2018 is just around the corner—2017 just flew past! Where did it go? What a year in the life of the our club ! Major renovations, another successful swap meet, a couple of well enjoyed rallies to Lake Goldsmith and Round the Bend, GVMVDC hosting the Rally of the Valley and many other events of interest. Congrats to all committee members, rally organisers and pretty much everyone for contributing to a successful 2017. What’s around the corner? In March the Limestone Coast Rally, if interested contact Leigh Johnston as there is room for one vehicle and two people. April brings our tourers to the Alpine and South Coast regions of NSW, there are still a few vacancies. Please talk to either Phil Podbury or John Truman. Our rally directors put a lot of time and effort into making these events the success they are. A couple of initiatives from the committee. Firstly all prospective members will meet with the committee to discuss the expectations of both parties, before membership approval is given.

Secondly an attendance sheet will be drawn up and circulated at each meeting/event. Over time the info will indicate which members are participating in the many functions provided by the club. It will be interesting to see the results and perhaps help us to cater to the wishes of our changing demographic.

Do you have a suggestion? Could it be a special interest training day, a guest speaker for a non-general meeting day, learn CPR, you tell me. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to family and friends who have lost members during the course of the year. On behalf of the Committee past and present, we thank you for your continuing support and we look forward to a safe and prosperous 2018.

Please be safe on the roads, especially during the silly season, do have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Catch you at the meeting. Bill Winters

The Annual General Meeting has been and gone, with a few positions changing. Welcome to the

members who have volunteered to help the Club, and thank-you to those who are stepping down. I will be doing the Journal again this year (what a surprise!)

There are plenty of events coming up over the next couple of months, including two of the Club’s best attended – the Christmas Break-up (this weekend) and Twilight in Nathalia. I’ll be at both – hopefully you can be too.

I normally send out a membership list in February. If any of your contact details have changed (quite a few people are doing away with their land-line phone and just using a mobile), please fill out the renewal form and get it to me soon. If you haven’t got a form, just email the details to the club email address on page 2.

See you at the meeting. Don’t forget to wear your name badge so everyone knows who you are. Brendan Walsh

Delegates’ Meeting & Annual General Meeting, Springvale – 27th November 2017

Monday night’s meeting was the annual meeting with Keith Mortimer taking on the position of Chairman again for the next year. We have 3 new faces on the committee which is good.

The Guest Speaker was Brian Tanti who has spent the last 27 years working with the Fox Family collection.

Regarding the membership fee for clubs, some clubs would like it to be reduced to $1.00 per member. Keith Mortimer will look into this and report at next meeting.

The AOMC is looking for more support with their push to have the Luxury Car Tax removed. There is no Australian car manufacturing anymore, so the only people being hurt are us car collectors.

Anyway the importation of classic cars is now almost impossible with the Australian Border Force zero tolerance of asbestos. “It doesn’t matter how old the vehicle is or what type it is – if we suspect it may contain asbestos we will request assurances from the importer to ensure that it doesn’t.” Recent detected vehicles Chev Corvette, 1963 Ford Falcon, 1971 Mazda RX-2 and 1954 BSA Bantam. **Mid-week Coffee Run, The Provender Café, (next to the Shepparton Motor Museum) 10 am, Wednesday 20th December 2017

Remember the coffee run here just before Christmas last year? We had 80-odd turn up for coffee, somewhat overwhelming the staff at the café. Nicole (owner) has nearly recovered and is happy to see us again!

You should have finished your Christmas shopping by then, and need a break. On the other hand, it is a good opportunity for out-of-towners to come to Shepp and pick up that last minute gift for your dearest.

The museum currently has a couple of great cars you probably haven’t seen before – one of them (an English car - technically) is for sale!

So, let’s have a last run before Christmas and see the year out well.

**Mooroopna New Year’s Eve Festival – Sunday 31st December 2017

The Rotary Club of Mooroopna welcomes our support with our vehicles in this year’s New Year’s Eve street parade and festival. Please meet at Mooroopna War Memorial parking area at 6pm. (Opposite McDonald’s). The parade will start at 6.30pm. A police vehicle will lead the parade followed by Vintage/Classic vehicles (us), kids on bikes, floats and trucks. (This will ensure no stopping at traffic lights, etc and the parade will move at a reasonable pace).

On reaching the reserve, members are requested to form a static display (for a short period) at the end of the parade. Stay for as long as you like – it is a good night!

BYO chairs; food and drink available.

