Lead Team By NEIL KERR The Post-Standard

Paced by defending New York state champion Seanws Lyman of Watertown and returning place· winner Chad Sheldon of Fulton, the gold-uniformed Section Three wrestling team will begin its bid for State Wrestling Meet team honors today in the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Wrestling at the 28th annual State Intersectional Meet starts at 3:30 p.m. today' with two rounds of competition scheduled .. Semifi· nals resume at 10 a.m. Saturday, leading tQ t p.m. consolation bouts an~ 7:30 P·lll:.l!tle !Jlalch~.

New York state champion, has · already has more victories - 150

- than any other wrestler in Section Three history. He appears tough to beat at 167 pounds.

Sheldon, 32·1 this year and 102·7 for his career, also returns to the Intersectional Meet, having placed fifth at 119 a year ago. Now at 126 pounds, Sheldon is overshadowed at that weight by five-time state place-winner Troy Bouzakis, 33-0, 171·2, who's looking for his third straig!lt title. Sheldon is likely to confront Bouzakis in the quarterfinal round later tonight.

With Lyman, Sheldon and twotime 132-pound section champion Jeff LaFlamme, 35·1, of South Jefferson leading the way, the host Section Three team hopes to suc-. ceed perennial power Section Ele-

ven (Suffolk County, L.l.) as team champion.

Section Eleven has won five of the past seven team crowns, Section Three last won in 1978.

"This team has a good mixture of experience and tough young newcomers," said Fulton coach Mike Conners' as he supervised a Wednesday workout of the sectional team. "I know Section Eleven will be strong again, but we've got as a good a chance as any other team of winning. First place will probably be decided in the wrestlebacks. The wrestlers who get beat once, but battle their way back to get those third and fourth places are the guys who will determine the team champion.

"That's because a lot of seclions will earn one or two individual state titles, but I don't see any .. ·section having many individual. champions."

Three former state champions .. return to Syracuse to seek repeat nonors. Antnony AlDertt, a semor from Hendrick Hudson, looks solid at 91 pounds.

. Five-time state meet qualifier Troy Bouzakis of Pine Bush-9, sporting_a 171-2 career record, will seek a third state crown, this time at 126 pounds. Bouzakis, voted as the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" of the 1987 state finals, bas finished 1·1·3·2 in his previous treks to Syracuse.

Watertown's Lyman, 106·1-1 in his last 108 matches, hopes to equal the feats of his two uncles, Tom and Pete Capone, both of whom were two-time state cham· pions in the 1970s.

"It's. more difficult this year," said Lyman, a four-time Section Three champion and owner of a 150·15-2 career record. "Last year, I was wrestling to win. Now,

with all the added pressure of being a state champion, I sometimes wrestle not to lose, which is a bad habit to get into. I have to stay aggressive .. There are only four matches left in my high school career, and I don't want to lose any of them."

Seamus won't be the only Lyman seeking state honors this weekend. Paul Lyman, a year younger than Seamus, sports a 34-0 record as he tries to succeed his oltjer brother as state 155-pound champion. "I've always felt sort of left out," said a grinning Paul Lyman Wednesday. "When our whole family gets together for dinner, three people are state champions and I haven't won much of anything. This is my cliance to start catching up with my uncles and with Seamus."

Paul, not yet as slick and experienced as his older brother, nevertheless will be a serious contender for the !55-pound crown.

1:1es10es tne · Lyman nrotners, two other Section Three champions still boasting unbeaten records are 98-pound Terry Showalter, 3:1-0, of Whitesboro and 215-pound Percy Clarke, 36-0, of Marcellus. ShOwalter, an eighthgrader who was a sectional runner'UP last year, is 61-3 for his varsity career. If he remains healthy, Showalter is likely to threaten the existing state careerwins record of 188, set by 155· pound state runner-up J.J. Stanbro of Johnson City last year.

Besides Watertown, both Fowler and Indian River accounted for two individual champions on the Section Three team.

Fowler, coached by Rick Spicer, qualified Empire State Games' gold medalist Rick Jamison, 33-1, at 105 pounds and Kareeb

Howard, 34·1, at 138 for the state meet. Both are juniors.

"I'm extremely proud of these two kids," said Spicer, "and I think both are capable of surprising their opponents. These two guys aren't well-known, but they're both strong and determined. Fowler has only had two former sectional champions (Gary Cole· man, fourth at 98 in 1979, and Stan Williams, fifth at 215 in 1983). My two guys are aiming to do better than they did."

