A story with a point. Nine years ago my mother was reaching the end of her life as her heart was weakening. My sister had arranged for a round-the-clock caregiver at our family home. My sister and I took turns spending several days at a time with our mother. A few weeks before our mother’s death I went to her parish where she had been a member for 50 years. I introduced myself to the pastor, Fr. Murphy and asked him if he would come and anoint my moth-er. He was happy to do so and came immediately. I brought him into my mother’s room and told her that Father had come to pray with her and anoint her. My mother looked at him and was so happy that he had come. He prayed the usual prayers and my mother was very comfortable with it all. He anointed her and all was very meaningful for her. A few hours later my mother mentioned to me that Fr. Murphy had been there. Some hours later she mentioned it again. A few days passed. My mother was heard to say, “Fr. Murphy was here.” Although my mother spoke very little in the last weeks of her life, she would mention every few days, “Fr. Murphy was here.” In fact, a few hours before my mother died, her caregiver told me that my mother had said once more, “Fr. Murphy was here.” My mother loved the Catholic faith and the Church. Clearly it was so important for her that she could receive that one last means of grace, her final preparation for death. AND she was completely aware of what took place. The reason I tell this story is because so very many people wait until their loved one is within days or hours of dying before they call the priest.
• Don’t wait until the person can no longer speak.
• Don’t wait until the person cannot fully participate in the prayers.
• Don’t wait until they cannot make their confession and receive Communion.
• Don’t wait until the person is unaware of their surroundings.
Call the priest when the person has an awareness of their surroundings. Call the priest when the person can make their last confession. Call the priest when the person is still able to receive Communion (and able to
swallow). Call the priest when the person is fully aware of the prayers and able to participate
in the ritual of the sacrament. There are seven sacraments in the Catholic Church. One of them is called “The Anointing of the Sick”. Years ago it was called “Extreme Unction” or “The Last Rites”. We no longer use these terms. This sacrament is meant for the living and for those who need God’s grace, strength and blessing as they face old age, illness or inev-itable death. Catholics have a sacrament called Extreme Unction: FALSE Catholics have a sacrament called The Last Rites: FALSE Catholics have a sacrament called The Anointing of the Sick: TRUE When the priest comes to celebrate The Anointing of the Sick for a loved one – wheth-er at home or in a care center – be sure to have family present so all can pray together – led by the priest. Don’t leave the room when the priest arrives. Let family know ahead of time when the priest will come so they can plan to be there. It may be your last time to pray together as a family. How meaningful that can be! We celebrate “The Anointing of the Sick” about 4 times a year at Christ the King. Our next celebration will be on Saturday February 8 at 10:30 am. Bring your elderly or sick family members or friends for a Mass – within which they will receive this sacra-ment. You can receive this sacrament any number of times and request it any time. How? Call the parish to request the sacrament – which can take place here at the church or at one’s home/care center. Sr. Dominic Marie, OP
The Presenta on of the Lord February 2, 2020
First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 The book of Malachi was wri en a er the Jews re-turned from exile in Babylon. The prophet expresses God’s displeasure because the peo-ple have grown lax in their reli-gious prac ces. (It may be helpful to know that the term “Sons of Levi” describes Tem-ple priests and func onaries.) Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18 The Le er to the He-brews was wri en to a com-munity of Chris ans who had become dispirited and whose faith was faltering. Death was thought by biblical people to be the work of the devil, and not intended by God. Today’s passage tells how Christ en-tered fully into human life even to the point of suffering and death.
