Lent is almost here. Ash Wednesday is this week. It happens to fall on February 14th. Yes, this is also St. Valentine's Day. We can still wish the people we love all the best but we need to remember that for Catholics...it is a day of fasting. What does this mean? It means we refrain from meat, have one big meal and two small ones with no eating in between. I would add that perhaps we fast a little more from technology, sweets and alcohol that day as well. Anything that can help to keep this day different and more special, we should do. It is a great time to challenge ourselves.

TURNAROUND APPROACH The turnaround approach involves shared decision-making on administrative matters because both perspectives are important and required in decision-making. In summary: The pastor sets the overall vision, pastoral priorities, and long-term vision of ministry. The turnaround team supports the pastor in managing the administrative affairs of the parish to help

achieve the pastor’s overall vision: Determines financial implications of potential decisions, tradeoffs involved in decisions, and

options for most cost-effective ways of implementing programs. Provides robust support of the local mission and of the parish and school mission priorities. Gives detailed review and modification of all accounting and reporting practices to ensure the

parish has an accurate understanding of the parish’s financial situation. Plans and launches initiatives to improve revenue at the parish (i.e., marketing efforts to en-

hance school enrollment, planned offertory programs, parish fundraising) so that the local mis-sion continues to grow.

Gives detailed review of all ongoing expenses and action plans to reduce expenses where pos-sible (e.g., evaluating contracts with vendors, developing new approval processes for expens-es, monitoring ongoing expenses closely).

Gives detailed review of staffing requirements, responsibilities, and needs, and develops new approaches as necessary.

Supports the pastor in initiating or renewing parish councils (e.g., identifying, recruiting and onboarding qualified parishioners; holding regular meetings and preparing agenda)."

Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Pax,

Rev. Michal Lewon Pastor

Sunday, February 11th - Our Lady of Lourdes "On February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25, the lady identified herself with the words: 'I am the Immaculate Conception.'... Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862, Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907."

Wednesday, February 14th - Sts. Cyril (d. 869) and Methodius (d. 884)

"Holiness means reacting to human life with God’s love: human life as it is, crisscrossed with the political and the cultural, the beautiful and the ugly, the selfish and the saintly. For Cyril and Methodius much of their daily cross had to do with the language of the liturgy. They are not saints because they got the liturgy into Slavonic, but because they did so with the courage and humility of Christ."

Friday, February 16th - St. Gilbert of Sempringham - d. 1189 Gilbert was born in Sempringham, England, into a wealthy family, but he followed a path quite different from that expected of him as the son of a Norman knight. Sent to France for his higher education, he decided to pursue seminary studies. He returned to England not yet ordained a priest, and inherited several estates from his father. But Gilbert avoided the easy life he could have led under the circumstances. Instead he lived a simple life at a parish, sharing as much as possible with the poor. Following his ordination to the priesthood he served as parish priest at Sempringham... [Gilbert became a founder of a lay English religious community] Over the years a special custom grew in the houses of the order called “the plate of the Lord Jesus.” The best portions of the dinner were put on a special plate and shared with the poor, reflecting Gilbert’s lifelong concern for less fortunate people."

Saturday, February 17th - Seven Founders of the Servite Order "In 1240, seven noblemen of Florence mutually decided to withdraw from the city to a solitary place for prayer and direct service of God. Their initial difficulty was providing for their dependents, since two were still married and two were widowers. Their aim was to lead a life of penance and prayer, but they soon found themselves disturbed by constant visitors from Florence. They next withdrew to the deserted slopes of Monte Senario. In 1244, under the direction of Saint Peter of Verona, O.P., this small group adopted a religious habit similar to the Dominican habit, choosing to live under the Rule of St. Augustine and adopting the name of the Servants of Mary. The new Order took a form more like that of the mendicant friars than that of the older monastic

Page 6

New 5:30PM Sunday Evening Mass We added a new mass time at 5:30PM on Sunday Evenings. We started this initiative with busy families & parishioners in mind. We know that life can be busy and that makes it hard to participate in the Sunday liturgy. Therefore, our hope is that you find this time more accommodating to your schedule. We are also trying out different styles of music and instruments for this mass.

Join the growing number of people attending this

mass to praise the Lord and continue to grow closer to God through His word & the Eucharist.

MINISTRY OF CARE Ministry of Care Training will be offered on two consecutive Saturdays from 9:00am until 3:00pm on Feb. 24th and March 3rd. PADS MINISTRY

Where did you sleep last night? Each Saturday evening to Sunday morning, from May through September St. Colette Church will provide critical services for the local homeless community by providing overnight shelter, a hot dinner, breakfast, and a bag lunch in a warm, safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere with respect and dignity for all. Our St Colette faith-based shelter site will be managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. With 22 Saturdays and 15-20 persons per Saturday we are always in need of volunteers. If you are looking for direct interaction with guests during shelter hours, consider working an evening, overnight or serving dinner or breakfast. If you like to see the immediate fruits of your labor, then consider working the clean-up shift. Are you unable to contribute during shelter hours? Consider helping with food donations. Those who like to provide or prepare food might consider donating lunch ingredients, preparing dinner or breakfast entrees.

You can make a difference All volunteers need to participate in an orientation training. Training is essential to learn how Journeys is structured, how to interact with the clients, and on general volunteer opportunities. Please consider attending one of the following trainings: These trainings will take place at Journeys the Road Home 1140 E Northwest Highway, Palatine.
