiler appears on the Preseason Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Watch List. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners are announced Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at the trophy presentation banquet held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Seiler entered Florida’s preseason training after attending the July 21-28 U.S. Under-23 National Team training camp in Seattle, Wash. It was the third U-23 camp for Seiler since January. Seiler made her Gator debut in the 2016 season, as she played at Georgia in 2013 and 2014. She sat out the 2015 campaign due to Southeastern Conference transfer rules. With the Gators in 2016, Seiler was a first-team selection for both National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Region and All-SEC teams. The versatile player who can play midfield, center or outside back started every match in 2016.

Seiler Scores in Four Consecutive Matches A Gator has scored in four or more consecutive matches 31 times in Florida’s 23-year history. The most recent addition is redshirt senior Gabby Seiler, who has scored in each of Florida’s four matches of the season. The Gators were shutout in their fifth match (1-0 loss at Washington) but Seiler returned to her scoring ways in the 1-0 win versus Portland. A Gator has scored in four or more consecutive matches now nine times since 2010 (Savannah Jordan – six consecutive matches in 2013, five in both 2014 and 2015 four in 2015; McKenzie Barney – five in 2010; Annie Speese – four in 2014; Erika Tymrak – four in 2011 and 2012). In the program's 23-year history, 13 Gators have scored in four or more consecutive matches 31 times. Of the 13 different players to score in four or more consecutive matches, Seiler is the only one who has started each of her scoring matches as a defender. Smart Gators The University of Florida soccer program posted a 3.32 grade point average in the fall of 2016 and a 3.26 in the spring of 2017. Florida set the league record with 24 earning a spot on the 2016 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Graduate School Gators Two Gators missed the morning session of pre-season two-a-days on Aug. 5. But they had a good excuse. Kristen Cardano and Gabby Seiler were in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, participating in the University of Florida’s summer commencement ceremony to receive their bachelor’s degrees.

2017 Gator Schedule Florida schedule again looks to be among the nation’s most challenging. In 2016, Florida finished No. 7 in final NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI). UF turned in a record of 7-5-1 versus teams advancing to the 2016 NCAA Championship. It was Florida’s third consecutive season placing among the final top 10 in RPI (No. 8 in 2015, No. 7 in 2014). Six teams among the Gators’ 2017 19-match schedule advanced to 2016 NCAA play.

Playing at Dizney Stadium during the regular season gives Florida venue options if the Gators are fortunate to be in position to host post-season action. A team needs to play at least two matches at a venue to have that site eligible for post-season play.

Wearing their Heart on their Sleeve On the right sleeve of Florida’s uniform is a patch with the letters “R&N”. Those initials are to honor Ron and Nancy Burleigh, the parents of Coach Becky Burleigh. Both passed away this year (Ron in February and Nancy in July).

The Gator senior class approached the University Athletic Association about honoring the Burleighs, who have attended many soccer matches to cheer on the Gators. Permission came from the Southeastern Conference and then the UAA Equipment room went to work to get the patches designed and stitched to the uniforms. The Aug. 20 match versus Troy was the debut of the patches. The team revealed the patch to Burleigh at the team’s pre-match team meal.

No. 7 Florida 1 Florida Atlantic 0 OT Aug. 18, 2017 FAU Stadium Boca Raton, Fla. BOCA RATON, Fla. – Ninety minutes was not enough for Florida soccer's season opening match. Extra minutes were needed for the Gator soccer season opener as Florida took a 1-0 overtime win at Florida Atlantic Friday evening at the FAU Stadium. Florida celebrates Gabby Seiler's successful penalty kick which gave Florida a 1-0 OT win at Florida Atlantic to open the 2017 season.The Gators outshot the Owls 14-2, but it wasn't until midway through the first overtime Florida got one past FAU goalkeeper Jennifer Ocampo. Freshman Deanne Rose was fouled in the box, awarding the Gators a penalty kick. Redshirt senior Gabby Seiler, who was just named Gator team captain at the pre-match meal, stepped up to take the kick. That shot provided Florida with the golden goal winner. Worth Noting Gabby Seiler's goal was her second as a Gator and the 12th of her collegiate career. She played for

Georgia as a freshman and sophomore and sat out the 2015 season due to Southeastern Conference transfer rules.

