Did You Know? The Jackie Robinson film “42” opened in the-aters on April 12, and three former Bulldogs are in it. Outfielder Jasha Balcom (2003) is the stunt double for Chadwick Boseman who plays Jackie Rob-inson. Infielder David Thoms (2008-09) plays St. Louis Cardinal Enos Slaughter while pitcher Barry Fowler (1998-99) is an extra.

*Junior pitcher Dylan Cole (0-0, 3.07 ERA, 3 SV) is 3-for-4 in save opportunities since moving in to the closer role at the end of March. He earned his first save as a Bulldog in the 7-6 road win over #8 Kentucky on March 30. He went 2-for-3 in save chances during the first week of April, picking one up against Kennesaw State and Missouri. On April 7, he had his first blown save after coming in with the bases loaded, nobody out and a 2-0 count on the batter of a 5-4 game. Cole had 10 saves in a two-year career at Furman before transferring to UGA in 2012. Cole’s younger brother, Hunter, is a sophomore starting outfielder for the Bulldogs batting .288-3-25.

*Sophomore LHP Jarrett Brown (0-0, 2.18 ERA) leads the team with 19 relief appearances covering a span of 20.2 innings. Opponents are batting .208 against him.

*Redshirt freshman Mike Mancuso (0-1, 4.15 ERA) has seen more action of late. After pitching two scoreless innings against Furman on March 19, he did not pitch again until the Missouri series in April. In the Major Leagues, he would have received a “hold” for his two scoreless innings of work in the win over the Tigers on April 6. Since then, he has been called on three times and has been effective with a scoreless inning against #20 Ga. Tech on April 9, 2.1 scorelss innings against Auburn on April 13 and a scoreless inning against Presbyterian on April 16.

*Freshman RHP Sean McLaughlin (4-3, 3.21 ERA) notched his first career SEC win against Missouri on April 6. He had served as the Friday night starter all season until moving to Saturday for the Mizzou series. Junior LHP Patrick Boling (2-4, 3.64 ERA) switched to the Friday starter following his road victory over then #8 Kentucky on March 30. McLaughlin may see time in the outfield during the Vanderbilt series along with RHP/OF Heath Holder. Holder got a start against Auburn in LF and drew a pair of walks, scored two runs and went 0-1.

Stalwart Defenders On The Left Side Of The Infield The left side of the Bulldog infield features a pair of seniors in shortstop Kyle Farmer (196 starts) and third baseman Curt Powell (148 starts including 145 at 3B, 1-SS, 1-2B, 1-RF). In the 2013 Baseball America College Season Preview, Farmer was named the “Best Defensive SS” in the SEC while Powell was tabbed the “Best Defensive 3B.” Also in the publication’s National Top 50 Players by class, Farmer checked in at No. 19 among seniors while Powell was No. 23. Farmer already holds the single season record for Highest Fielding Percentage by a SS at .970, set last year in 266 total chances. In 2013, he may set a new season mark as he is currently at .974. Farmer and Powell helped Georgia set a school record with a .978 Fielding Percentage in 2012, breaking the mark of .974 by the 2011 squad that they were a part of too. In fact, the duo could finish their career with the best fielding perentages at their positions in school history.

Career Record For FLDG% By A SS: .951 by Justin Holmes, 2002-04 (169 PO, 332 A, 26 E)Kyle Farmer: Currently .967 (313 PO, 621 A, 32 E)

Career Record For FLDG% By A 3B: .938 by Lee Mitchell, 2001-03 (81 PO, 284 A, 24 E)Curt Powell: Currently .931 (92 PO, 299 A, 29 E); Does not include 2 PO & 3A @ 2B; 1 PO, 3A@SS; 2 PO @ OF

Farmer and Powell have been two of Georgia’s most productive players at the plate too. In 2012, Powell earned All-SEC second team honors after batting a team-high .355. This season, Farmer leads the team with 35 RBI while batting .297. Powell leads the club at .378-0-18. Powell, who has started 37 games at third this year, made a start at SS against Ga. State on Feb. 26 as Farmer rested a hamstring. Freshmen Jess Posey and J.T. Phillips handled third base duties that day. Posey and Phillips comprised the right side of the infield for a spell in April. Phillips, who likely will play SS next season, has done an excellent job in 32 games at first base, fielding a perfect 1.000 in 218 total chances. Posey is more of a third baseman who has been filling in for the injured Nelson Ward who could return full-time in the VU series.