Howard, who defeated defending sectional champion Mike Clay· ton of Baldwinsville to reach the state meet, is also an exceptional gymnast. He placed fifth in the long horse vault at the State Intersectional gymnastics 01eet on Long Island last Nov~mber. "My goal in athletics was to qualify for two state meets. in gymnastics and wrestling, as a senior," said Howard. "So, rm already a year ahead nf schedule."

indian K1ver's two sectional champioas are the injury-slowed Chris Lynch at 119 pounds and Jamie Call at 250. Lynch, sporting a 109·17 career record. suffered a knee injury during his Section Three title bout win, but is hopeful the knee responds to treatment permitting him to compete.

On the Section Three squad, six champions are from the Frontier League, including two apiece from Watertown and Indian River. The others are 145-pound Brian Buckingham of Beaver River and South Jefferson's LaFlamme, who failed to place at 132 last year but should do better this weekend.

The once-powerful Onondaga League North qualified only one athlete in 177 -pound Todd Webb of Baldwinsville for state competi· lion.

Section 3 Makes Strong Showing Roggie of Beaver River r-. • v ourpnses 1' oe

By NEIL KERR The Post-Standard

·Awarded a free pass into the 28th annual New York State Intersectional wrestling tournament because of an injury to a close friend, Bryan Roggie, a junior from Beaver River competing at 119 pounds, made the most of his opportunity Friday night.

Roggie, who had placed second to longtime friend Chris Lynch of Indian River at the Section Three finals, took Lynch's place in the State Meet due to the latter's knee injury. Roggie responded with a pin in 5 minutes over Section Five champion Gary DeCarr of North Rose-Wolcott. Thus, Roggie -who had received a bye through Friday's preliminary round -finds himself in the semifinals of the New York State tournament today at the Onondaga County War Memorial.

Wrestling begins with 10 a.m. semifinals, leading to 7:30 p.m. title matches.

Section Three made a strong showing opening day, scoring 68 points and moving into second place in the team scoring race behind Section Five of the Rochester area, which has 76.5 points. Following Section Three is Section Four (Southern Tier) with 66, Section One (Westchester area) with 61.5, Section Eight (Nassau County) with 60, and defending champion Section Eleven (Suffolk J:;ounty) with 48.

:. Last weekend Roggie thought his season was over.

' . "This is all a little hard to believe," admitted Roggie, now ;12-2. "Chris had beaten me twice

this winter for my only two losses. On Monday night, he called me after be re-injured bis knee in a workout that aft~rnoon cHid told me be might not be able to compete. Chris said I should keep my weight down and be ready to com~toe !n ~::!s~ h!~ k!!ee dld!!.'t ~~~~ around by the end of the week.

"He called me again Thursday afternoon and told me he couldn't make it. I told him I- felt bad for him. We've been friends for a long time - we went to the Empire State games and to the nationals in Iowa together last summer. I told him that I would be wrestling for me and him."

Roggie, whose older brother, Shawn, took part in two past State Tournaments, faces Section Four champion Shawn Welch, 38-2, of Waverly.

Roggie was among seven Section Three representatives to advance.

They were led by defending 155· pound state champion Seamus Lyman of Watertown, who won both his 167-pound bouts.

Of the seven, Lyman. 98-pound Terry Showalter of Whitesboro and 215-pound Percy Clarke of Marcellus are the only three remaining unbeaten wrestlers in Section Three.

Lyman defeated Section Six champion Gary Chase of Ton· awanda 5·0, then pinned Section Ten champion Tom Soto of Gouverneur in 1:58. Seamus now has 152 victories in Section Three. He's 152·15-2 for four seasons.

Showalter, an eighth-grader with a 62-3 career record and a 34-0 record this season, posted a stunning 6-2 victory over Mike Buonagurio of Connetquot-11. Showalter, who will face Section Eight champion Craig Vitagliano of Plainedge in his semifinal, may well become the winningest w res· tier in Empire State history if he stays healthy. The state mark is 188 se! last March by !55-pound

runner-up J.J. Stanbro of Johnson City.

Clarke. 37·0. won his onlv match 12-5 over Section Seven champion Francis Brousseau of Peru. Clarke will oppose folll'-time State Meet qualifier Mike Bucci of Red Hook in the semifinals. Bucc• had placed sixth, sixth, and third, all at 177 pounds, in his three previous State Meet appearances.

Section Three's other semifinal· ists are South Jefferson's two-time 132-pound champion, Jeff Lanamme, Baldwinsville 177-pounder Todd Webb, and Indian Ri;2r's Jamie Call, competing at 250.