**Twilight Run to Nathalia, Broken Creek Foreshore – 6pm Sunday 14th January 2018

This is the now traditional twilight picnic on the Broken Creek at Nathalia. There will be more about this in the January Journal, but put it in your diary.

Mid-week Coffee Run, Legendairy Bar and Grill, Stanhope – 21st November 2017

Some 40 people just had to have their morning caffeine fix at Stanhope. It was lovely weather for a top-down run (“topless” doesn’t sound quite right does it?). It was an enjoyable run, with people dispersing for lunch all over the place. Well done Legendairy.

Of note was the first Club outing of the XK150 FHC Jag – beautiful, and sounding great. Well done Fred; we look forward to seeing more of it.

Mid-week Coffee Run, Bruce Hargrave Art Exhibition Euroa 27 September 2017

I thought that club members would like to know the results of my exhibition in September. During the exhibition, over one quarter of my paintings were sold and I had received a number of commissions. Twenty per cent of all sales, excluding commissions, was donated to the Euroa Health Building Fund which amounted to my donation of $850. This amount included $80 which was donated by club members on the day.

The photo shows Suzie and myself presenting the monies to Euroa Health CEO Wayne Sullivan. Best wishes, Bruce Hargrave

We arrived to see that Ken had a nice new parking area reserved for us, sadly not enough vehicles to fill it.

It was a very pleasant evening, with a lot to do especially for the kids. We tried to win a ham, with no success. It is a good fun raiser for them.

We had three cars attend, also a 1957 Cadillac belonging to a local and a 1999 Cobra. Lloyd Healey

The GVMVDC Jamieson and Flats Trip – 25th-26th November 2017 (Granny Flat, Wrens Flat, Mitchells Flat, Tobacco Flat, Sheepyard Flat)

Participants and vehicles: Gordon Newton - Toyota Landcruiser troopie Tony Scott and Barry Galvin - 1984 Hino 4x4 ex-fire truck, 11Tonne Harold Battersby - Nissan Navara ST R 3.0 Daniel, Alan and Harvey Lavis - Toyota Prado (auto) Rod and Jonno Mauger - Toyota Prado (manual)

At 8:30am at the club rooms Saturday morning the sky was clear and the birds were singing, and the weather person was predicting 31oC with rain and storms. Undeterred, the happy team headed for Jamieson for a 10:30am rendezvous with coffee. The nice young lady at the shop was fast with the coffee and full of

advice on places of interest along our route and fire regulations (which were not a problem). First stop for a look at the Jamieson River was at Granny Flat. This was followed by a climb up a ridge on

the Gallows track and back to the Licola Road, the first test of the day with a couple of steep sections, and which all passed with flying colours. Second low seemed to do the trick for most in the steepest parts. Then a mostly easy drive on to Wrens Flat for a bite of lunch at 1 o’clock.

The vehicles were all doing well and everybody was in good spirits. The air was warm, the sky was mostly bright blue with just a few fluffy white clouds gently floating by, but the weather radar was telling a different story to the north and west. With lunch devoured, bravely the team

crossed the Jamieson River and headed up the Mitchells track to the north and a bit west-ish to Mitchells Flat and beyond. The track was mostly up and up, and provided a few sections of interest ranging from a small creek, to mud holes, to rock, to loose rock, to very loose rock, to ruts, to deep ruts, to tree trunks, (they always cut them only just wide enough for a normal 4x4.) Most managed in low second, but a few needed first low and a second go at some parts.

The CB radios proved very handy in letting others know the track situation, and their own situation, and the presence of others also enjoying the great outdoors. The track was not all that wide and it was refreshing to meet courteous drivers going down-hill at sensible speeds who gallantly parked to the side to allow us to press on uphill. They were all true gentlemen of the road, or was it that our lead driver looked like he could use all the help he could get, or the fact that he was very quick to mention that a certain 11Tonne 4x4 ex-fire truck was not far behind? Whatever the reason, they were true gentlemen to the last, even the girls. Again, our intrepid drivers proved that they, and their vehicles, were up to the task and triumphing over all adversity reached the top, and the view from the top, adjacent to the abandoned slate mine, was worth it.

The air was warm and magic with eucalyptus scent, and there were just a few more fluffy white clouds

floating about. The trees were tall, and some of the discussion may, just may, have been too. Gazing from the

top some of us thought of past adventures, some thought of mates we had shared similar scenes with, some thought of dinner, some thought of where Albert Namatjira got his blue water colour hills from, and some thought of the weather radar.