This was Florida's second appearance in Boca Raton in the six all-time meetings between the two programs. Florida also took an overtime win in that match, as future All-American and then freshman Tahnai Annis scored her first collegiate goal to give UF a 2-1 OT win on Aug. 24, 2008.

Gator goalkeeper Susi Espinoza made her first collegiate appearance Friday. She did not appear in a match as a freshman in 2016. Kaylan Marckese, who played every minute of the 2016 season, missed Friday's opener due to a hand injury.

In addition to Espinoza, four others made their first start for the Gators Friday – including true freshmen Madison Alexander and Deanne Rose. At least one Gator freshman has started 18 of the program's 23 season openers. Also among the starting Gators are two other newcomers. Parker Roberts transferred after playing at Kansas as a freshman in 2015, but sat out the 2016 collegiate season due to her U.S. Under-20 National Team commitment for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Luís Araujo played at ASA Junior College in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2014 and 2015 and sat out the 2016 collegiate season as she was captain of Brazil's U-20 World Cup team.

Florida is now 17-4-2 all-time in season opening matches. This is the fifth consecutive season-opening win for UF.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gator soccer got 2017-18 Florida athletics home action off to a positive start Sunday with a 5-0 win over Troy at the James G. Pressly Stadium. Five different Gators scored Sunday’s goals. Florida is now 20-2-1 all-time in home openers. Goal one for the Gators came early in the opening half. The play started deep the Florida half when Kristen Cardano’s pass found Sammie Betters open just beyond the midway point. Betters’ pass to just above the box bounced forward for freshman Deanne Rose. She caught up to the ball to send a chip past the oncoming goalkeeper in the 11th minute. Senior Gabby Seiler scored her second goal of the weekend off a corner kick at 27:48. The ball sent by Briana Solis was headed across the goal by Tess Sapone where Seiler volleyed it in from 10 yards. It was the perfect birthday present for junior Brittney Bennett. The ball popped out to the top of the box off a Troy clearance attempt. Bennett’s hard right-footed shot scored at the top corner at 35:05. Florida scored quickly to start the second half off another Solis corner kick. Parker Roberts shouldered the ball down to bounce across the line at 46:49. A penalty kick in the 86th minute by sophomore Tess Sapone was successful, giving Florida the final score. Worth Noting

Four different players scored their first Gator goal Sunday. Rose (10:29), Bennett (35:05), Roberts (46:49) and Sapone (85:24).

Sunday’s goal was the fourth of Roberts’ collegiate career and first as a Gator. Roberts scored three goals as a freshman at Kansas in 2015 before transferring to Florida in the summer of 2016. She sat out the 2016 collegiate season due to her commitment to the U.S. Under-20 National Team for the FIFA U-20 World Cup (played November-December 2016 in Papua New Guinea).

Bennett’s goal came on her 20th birthday. Gabby Seiler’s goal was her third as a Gator and her second of the weekend. Her penalty kick

in the 96th minute Friday gave Florida a 1-0 season-opening win at Florida Atlantic. It was the 13th goal of her collegiate career. She played for Georgia as a freshman and sophomore and sat out the 2015 season due to Southeastern Conference transfer rules.

Solis doubled her career total Sunday with her pair of corner kick assists. Rose was impressive in her opening weekend. She was the player fouled to give Florida the

penalty kick, which Seiler converted for a 1-0 overtime win Friday at Florida Atlantic. Sunday, she got the Gator scoring started early in the opening half. She and Seiler led the Gators with four shots each Sunday.

Dizney Stadium started the Florida Athletics Big Friday off right. Florida soccer was the first of two Gator programs to face the nation’s top-ranked team tonight in Gainesville, as volleyball meets No. 1 Texas in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. What Led to the Win: For the first 82 minutes, the Gators were either trailing or tied with the top-ranked Stanford soccer team. That changed in the 82nd minute. Laís Araujo followed the ball sent down the center of the box by Melanie Monteagudo. She held off her defender as the two challenged for possession. Araujo took a touch right to make a bit of space and then banged in a right-footed six-yard shot off the post and into the goal. The Gators led 3-2 with eight minutes left. The Cardinal pushed play into the Florida half for much of those final eight minutes Goalkeeper Susi Espinoza made the stop on Stanford’s Catarina Macario’s shot in the 90th minute for the final play of the match. And that registered Florida’s first win in six tries versus the traditional soccer power. Florida twice tied the match. Stanford took the lead in the 25th minute when Macario volleyed in the deflection of Tierna Davidson’s shot. Junior Samantha Chung sent Florida to halftime with a 1-all tie. Freshman Madison Alexander’s pass from the middle of the box found Chung alone just above the center of the box. Her right-footed shot scored at the far post. Stanford regained the lead in the 59th minute when Beattie Goad took the endline pass from Jaye Boissiere and scored at the near post from six yards. Florida again tied the match when Gabby Seiler headed in Mayra Pelayo’s cross. Her three-yard score at the far post tied the match at 78:32. Worth Noting