Of tlie three, Call continues to be a success story. With five regular-season losses at heavyweight, the junior wasn't even seeded among the top five athletes for the Section Three tournament. Call weighs only 215 pounds. Nevertheless, Call not only took Section Three honors with a series of upsets last week, he pinned two sectional champions Friday - Bill Tooley of Scotia-2 in 1:21 of the first period, and Troy Marshall of Malone Franklin-10 in 3:19 of the second period.

Call will meet Section Four champion Bruce Manley of Ithaca in the semifinals.

Baldwinsville's Webb, 33-1 with his only to loss of the year to Lyman, posted a 10-3 victory over Section Four champion Mike Ellerson of Whitney Point.

LaFlamme had a rugged onepoint scrap with another returning State Meet veteran, Section One champion Jim Rial of Peekskill, in his matchup. LaFlamme needed a late escape for a 3-2 win.

LaFlamme will meet class favorite Section Six champion Tom Shifflet of Sweet Home today.

Besides Lyman, two other lormer state champions reached the semis. Defending 91-pound cham· pion Anthony Alberti of Hendrick

Hudson-! won his opening two bouts in routine fashion and will face Section Eight champion James Douglas of Bethpage.

Troy Bouzakis of Pine Bush, the five-time state placewinner who had placed 1-1·3-2 in previous treks to Syracuse, improved his record to 172-2 - but his win was hardly routine. Facing Section Three's Chad Sheldon of Fulton, Bouzakis built a 7-0 lead after two periods. Sheldon then staged a superb rally, with a reversal, near fall and penalty point, to close within 7-6. That, however, proved to be the final score, sending a gritty Sheldon into the wrestle· back round.

Besides Sheldon, six other members of the Section Three team were sent to the wrestle-back bracket.

That corps includes junior Paul Lyman cf Watertown. The forII!l!rly-unbeaten Lyman, 34-0, dropped his opening bout, I 0·3 to Section Six champion Mike Luick of Niagara-Wheatfield, but bounced back for a victory in his opening wrestle-back Friday.

Also for Section Three: • Canastota 91-pounder John

Tyler won his first match, but lost by pin to Mike Merry of Umon· Endicott in the quarterfinals.

• Fowler's pair of Sectionai champions, 105-pound Mike Jamison and 138-pound Kareeb Howard, both went to the wrestlebacks also. Jamison lost his open· ing match 16·2 to David Hirsch of Clarkstown South. Howard, after an opening pin win over Section Ten charnpion Jason Crosby of Canton. lost to Chris Terrv of Whi-

tehallll-6. Terry brought a record of 170-27 to Syracuse, his· victory· total second this weekend only to Bouzakis of Pine Bush-9 among 1990 competitors. ·

"He was awfully strong," said .Howard afterward. "I just got too

far behind (seven points) in the first period. "By the time I started wrestling smart, it was too late."

• Section Three 145-pound champion Brian Buckingham of Beaver River dropped an opening. bout 9-4 to Guy Peryea of Beek·, mantown.

8 Mohawk Central's 112-pound champion, Stan Dawley, posted !I 5·3 win over Section Eleven champion Chris Conway, then dropped a 12·7 battle to Section Five cham-. pion Brvant Ranger of Midlakes.

HEMPSTEAD'S CALVIN WHITFIELD tries to yank down Ravena's Bob Pelletier in their match at 105 pounds.

Call leads seven from area into semis • VIRE'iTLING Continued from Page Bl

Lynch and Roggie stood together Friday at the meet, Lynch on a pair of crutches, Reggie beside him, relaxed, but with a look of remorse on his face for having to wrestle ill his friend's place.

"Chris called me Monday and told me about the knee," said Roggie. The call gave Reggie time to prepare for this weekend's action, but it wasn't like Reggie wanted it to be.

"He (RGggie) would rather have Chris wrestling," said Call. "Bryan feels like the injury is his fault. since it happened when Chris was wrestling him. Plus, this is Chris' last year. Bryan's only a jUJlior, and he's got next year."

Reggie wrestled as if he was on a mission for his weight mate, pinning Gary DeCarr from North Rose Wolcott (Five) in 5:00 to advance to the semifinals, where he meets Shawn Welch from Waverly (Four).

Eighth-grader Terry Showalter from Whitesboro made the semifinal round for the 98-

. pound class, squeezing a victory out of Connetquot (11) wrestler Michael Buonagurio, 6-2. Showalter controlled the match throughout, and raised his record to 33-0 for the season going inbJ his semifmal match today against Craig Vitagliano from Plainedge (8).

