Eastern MassachusettsHigh School HockeyTournament

LOFTS J.McGUIRE

TOURNAMENTDIRECTOR

The memories, apparently, becomemore profound as the years pass.

Three heroes of the state high schoolhockey tournament the first, the latestand the greatest. The memories.

Jack Garrity was first. It was 36 years ago, the first Massa-

chusetts tournament. It was a hastity-organi/.ed affair, born out of a two-yearold New England tourney. Medford andMelrose met for the title, on March 12,1943.

"The game was played between

By STEVE HARRISBoston Herald American

periods of a Boston Olympics-NewYork Rovers Eastern League game,"Garrity remembers. "They'd play oneperiod, then we'd come on."

A Boston Garden crowd of 9084looked on as Medford's Garrity, play-ing despite a heavy cold, fired home a25-foot wrist shot at 5:51 of a second, sudden death overtime. The Mustangshad a 2-1 victory and the schoolboyskaters had their fust hero.

Garrity would go on to an All-America career at Boston University

and a place in the 1948 U.S. Olympicteam, but the Garden memories re-mained special.

"In those days it was everything,"he says. "This was the big thing. To bein the Boston Garden, to play on theGarden ice. Gee/., you lived for that."

Garrity was the tourney's first hero,Nccdham's Robbie Rorek was unques-tionably the greatest. For him, the mem-ories are a little different.

"So many good things happened tome during my tournament days,"

Twelfth Annual (Continued from page 5)

Ftorek said recently. "Probably thebiggest goat thai I remember, oddly, was the sixth goal against Melrose myjunior year (the '69 final, won byNeedham, 6-3).

"It was late in (he game and ildidn't really mean much, but it was anice goal. I was sliding on the ice andthe puck went upstairs with one hand.A pret ty nice goal.

"The game that was probably builtup the most was my senior year, againstMaiden Catholic. This guy was supposedto cover me man-to-man. I can't re-member his name, I should be able to,but 1 can't. Anyway, there was a bigto-do about him covering me. We wonthe game something like 12-0."

The names and numbers arc a l i t t lehazy for Ftorek, but it's unders tandablehe can't recall Paul O'Neil's name, orthat the score was 11-1. There've been alot of names-and par t icular ly a lot ofnumbers-since for Ftorek, whose ac-complishments in the World HockeyAssociation have made him perhaps thegreatest American-born player ever.

"What I remember most was goingback out on the ice after we won mysenior year. My dad and Mr. (Rocketscoach John) Chambers kind of gave mea hug. And the disappointment . Ilsuddenly hi ts you that it's the last timeyou're going to be playing hockey wi ththese guys. I remember siding in thelocker room with my head down andjust feeling awful . Really awful."

It was a feeling the latest of theGarden's heroes hasn't yet experienced.

A year ago, Bur l ington defenscmanChuck Robinson sunk the 40-foot slapshot that gave the Red Devils a 5-4, two-overtime t r i u m p h over Matignon in theDivision I final.

For Robinson, a key again this yearto Burlington's tournament hopes, themoment is etched clearly in remem-berance- but not yet clouded by senti-menta l i ty .

"Yes, it was my biggest goal," hesays, "but I don't know, it's l ike justanother game. You can't make it toobig. The puck'! Ycl\ it was given tome. . .but I gave it to the goalie."

Ten, 20 years from now, that puckand the memories—will mean a lot moreto Chuck Robinson.

TOURNEY TOPICS-Tlm year's fieldis the biggest ever: 58 teams, including27 in Division 1 and 31 in Division 2.Yet many coaches were not happy withthe new selection format, under whichnon-league games counted for the firsttime. "My opinion," said tournamentdirector Lofts (Mickey) McGuire, "isthat only league games should count.". . . A Quik Quiz, a snap for any truefan: I . He led Lowell to state titles asplayer and coach, now he's a top EC ACcoach. 2. This fu ture Bruin accumu-lated seven goals and two assists in one'74 tourney game. 3. Four of 1971champ Arlington's players made the all-tourney team. Name them. 4. A futureCanadien, he won a '75 semifinal with a50-footer wi th one second left in regula-tion. 5. His team was knocked out int h e '75 quarters, but he was the all-tourney goalie. 6. A member of that'75 al l - tourney team, many t h ink he'llbe on the NHL's All-Rookie team nextyear. Answers below.

If you could get a Las Vegas line onsuch things, few people would be betterat handicapping the LMass tournamentt h a n Boston College assistant coachSteve Cedorchuk. His views on iheteams to beat and the players towatch. . .