Having drunk in the sights and smells we pressed on down-hill on the Steiner’s track and then Howqua track, low second was the go, and looking very eagerly and intently to see if we too could prove we were gentlemen of the road. Unfortunately, we were not to have the opportunity. At the bottom of the 3.5km decline, and a bit of easy track, we reached Tobacco Flat on the Howqua River. Time to regroup and then on to Sheepyard Flat for the night’s camp.

Arriving at camp at 4pm Gordon was first set up, popping the troopie top, swinging open the back doors and stove and sitting in his camp chair, all in 30 seconds. Tents and swags set up, it was time for the boys to play Frisbee, while the rest sat down for an informative discussion and some cleansing beverages. By 6pm the

weather radar was completely forgotten being replaced by the vista of heavy dark clouds and impressive thunder claps. Dodging a few raindrops, dinner was cooked and eaten followed by more informative discussion held under a very nice canvas awning courtesy of the Lavis team. The morning was dry with mist gently rising up between the surrounding the hills, and a not unpleasant 16oC.

Harold was first up, closely followed by Tony and Barry. The camp fire was going in no time. Breakfast was at a leisurely pace ranging from tea and toast, to cereal, sausages, and eggs and bacon. This was followed by a slow camp pack up, a walk around, and an easy drive out to Mansfield for coffee and cake at 11-ish. The talk ranged far and wide and included possible future trips. Farewells were said. The drive home was at an easy pace through rain showers.

A good time was had by all. Rod Mauger

1957 FORD MAINLINE utility – Leigh and Lynne Johnston

Ever since I was a teenager I always admired Ford Customlines and Mainlines. I just loved the look of them, inside and out, and the deep double beat of that ‘Y’ block V8 is pure music to the ears.

One of my mates at high school’s father had a

Star model Mainline that he used to take us out to the river in. I just loved it. One day, I thought, I’ll own one.

Well that day took until 2010 when I saw this Mainline ute advertised in Restored Cars. Upon ringing I found out the Mainline was located in Gympie Queensland, but it sounded like what I wanted; it was restored but not modified. The elderly owner had owned the ute since around 1965 and most of its life had been in north-east Victoria before he retired to Queensland.

All sounds good so far, so being short of time and hearing good reports of certain companies that appraise cars prior to purchase, I engaged one. I got a comprehensive positive report so I purchased the vehicle.

When the ute arrived in Kyabram via car transporter, the paintwork, while looking good in photos and from a distance, was not so – the paintwork was very average. Next it was sent for a RWC inspection – tie rod ends, stub axles etc. The rear shackles didn’t even have bushes in them – some inspection in Qld!

Not long after obtaining a RWC

and getting it on Club Permit, I was asked to take it to the ute museum at the Deni Ute Muster. On the way up I found it had vacuum leak and surged badly. The distributor had not been touched and had to be reco’d. It was the same with the carby, then the fuel pump went. As well as this, it had a vibration which has taken a lot of chasing. The flywheel and clutch assembly were balanced, same for the tailshaft and the harmonic balancer. It also got new uni’s and gearbox yoke.

Pride and Joy

December 2017

Page 13

On the positive side, the interior

was good, save the hood lining. The chrome was good and so was under the bonnet. Two years ago, not being happy with the paintwork, I had it stripped to bare metal for a full respray. We also replaced the headlining and windscreen at the same time. We have also fitted 15”Customline wheels in lieu of the standard 16”wheels. I was lucky enough to purchase a rear axle assembly from an auto Customline, 3.3 ratio, a lot better on the highway than the standard Mainline 4.1 ratio.

Other extras added were a power booster, heater/demister and Smiths gauges. She’s pretty right now,

although electric wipers would be nice!

In 2015 we drove the Mainline over to Adelaide for the Bay to Birdwood Classic. We were very happy that the Mainline got there and back with no problems and even happier that it made the Top 10 finalists in the concours. This year we took it down to the All Ford Day in Geelong and were pleasantly surprised to take out first place in the Customline-Mainline section.

Another thing that appeals to me is that the Mainline utes were unique to Australia, and were made in Geelong – a part of Australia’s motoring history.

Rally of the Valley 2017 – 3rd-7th November 2017

The GVMVDC organises the Rally of the Valley every third year, rotating with the West Gippsland and East Gippsland clubs. This year our rally committee was bigger than in previous years and was mostly members that had not been involved before, but it worked very well.

The weather forecast looked very promising in the week before the rally. It was going to be near-perfect for touring the countryside in classic cars! Previous rallies have often been hot but we have had some wet ones too.

