Students graduating with a scholarship index of 3.90 or higher will be graduated Summa Cum Laude; those with a scholarship index between 3.60 and 3.90 will be graduated Magna Cum Laude and those with a scholarship index between 3.30 and 3.60 will be graduated Cum Laude. These honors are recognized by the display of gold Honor Cords at the Commencement ceremonies and in appropriate fashion on the diplomas.

THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION

In today's academic procession, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university, although black is the basic color of the majority of academic gowns. The doctor's gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the degree was conferred.

RHIT Bachelor's Degree Attire

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Bachelor's degree holders or candidates wear a black gown and a black mortarboard with a black tassel.

RHIT Master's Degree Attire

Master's degree hoods for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology are black, lined with rose satin and white satin chevron and edged in golden yellow velvet. With the gown and hood is worn a black mortarboard with black tassel.

Honorary Degrees

Doctor of Engineering

A. NORMAN CRANIN

A native of Brooklyn, New York, A. Norman Cranin graduated from Swarthmore College with an A.B. degree in 1947 and from New York University College of Dentistry with a D .D.S. degree in 1951. He has done postgraduate work at the Mount Sinai Hospital and at the Institute for Graduate Dentists.

He currently is Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New York University College of Dentistry and Director of Dental and Oral Surgery at the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center.

Dr. Cranin has served on the editorial or executive boards of a number of technical societies, journals and books. He has contributed extensively to dental research and education. He has authored more than 80 papers and he is a listed inventor on two U.S. patents.

Among the organizations that have honored Dr. Cranin are the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the International College of Implantology, New York University, Clemson University, and the Brazilian Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

WILLIAM R. FENOGLIO

William R. Fenoglio is a native of Clinton, Indiana, and he grew up in Terre Haute. In 1961, he graduated from Rose Polytechnic Institute with honors and a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering.

After graduation he began a long and distinguished career with General Electric. He held positions in field sales, manufacturing and marketing. He advanced through various positions and became vice president and general manager of the Component Motor Division, a position he held from 1981 to 1984. This division consists of 28 operations world-wide and employs 14,000 people.

Mr. Fenoglio became president of the Barnes Group in 1985 . The Barnes Group is a Fortune 500 company consisting of three separate business groups: Bowman Distribution, Associated Spring and Aerospace Components. Bowman Distribution sells more than 18,000 different products to over 75,000 customers, mostly in the industrial, transportation, and heavy equipment maintenance markets. Associated Spring is one of the world's largest manufac­turers of precision springs and custom metal parts. Aerospace Components consists of four manufacturing and repair . operations serving the jet engine market.

HOWARD H. IRVIN

Howard H . Irvin graduated from Rose Polytechnic Institute with high honors in 1943. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Irvin's professional experience includes thirty-eight years with Borg-Warner Corporation, where he held several senior management positions. While at Borg-Warner, Mr. Irvin led the development effort which resulted in Borg-Warner Chemicals being the largest ABS polymer producer in the world. Since 1982, Mr. Irvin has been the President of Howard H . Irvin Associates, a world-wide business consulting firm serving multinational clients with business strategies and technology transfer. In addition, he is a director of lntercorp, Ltd., a London-based firm that emphasizes technical and business cooperation between businesses in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

Mr. Irvin belongs to the American Chemical Society, Society of Chemical Industry (London), Society of the Plastics Industry, the Licensing Executives Society, and the Harvard Business School Club of Chicago. He is a member of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Board of Managers.

JOHN D. WINTERS

John D . Winters started his career with Caterpillar, Inc., in 1949 after receiving a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Rose Polytechnic Institute.

Mr. Winters held a number of assignments in sales and he became a general supervisor in the Market Division in 1963. He served as manager of dealer sales at the Engine Division and in 1966 became the sales training manager in Caterpillar's General Offices.

In 1971, Mr. Winters became manager of the Sales Department. In 1974, he went to Brazil as vice president of Caterpillar Brasil S.A. and was named president there in 1975. He was appointed manager of Caterpillar's Aurora, Illinois, plant in 1979 and he has served as a vice president of the company since November 1983. He is responsible for the company's Engine Division.