Two other Section Three wrestlers kept their perfect seasons in tact Friday, as 215-pound Percy Clarke from Marcellus and Seamus Lyman, the 167-pound dynamo from

Watertown, kept their marks clean. But Clarke faces tough Mike Bucci from Redhook (9) in the semifinals, and Lyman must get past Jason Bovenzi of Greece-Athena (5) to try for his second state title in as many years.

Clarke, now 36-0, drew a frrst-round bye, then handled. Francis Brousseau of Peru (Seven) in the quarterfinal match, 12-5 .. Brousseau gave_ Clarke a challenge until the third period, which began with Clarke leading, 7-5. Then Clarke's conditioning and experience took over as he shut out Brousseau, 5-0, in the final stanza.

It took Lyman (34-0l three periods to score five points en route to his first round decision over Gary Chase of Tonawanda (Six), 5-0. In the quarterfinal, however, Lyman wrestled Tom Soto from Gouverneur (10) and pinned him in 1:58.

Lyman's brother, Paul, didn't fare a:s well as his elder sibling. Paul seemed to have taken up where Seamus left off last year, when Seamus won his first-state title at !55-pounds. .

Watertown coach Herb Van Houten certainly pegged his .wrestler when he said, "Sometimes Paul comes to wrestle, and sometimes he doesn't"

Paul was 33-0 in the 155-pound class coming into Friday's action, but lost in the first round, 10-3; to Mike Luick of. Niagara-Wheatfield (6). ·

Kareeb Howard picked up a pair of team points for Section Three when he tore apart Jason Crosby from Canton OOl. pining him in

3:13. Then Howard met Christopher Terry from Whitehall (2), and things changed.

"He was really strong," said Howard of Terry, who manhandled the Section Three champion, 11-6.

Terry led, 11-2, going into the the third period. Howard began to assert himself in the Er.al st.a!!Za. b:~t a gash en Terrj·"s forebead acquired early in the match re-opened whenever Howard had the chance to gain the advantage.

"I got frustrated toward the end," said an exasperated Howard after the match, which was stopRed three times in the final two minutes. 'Every time I tried something, we st'!Pped."

Equally flustered was Fulton 126-pounder Chad Sheldon, who wrestled in two of the best matches of the evening.

In his first round match, Sheldon trailed Steve Felt of Salamanca (6), 6-7, going into the third period. He fought back and tied Felt, 10-10, then dominated the exhausted Fellin the overtime periods to win, 19-12.

Sheldon again took a deficit into the final period of his quarterfinal as Troy Bouzakis from Pine Bush (Nine) shut him out for four minutes, 7.{). •

But Sheldon came from behind again, scoring six third-period points before losing, 7-6, with Bouzakis on his hack. ·

.Todd Webb completed Section Three's bid for a .state title, dra"ing a bye in the first round and walking through his quarterfinal match against Mike Ellerson of Whitney Point (Four) and winning, 10-3.

Section 3 wrestlers take a fall By Marms Hayes Contnbuting Writer

Things looked good for Section Three going into Saturday's state tournament at the Onondaga War Memonal. Seven wrestlers from the section had qualified for the Saturday morning semifinal matches and Section Three trailed Section Five in the race for the team title. 76.5-68.

Then the sky fell in on Section Three's hopes for a team title. Only two wrestlers advanced to Saturday night's final round, Watertown grappler Seamus Lyman and !Ja!dw:;~"'~!!e's Todd Webb.

At the end of the semifinal round, Section T"nree fell to sixth place with rn points. Section Five, with 129 points, and Section One, with 127 points, prepared to fight it out for the team championship, as each team placed four wrestlers in the finals.

In fact. Section Three was nearly shut out of the final round. Lyman beat Jason Bovenzi of Greece-Athena (Section Five) by only one point. 4-3, in the 167-pound class. Lyman led, 2-1. going into the third period. and reversed on Bovenzi to widen the margin to 4-l.

"It's all over now," said a dejected Call, the victim of Manley's superior weight "He just laid on me; he didn't wrestle.

"I'll take third. I guess, and there's always next year," added the junior.

There's no next year for Jeff LaFlamme, a senior 119-pounder from South Jefferson, and there will be no state title for him this year.

LaFlamme lost his semifinal match, 5-2, to Tom Shifflet from Sweet Home (Six). Shifflet. consid-' ered by many as the best in the state in the 119-pound class, should go _all the way, according to LaFlamme.

"He'll win it," said a smiling LaFlamme after their match. .,He does a lot of things I like to do, like arm-drags and ankle-picks. But he's stronger than me, so his moves worked, and mine didn't."

All of 98-pound Terry Showalter's moves worked in his semifinal bout with Craig Vitagliano of Plainedge (Eight), until the last few seconds.

