Coaching Obligations

Important Notice to all Volleyball Athletic Directors and Coaches: It is possible you have coaches who have obligations to complete prior to Friday in order to be involved with your school's volleyball team should it qualify for the state finals this weekend. These obligations would include meeting the IHSA Coaching Certification Standards, completing the Performance Enhancing Substance exam, and the Concussion exam. If you have any questions, please contact the IHSA office. Our office for years has consistently supported officials who have properly enforced NFHS rules as it relates to bench/player behavior and will continue to do so. However, we continue to see examples in games across the state where too many players and coaches act unsportsmanlike and respond disrespectfully to contest officials. This has to stop. You are reminded that it is our expectation that coaches and players who display unsporting behaviors are to be penalized by contest officials in accordance with NFHS rules. Unsporting behaviors would include, but not be limited to, acts of a flagrant nature, taunting, or being out of the coach’s box. We have reminded our officials of this expectation, and we hope you inform your coach and players of this as well. As school administrators, it is our hope that you are setting clear behavioral expectations for your coaches and players and holding them accountable when they fall short of those. While we do not anticipate any problems and look forward to working with your school should they advance to the state finals on Friday, we wanted you to know our expectations for the week ahead, and we will be expecting your assistance in helping all of us meet those. Interview Procedures The head coach and players from both teams have an obligation to "meet the press" in the Press Interview Room following each match. It is expected that even if a team loses a match, the head coach and players from that team will participate in the interviews at the scheduled time. The team host will escort the head coach and players from each team to the Press Interview Room at the appropriate time. The winning team’s head coach and players will meet the press first. This formal session will last approximately ten (10) minutes. The losing team will be escorted to the locker room by the Team Host for a “cooling down” time and then to the press room. Coaches are advised that news media representatives may want a one-on-one interview with them and/or specific players following the formal press conferences.

Exiting Locker Room Team locker rooms will be used by other teams and we ask that teams leave the locker room as quickly as they can following their match. As guest of Hoffman Estate High School, we ask coaches to make sure the locker rooms are straightened up before leaving the locker room.

Congratulations on your school’s qualification for the boy’s volleyball state finals, which will be held this weekend. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and one of which your school should be proud. Please note that, in accordance with the policy adopted by the IHSA Board of Directors, performance-enhancing drug testing may take place at the state finals this weekend. Any student-athlete who competes this weekend is eligible for testing. When testing occurs during any IHSA state series competition, schools will need to provide assistance to IHSA and Drug-Free Sport staff and ensure that any student(s) from your school selected for testing reports to the test site by established time. Additional notification regarding testing will be provided to those schools that have student-athletes selected for testing. School officials and coaches are encouraged to keep that notification confidential and not inform those selected student-athletes prior to their competition in the state finals. As a reminder, selected individuals who fail to report for post-competition testing will be found to have violated the IHSA’s Performance-Enhancing Drug Testing Policy and be subject to the appropriate penalties.

SPORTSMANSHIP AND SAFETY PROVISIONS AT THE IHSA BOYS VOLLEYBALL STATE FINALS

Healthy Volleyball Environment The IHSA serves member schools by providing leadership for equitable participation in interscholastic activities that enrich the educational experience. School administrators, coaches, officials, fans, HEHS and the IHSA share a very important responsibility to the student-athletes that are participating in the state finals matches, to provide equipment, facilities and an environment that is as free of risk as possible. The concern for the health of our high school volleyball players participating in the state tournament is primary. Security personnel have been instructed to monitor the participants and react quickly and reasonably when conduct becomes negative and drops below the level of expected behavior.

IHSA Event Security Policy To help insure the safest and most secure atmosphere for this IHSA State Final, event management at HEHS will diligently maintain the above standards. This will require complete cooperation by all competing teams, contest officials and fans. Security will always have priority over convenience; therefore, if you are requested to cooperate with event personnel in any manner, please do so promptly. Your assistance will enable our staff to fulfill its responsibility efficiently.

Persons and Possessions Subject to Search Please note that all persons and their possessions are subject to search upon entering any IHSA State event venue. Items prohibited under this policy or any item deemed by the IHSA or HEHS staff to be dangerous or harmful to persons or property will be confiscated. Patrons of any IHSA state series contest who do not cooperate with event staff in their enforcement of this policy will be removed from the premises and law enforcement officials will be called as warranted. No ticket refunds will be granted in such cases. Police at the entrances may be doing visual checks of oversized purses, jackets, camera cases and the like. We ask everyone’s cooperation in this process.

Alcohol and Illegal Substances Prohibited The possession, distribution, sale, and or consumption of alcoholic beverages and illegal substances are prohibited on the property of any IHSA state series contest facility. State series hosts are required to make all state series contest sites, including the parking lots, fan accommodation areas, and other school or event venue property, alcohol and illegal substance free zones on the date or dates of any IHSA event being held at the site. Event personnel will enforce this policy rigorously.

Position Statement

Any act dangerous to others, is an unsafe behavior, incites participants or spectators to violent or abusive action, exhibits obscene gestures, or yells profanity and/or provocative type language toward an official, student-athlete, coach, spectator, bench and/or score table personnel is unacceptable.

STUDENT MEDIA CREDENTIALS FOR PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS Congratulations on qualifying for an IHSA state final in a team sport. In order to provide the best possible coverage of this event for your school newspaper, yearbook and AV club, etc. you are entitled to have up to three students receive credentials to cover this event as official media members. In the event that you have less than three students, an adult sponsor may be included on this list. To apply for student media credentials, please have your Athletic Director or an individual involved with the aforementioned programs email Matt Troha ([email protected]) at the IHSA with the following information:

1) The names of individuals attending 2) Whether they are students or adults 3) If the attending individuals will serve as reporters, photographers, videographers, etc.

Student media who are registering for credentials are expected to maintain a level of professionalism while covering this event. That includes no cheering while in the press box or game coverage area. Proper attire is also required. Wearing school shirts and colors is acceptable, but students wearing face paint, costumes, carrying props, etc. will be required to change before receiving credential clearance. The individual applying for student media credentials will receive specific information on credential pick-up and media regulations at the event via email in the days leading up to the state final. Please note that student media credentials are only available for state final events in team sports. Due to the sheer volume of schools who qualify in individual sports, our press facilities would be unable to accommodate student media from all participating schools in individual sports. Student media are also welcome to cover IHSA state final activities. Credentials are not required for these events, but please have your students check-in with state final personnel upon arrival for media coverage regulations.

VIDEO TAPING STATE FINALS FOR COACH FILM BREAKDOWN Each school will be eligible to receive a pass for an individual attending the state final event to shoot game film that is for the sole purpose of being used by the coaching staff for postgame breakdown. Passes for videographers shooting highlight videos, documentaries, etc. should be included in student media application reference above. Additional passes for videotaping purposes will need to come from the allotment of state final passes given to school/head coach at or prior to the state final event.

To apply for a credential to shoot video, please have your Athletic Director email Matt Troha ([email protected]) at the IHSA with the name of the individual who will be taping and whether they are an adult or a student.

Please contact Matt Troha (309-663-6377) at the IHSA for any questions related to this document.