Araujo’s goal was her first of her Gator career. The junior transfer is one of three on Florida’s 2017 team who played at the 2016 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, as Araujo was captain of the Brazil side.

Chung is making a successful return from the injury that ended her 2016 season as she scored the second goal of her Gator career and first of 2017. Chung suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear in 2016 post-season action.

Monteagudo made her first appearance of 2017 today. Florida’s top returning scorer from 2016, Monteagudo sat out the season opening weekend of action with a calf injury. She played 29 minutes today and registered the assist on Araujo’s game-winning goal.

Seiler’s scored in each of Florida’s three matches this season to give her four goals in her Gator career. She scored 10 goals while playing with Georgia in 2013 and 2014 (redshirting 2015 season due to Southeastern Conference transfer rules).

Espinoza turned in a career-high five saves in goal tonight. She has played the entirety of each of Florida’s three matches this season – the first collegiate action of her Gator career.

Florida is now 2-1-1 all-time when facing the nation’s No. 1 team in Gainesville. The other win was also by a 3-2 score when UF defeated Florida State Aug. 30, 2015.

This was Florida’s first win versus Stanford in the six-match series. Of the five previous meetings, four went to overtime. The Cardinal now lead the all-time series 4-1-1.

How the Goals Were Scored: Florida scored its earliest goal of the season in the eighth minute. Syracuse’s Shannon Aviza was whistled for a handball on a Melanie Monteagudo shot deep in the SU box. Gabby Seiler successfully converted the penalty kick to give Florida the early lead. Syracuse tied the match in the 24th minute when Alana O’Neill took the ball end line. Her pass to the top of the six-yard box was one-touched in by Sydney Brackett. Briana Solis registered her third assist of the season in the 57th minute. She received the ball at the top corner of the box from Sarah Troccoli and then took a couple of touches while she explored her options. Seiler brings the number of times a Gator has scored in a goal in four or more consecutive matches to 31. She’s scored in each of Florida’s four matches this season. Shannon Simon’s 15-yard shot curled under the crossbar to score at 1:30. It was the earliest goal scored on the Gators since Mississippi State’s Shannen Jainudeen scored at 1:17 in a 5-1 Florida home win on Oct. 10, 2014. The play started when Lais Araujo sent the ball to Deanne Rose, standing back to goal above the box. Araujo continued her run, receiving the square ball back from Rose. The right-footed cross from Araujo found Seiler at the top of the six-yard box. Seiler one-touched the ball into the far corner for her fifth goal in the team’s six matches. One of the best opportunities for the Pilots came in the 62nd minute, when Ellie Walker tried to put in the cross from six yards, but Susi Espinoza got quickly into position to make the stop. GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An early goal was all Gator soccer needed Thursday to open Southeastern Conference play with a 1-0 win over previously unbeaten Mississippi. Thursday’s match at the James G. Pressly Stadium was the first Gator athletics event since Hurricane Irma forced the cancellation or postponement of all scheduled events. How the Goal Was Scored: A duo of juniors paired to give the Gators their earliest goal of the season in the fifth minute. Melanie Monteagudo received a throw-in from Gabby Seiler and took a couple of touches to create space on the far side of the box. The cross she placed into the box bounced between the Rebel defenders. Mayra Pelayo used her left foot to sweep the ball in at the far post from nine yards. That goal stood for the next 85 minutes. The Gators outshot the nation’s leading goal scoring team 10-4. Thursday’s match was the first action for junior goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese. She was sidelined for the first six matches with a hand injury. Marckese turned in two saves Thursday while collecting her 15th career solo shutout. The Rebels’ final recorded shot came in the 82nd minute, a hard strike from the top of the box by junior Cece Kizer.