Showalter, an eighth-grader from Whitesboro, led throughout the match and was ahead, 3-2, when Vitagliano reversed on hini with Z1 seconds left in regulation; The .move gave Vitagliano two points and the match, ~-

The end was quicker but equally as disappointing for Bryan Roggie of Beaver River. Roggie, a lastc minute replacement for Section Three ll!).:pound champion Chris Lynch, was cradled and pinned in 1:55 by Shawn Welch of Waverly (Four) in that semifinal match.

Baldwinsville's Webb Only Section Three Champion·? By NEIL KERR

Tht.> Post·Stomd;ml

As he watched his Section .Three teammates suffer defeat, Baldwinsville's Baker High School senior Todd Webb knew what he had to do. "All the guys that were losing were being tentative," said Webb late Saturday night at the Onondaga County War Memorial. "I deciijed on Friday, after my first match, that I was going to stay totally aggressive in every match. If I was going to lose, I was going to go down fighting."

With that strategy in mind, Webb didn't lose a bout at the 28th state Intersectional Meet. He soundly defeated finalist Steve Thompson of W2rd ~dviHe High in Suf. folk County 12-4 for the crown. The Bees' senior, finishing with 110 career wins, grabbed the early lead with an openingmit1ute takedow". ~nd never allowed Thompson to get the upper hand.

"I've worked for 12 months for this title," Webb told a crowd of well-wishers. "Ever since I lost the sectional title match to Dave Wise of Fulton last March, I had only one goal in mind - to win the state title this year."

Off-season wrestling, including a gold medal performance at the Empire State Games in Ithaca last summer, sharpened Webb's skills and increased his strength.

When he dropped a 2-1 bout to Watertown High's Seamus Lyman in December, it didn't deter Webb's drive. That loss only made him more determined. "I wasn't in top shape in December," admitted Webb, who passed up the chance to play on the (Section Three champion) Baldwinsville football team to concentrate on wrestlin~ nractice. "After that loss, I started getting real serious about getting my weight down and getting stronger. I worked all winter for this."

In the finals, Webb actually defeated a last-minute tourney replacement. Thompson bad been a one-point loser to Nick Hall of Longwood in the Section Eleven tourney, but Hall stayed borne to be with his mother, wbo is critically ill with cancer.

Webb's title helped Section Three to a fourth-place finish, with 157.5 points. The surprise team champion was unheralded Section Five (Rochester area), which scored 181.5 points. That area had only one returning· individUal placewinner from its 1989 lineup, 145-pound class fabvorite Steve Taylor of Brockport, and wasn't expected to make a strong showing. Section Five was led by Taylor, who won his class, and who was joined by 138-pound Ken Porter of Alfred-Almond plus 155-pound Brian Gray of Wellsville as iru:tivjdu~t ~hamp~c!\!.

Capturing the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" trophy for the second time in his career was a greatly-relieved Troy Bouzakis of Pine Bush, the pre-tourney favorite at 126 pounds. Surviving a 7-6 escape from Fulton's upset-minded Chad Sheldon in Friday's quarterfinals, Bouzakis went on to win his class with a firstperiod pin of Chad Groncki of Burnt Hills in the title bout.

Bouzakis had also taken tourney honors in 1986 and 1987 before placing third and then second the past two years at 119 pounds. "I was starting to think the 119-pound class was a jinx for me, so I decided to keep my weight up and stay at 126 instead of dropping to 119 for the third year in a row," explained Bouzakis as he clutched his "MOW" trophy Saturdav.

ilouzakis, finishing with a 175-2 career record, added, "I've had some personal problems the last two years which inter-

My brother was involved in a bad car accident three years ago which made him go through a lot of therapy, and there have been other personal problems. This winter, I just decided I wasn't going to return to Syracuse and get beat again. No way. I have to say that Sheldon gave me easi!y my toughest match of the year though. He's very good."

Fulton coach Mike Conners, who was

greatly disbearted last week when be learned Bouzakis was in the 126-pound class, had nothing but praise for the "MOW" recipient. "Bouzakis is a great high school wrestler, no question about it, but you saw the struggle he bad to get past Chad. After Chad lost that match, I think he lost something mentally. He was tvtall:,.- focused un beating Bou:Gakls, and when it didn't happen, his concentration was shot."

Sheldon ended up in sixth place in his

class, despite having given Bouzakis ~ : only serious scare of his senior sea~Q•: Bouzakis had also won the "MOW" trophy;· to climax the 1987 tournament. ·

Besides tbree-time champion Bouzakis, 91-pound favorite Anthony Alberti of Hendrick Hudson was a repeat winner,. taking that class a second straight year: :; :