"I'd say Mat ignon and Burl ingtonare in a class by themselves. If St. John'sPrep can gel some scoring balance, they'll be tough. For sleepers, I'd sayActon-Boxboro, Saugus, Norwood or

Winthrop. 1 th ink Matignon has threeof the top eight kids in the state:Tommy O'Regan, George White andJerry August. August, I think he's goingto the National Hockey League. BobbyBrooke of Acton is tremendous, too."

Cedorchuk went on to name St.John's sophomore Bob Carpenter ,"nearly as good as anyone already."The other names that popped up, eacha fine college prospect: Natick's SteveRich, Saugus' Paul Nigro, Jack Fahcyand Mat t Shramek of Burlington,Danny Morgan and Miles Boulter ofWinthrop, Kim Langway of Randolph,Robin Monleon of Austin Prep and BillMcDooough of Stoneham. His topgoalies? Bill O'Connor of Billerica andPhil Ternullo of defending Division 2champ Arl ington Catholic, whichCedorchuk rates a co-favorite withBarnstablc and Falmouth. Oh yes, thequi/. answers. . . . 1. BC's Len Ceglarski, who played on and coached Walpolewinners . 2. Bob Mil ler , who bombardedDon Rosco in a first round game.3. Kevin Carr, goalie Chuck Cremans,Br ian Mulcahy and Jay Shaughnessy.Curiously , ne i the r Bill Corkery norMike Flanagan were named. 4. Ran-dolph's Rud Langway. 5. WeymouthNorth 's Mark Holdcn. whose 42-saves,threc-OT loss to Maiden Catholic isconsidered by many the greatest goal-lending performance in tourney history.6. Ralph Cox. an Archbishop W i l l i a m sstar of '75 and Al l -Amer ica al NewHampshire .

M. S. S. P. A.Massachusetts Secondary School Principals Association

The Massachusetts Secondary School PrincipalsAssociation is composed of heads of the Commonwealthpublic and Catholic secondary schools.

M.S.S.P.A. is sponsor of the Hastern Massachusetts-State Hockey Tournament held at Boston Garden onMarch 6, 7, 8. 9, 10, 12, 20.

Besides the hockey tournament , the responsibi l i ty forother types of compet i t ion includes cross-country and soc-cer in the fa l l , ba ske tba l l , indoor track, wres t l ing , swim-ming, and gymnastics as well as hockey during the win te rand baseball, outdoor track, tennis and golf in the spring.

Responsibility extends to the regula t ion of all sportseligibility, all-star and other non-season competitions aswell as to the many other facets of athletics.

Unt i l the M.S.S.P.A. took over regulat ion and opera-tion of multiple school athletic events in Massachusetts, the s i tua t ion approached near chaos. Everybody andanybody were r u n n i n g post-season games and tour-naments . Seasons overlapped and conflicted. In generalthere was mass confusion.

The M.S.S.P.A. took over, organized and ins ta l l ed rulesand regulations. School events were run by school people.Athletes had to be school s tudents in good s tanding in theirmarks and cit izenship. The M.S.S.P.A. sports credo is thatathletics are a privilege, not just inheri ted.

M.S.S.P.A. is. however, much more than an athleticorganization.

That can be deduced from its other committees whichfar outnumber those concerned w i t h athletics, all underdirection of the Executive Board.

The committees are Academic A f f a i r s . EducationalPolicies, Music, Drama, Forensics and Debating; Citizen-ship. State High School Equivalency, Professional Stan-dards. Legislative, Science Fair, Of f i c i a l s Fees, Scholar-ship. National Honor Society. School and College Rela-tions, External Testing, N.E. Association of Colleges andSecondary Schools, Student Council as well as discussionalgroups.

Thus it is apparent that everything about everything per-ta ining to secondary schools in Massachusetts is the in-terest of M.S.S.P.A.

However, sports led to the formation of the M.S.S.P.A.which took the in i t ia t ive and brought order out of chaos.

This is an organi /a t ion of vo luntary members, ademocratic and permissive body operated wi th democraticrepresentation across the state and par l iamentary pro-cedures whose members abide by the regulations of theorganizat ion through their own in i t i a t ive in membership .

The income from tournaments such as this BostonCiarden competi t ion, after the competing schools arc reim-bursed for expenses in keeping wi th a policy t h a t no schoolshall su f f e r f i nanc ia l ly from such competition, cover ex-penses of the so-called 'loser1 sports l ike cross country, in-door and outdoor state t rack meets and competitions insoccer, swimming and wres t l ing as well as those in golf,t e n n i s and baseball.

I t goes, too. in to an annual scholarship fund dis t r ibutedproport ionately to q u a l i f y i n g students throughout theCommonwealth and for science fair and festivals in musicand drama as well as other programs which benefitstudents — male and female — in the state's secondaryschools.

The M.S.S.P.A. is the Watchdog of school sports andthe Guardian of school academics.

It also is the staunch f r iend of school students.
