DRAFT: 1967 1st Women’s National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championships

Background material on how this Championship Program came about: In late 1965 Margaret “Peggy” Kelso of Dalton, IL made a formal request to Joe Rogers, the Chairman of the National YMCA Aquatic Committee, to allow Women to have their own National YMCA Swimming and Diving Championship Meet. In turn, Joe asked her to recruit an ad hoc committee and come up with recommendations and or guidelines for the establishment of this championship meet. Peggy began her work by contacting individuals expressing interest in such a program for women from across the United States; from YMCA’s, from Colleges and Universities, and from High Schools. The committee was formed by the following individuals:

Peggy Kelso, Chairman George Williams College, Chicago, Illinois Marguerite Clifton Dept. of P.E. for Women Purdue University Berthaida Fairbanks Dept. of P.E. for Women Univ. Rochester, Charles Gomori YMCA 933 Mentor, Painesville, OH Claryce Holmberg Springfield College Springfield, MA Elizabeth Pulley Washington Park YMCA Dr. Phoebe Scott Illinois State University Roberta Turcotte 1515 W. Touhy, Park Ridge, Illinois Jim Stocker La Grange YMCA Western Springs, Illinois Helen Westerberg George Williams College Chicago, Illinois Virginia Woods Chicago Public Schools Chicago, Illinois Ruth Hill, Secretary South Holland, Illinois

This committee met on several occasions and established the following guidelines for the 1st YMCA National Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship Meet: 1. Participants must be active members of their local YMCA 2. Participants must have a physical examination before competing. 3. Participants must qualify in Local, State or Regional Meets 4. Teams must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. 5. There will be two age groups: 12-14 and 15-19 years old. 6. The “Order of Events will be the same as the Men’s Championship. 7. Participants may not be professional or employed by the YMCA. 8. One piece bathing suits must be worn. These guidelines were submitted to Joe Rogers and he asked Margaret Kelso to present them to the entire National YMCA Aquatic Committee. The guidelines were accepted with two (2) changes and those were in #5 and #6. In #5, instead of two age groups there would be only one age bracket and that would be Senior--twelve and over, and in #6 the 1650 Freestyle (added to the “Order of Events” in 1970) was eliminated from the 1st Women’s Championship. The National YMCA Aquatic Committee also added the stipulation that this meet would be conducted on a three year trial basis and would be evaluated again after the Championship in 1969.
