Lance Armstrong, General David Petraeus, Penn State, Bountygate, Linsansity, Miguel Cabrera, Usain Bolt, Andy Griffith, Sandy Hook Elementary School, Gangnam Style, and Honey Boo Boo. Those are some of the names and words that should conjure up memories of this past year, good and bad. Each year news programs, sports shows, radio stations, and other me- diums remind us all of ‘What A Year It Was.’ As we’re here this week to salute our 1987 Milwaukee Brewers, aka ‘Team Streak,’ let me take you on trip down memory lane back to 1987. In 1987, a US postage stamp cost 24 cents, a dozen eggs was 65 cents, a gal- lon of gas was 87 cents, and a pound of bacon set you back $1.80. The top sell- ing car was a Ford Escort with a price tag of $6,895, which is almost $2,500 less than what a Private 1st Class in the Army made: $9,385.20. The year-end close of the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 1,938, while the Federal Reserve Interest Rates ended the year at 8.75%. Jim Bakker resigned as host of the PTL due to an affair with secretary Jessica Hahn, and former senator Gary Hart ended his 1988 presidential cam- paign when his affair with Donna Rice became public. Speaking of affairs, the movie Fatal Attraction made a killing at the box office and had men thinking twice about giving their kid a pet rabbit. The top 5 grossing movies of 1987 were: Three Men and a Baby, Fatal Attraction, Beverly Hills Cop II, Good Morning Vietnam, and Moonstruck. The Cosby Show continued its streak of five consecutive seasons as the #1 rated television show, while Roseanne, A Different World, Cheers, and 60 Minutes, rounded out Nielsen’s Top 5 TV shows in 1987. The Bangles, who had many peo- ple Walk Like An Egyptian, was the #1 single on Billboard’s Year-End Hot 100 Singles chart. Alone by Heart, Shake You Down by Gregory Abbott, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston, and Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship, completed the Top 5 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1987. At the 30th Annual Grammy Awards, recognizing musicians from 1987, Josh- ua Tree by U2 won Album of the Year. Other grammy winners includ- ed, Somewhere Out There by James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt —Song of the Year; Always and Forever by Randy Tra- vis —Best Country Vocal Performance, Male; and in a stunner, A Polka Just For Me by Jimmy Sturr, took the grammy for Best Polka Recording. In 1987, we learned of the passing of Fred Astaire, Jackie Gleason, Rita Hayworth, Danny Kaye, Liberace, Buddy Rich, and Andy Warhol. Also in 1987, these people were born who would eventually become famous or infamous: Novak Djokovic, James Holmes, Ke$ha, Amanda Knox, Maria Sharapova, Elizabeth Smart, and Tim Tebow. Highlights from around the world of sports in 1987 are as follows: In baseball, Catfish Hunter and Billy Williams were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The Minnesota Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals in a nail biting 7 games to win the World Series. Speak- ing of nail biting, Twins pitcher Joe Niek- ro was suspended 10 days in August for having a nail file on the pitcher’s mound. In basketball, the Los Angeles Lak- ers won the NBA Championship, while the Indiana Hoosiers were crowned NCAA Champions. In football, The New York Giants defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI. The Miami Hurricanes won the National Championship, and Notre Dame Wide Receiver, Tim Brown, won the Heisman Trophy. In hockey, the Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup. In motor racing, Bill Elliott won the Daytona 500, and Al Unser won the Indianapolis 500. In tennis, Ivan Lendl won the Men’s US Open, and Martina Navratilova won the Women’s US Open. In golf, the Men’s and Women’s US Open were won by Scott Simpson and Laura Davies, respectively. A recap of 1987, wouldn’t be com- plete without recognizing why we’re all here: to salute the 1987 Brewers. Many great moments happened that season, including the team’s 13-game winning streak, Juan Nieves’ no-hit- ter, Easter Sunday, and Paul Molitor’s 39-game hitting streak, 1987, what a year!