Most visiting entrants arrived on the Friday evening to check in and wind down from their drive. There were a few new faces but most had been to one of our rallies before – it was good to catch up.

Saturday’s run started at the clubrooms with a welcome from Club President Bill and some instructions from Neil, who had organised that day’s tour. We headed west via Byrneside and Girgarre to visit the Camilk camel dairy just out of Rochester. This was a very interesting place where we learned about

the company and its ever-growing herd! It has about 300 camels at the moment, although only about 45 are milked. They don’t produce as much as cows (only about 5 litres per day) and don’t produce unless they have their calf with them – the calves stay for about 18 months. New camels usually come from northern Australia, after being broken in up there.

The milk is better

than cows’ milk in some ways (less fat, more vitamin C and antioxidants) but doesn’t taste much different – we all got a bottle to take home and try later.

Note the female on the right – she was preparing to give birth (but not before we left!)

The camel dairy – four camels in a row.

After a lunch at the Kyabram Club, we split into two

groups. The first destination was Isobel Harvie’s clothing and memorabilia display at the old Town Hall. The theme was “The Fabulous Fifties” and included dioramas of various household scenes from the era – a wedding, an evening out, the kitchen, the laundry, the bedroom and several others. All were filled with familiar items, even to those of us who weren’t around at the time!

Our second afternoon destination was the home of club members Frank and Enid Tobias. We have visited them on the rally before (back in 2005) but it’s always worth having a look around Frank’s shed, which is filled with all sorts of memorabilia. He’s also well known for his huge collection of spark plugs, one of the best in the country.

The evening get-together at the clubrooms featured a memorable presentation from three of our club members, Doug Thompson, John Hammond and Hugh MacFadyen, who participated in the 1979 Repco Reliability Trial, a gruelling 14-day 20,000km trial around Australia. Peter Brock and the Holden Dealer Team won but the Datsun Stanza entry from Shepparton did really well and led at various stages. All three members recounted stories about their experiences as driver, navigator/co-driver and mechanic, including stories about punctures and roll-overs. Sunday’s run headed north-east via Tungamah towards Yarrawonga. We hadn’t arranged it but our

convoy passed the 22 Ford Model Ts heading in the opposite direction along Youanmite Rd – a great sight! Even though Tungamah only has five streets, a few vehicles almost got lost after following one car that was detouring to visit friends!

Fortunately the right road out of town was found and all arrived at the Lake Mulwala foreshore in time for a look at the nearby market before our cruise. We did a full lap of the lake on the PS Cumberoona, checking out the waterfront houses and other sights while we enjoyed lunch.

After lunch we headed to Katamatite to visit the Historical Society’s Museum and catch up with the Ford Model T Club. Some had already left (we passed them on the way) but it was still great to see so many Ts together.

Don McPherson made several people very happy, giving them a ride (or even a drive) of his T roadster.

Page 23

Monday’s run was expected to be the highlight

of the weekend, and it didn’t disappoint. Noorilim is a magnificent historic property that has been reopened to the public in the last year or so, after quite a few years with no public access.

The current owners are in the art business, so there were quite a few interesting works hanging throughout the building, some that suited the surroundings and some that didn’t!

The gardens

surrounding the mansion are also magnificent, with several “garden rooms” created to feature a different style of garden. Lunch was pretty good too!

After lunch we headed back through Murchison and Toolamba to visit the Shepparton Motor Museum, which was substantially extended about a year ago. It’s always worth a look, as the vehicles on display are regularly changed.

The dinner dance was held at the Shepparton Golf Club and was a great venue – the clubhouse is on top of a small hill (not common around Shepparton!) and the views are down several of the fairways. Everyone enjoyed the trivia quiz that Robyn hosted and the music provided by club member Richie Priestley. Prizes were awarded for people’s choice and committee choice – well deserved by both. The “baton” was passed on to Glenn Burrage from the East Gippsland club to host the rally next year.

The rally ended on the Tuesday morning with the traditional breakfast at the clubrooms. It had been a great rally – I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. Brendan Walsh

Hello to fellow members at the GVMVDC.

For about 25 years Ros and I have been club members. We have many pleasant memories of outings and annual rallies organised by the club, we also value the practical help and advice given by numerous members to help keep our Morris cars on the road. Congratulations to a terrific club that is a credit to the historic car movement. Because of distance regretfully we are not renewing our membership. Thank you for allowing us to be club members and we wish you all the best in the years to come. Regards John and Ros Waterman
