Sometime in his career, each pilot can expect to encounterstrange, unusual happenin gs which will never be adequately oren tirely explained by logic or subsequen t invest igation. The follow-ing article recounts just such an episode as reported by two F-4Phantom c rew s of th e Imperial Iranian Air Force during late 1976.No additional information or explanation of the strange events hasbeen forthc'oming; the story will be filed away and probably for-gotten, but it makes interesting, and possibly dist urbing, reading.

Until 0030 on a clear autumn morning, it had been anentirely routine night watch for the^mperial Iranian Air Force'scommand postjin the Tehran area. In quick succession, four callsarrived from one of the city's suburbs reporting a series of strange

adjusting their night vision devices for landing. The landing wasfurther complicated by excessive interference on UHF and a furthercomplete loss of all communications when passing through a 150degree magnetic bearing from the home base. The inertial naviga-tion system simultaneously fluctuated from 30 to 50 degrees. A civilairliner approaching the area also experienced a similar communica-tions failure, but reported no unusual sightings.

While on a long final approach, the F-4 crew noted a furt herUFO. This was described as a cylinder-shaped object (about thesize of a T-33 trainer) with bright steady lights on each end and a -flasher in the middle. It quickly approached and passed directlyover the F-4. In answer to the pilot's query, the control towerreported no other air traffic in the area, although they subsequently

A second F-4 was scrambled ten minutes after the first. The backsesiter reported radar-lock on the UFO at 27 NM/12 o'clock

"high position, and a rate of closure of 150 knots. U p o n reaching the25 NM point, the object began rapidly moving away to maintain aconstant separation distance while still visible on th e radar scope.W h i l e the size of the radar return was comparable to that of a KC-135, its intense brilliance made estimation of actual size impossible.Visually, it resembled flashing strobe lights arranged in a rectangu-lar pattern and alternating blue, green, red, and orange. Theirsequence was so fast that all colors could be seen at once.

As the F-4 continued pursuit south of Teh ran, a secondbrightly-lit object (about one-half to one-third the size of the moon)detached from the original UFO and headed straight for the F-4 at ahigh rate of speed. , The pilot attempted to fire an AIM-9 missile atthe new object but was prevented by a sudden power loss in his-weapons control panel. UHF and internal communications were

James 0|berg's article for UFO Update in the August i : sueis rhetorical prose at its worse. He has used inuendo, guiltby association, introduced facts that were not part of the orstory and shown them to be false, introduced the presence ofJupiter and all but ".stated that it is the cause of the eventwhile choosing to ignore radar lockons by the F-^ chasing theobject. Because I am about to depart for a brief holiday and a business trip tothe mid-west, I will reply here only to one of the gross errors and falsehoto be found in your recent White Paper FL-3 of unknown date. This is yourthat I resorted to falsehoods in matters pertaining to the Iranian UFO inciin communications with you and Stan Friedman. 1. At about 1250 AM 19 September 197-6 the IIAF Command post received atelephone call from the ADOC representative at f-'ehrabad. He said thatMehrabad had received four telephone calls from citizens living in theSheniran area saying that they had seen strange objects in the sky. Onelady described them as a kind of bird while another lady said, "please tellthis helicopter with a light on to get away from my house because f l mscared," (there were no helicopters airborne at that time). The c tizenswere told it was probably stars.2. The Command post called Brigadier General Yousefi, Assistant DeputyCommander of Operations. After Yousefi talk ed to Mehrabad tower anddetermined Babolsar and Shahrokhi radar did ^ot have the object he decidedto look for himself. He noticed an object in the sky similar to a starbut bigger and brighter. He decided to scramble and F-4 from Sharokhi to

As he turned the object fell in trail at what appearedthe be about 5-4 NM. As he continued in his turn away from the primaryobject the second object went to the inside of his turn then returned tothe primary object for a perfect rejoin.7. Shortly after the second object joined up with the primary objectanother object appeared to com? out of the other side of the primary objectgoing straight down, at a great rate of speed. The F-4 crew had regainedcommunications and the weapons control panel and watched the object approachthe ground anticipating a large explosion. This object appeared to cometo rest gently on the earth and cast a very bright light over an area ofabout 2-3 kilometers.8. The crew descendec from their altitude of 26 M to 15 M and continuedto observe and mark the object's position. They had some difficulty inadjusting their night visibility for landing so after orbiting Mehrabad afew times they went out for a straight in landing. There was a lot ofinterference on the UHF and each time they passed through a Mag. bearingof 150 from Mehrabad they lost their communications (UHF and Interphone)and the INS fluctuated from 50 - 50. The one civil airliner that wasapproaching Mehrefbad du ring this same time experienced comr.Linicationsfailure in the sane vicinity (Kilo Zulu) but did not report seeing anything.

Enclosed is The Enquirer's story on the UFO over Tehran that waschased by two Iranian Air Force jets. It is " b a s e d on two files, by a free lance journalist in Tehran and the other by John Checkla roving editor for the En-uirer based in London, plus a telephointerview by John Gathcart with an Iranian Air Force general. Wedeleted the Iranian journalist's name because one of the conditiunder which he obtained the story was that he not be identified wi' in any way. We do not have transcripts of The interviews conducteither him or Checkley. However-, the details of what they wrotefairly well known anyway. Perhaps the most interesting item inpackage w^s C^thcart's interview with the Iranian general. Severathings the general said were ouite interesting but the most-signiwas a statement to the effect that the Iranian and U.S. air forcexchange information on UFOs. We were never able to verify anythinthis nature fromthe Pentagon or the Air Force or the Military Assand Advisory Group (MAAG) in Tehran. The best we could get out oU.S. military inTehran was that the Iranians invited"MAAG- to hav s c x x r t sit in on the debriefing of the two jet pilots. An Army colin charge of public information for MAAG told us that two relativlow-ranking staff officers fromthe U.S. Air Force did sit in on tdebriefing but no report was ever made on the session and none wassent to the Pentagon.
