GENERAL ALFRED M. GRUENTHER, U. S. Army

Supreme Allied Commander, Europe

Among the officers who ascend to the highest councils of military responsibility, many evidence marked talents for positions of command; many others reveal out-standing gifts for planning courses of action. But, it is rare indeed when these twin capacities are found in one individual. General Alfred M. Gruenther, U. S. Army, Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Europe, enjoys this unique distinction.

Born of Irish and German parents, educated in parochial schools, and ever nur-tured by the self-disciplines of an enduring faith, General Gruenther accepted the challenges of a military career in the noblest traditions available to man.

From his graduation with distinction at West Point in 1918 to the present, he has brought the full measure of his talents to the service of his country. As an instructor at the United States Military Academy for twelve years, he continued to cultivate in himself those qualities of leadership which inspire the subordinate, and gve authosity, coniideiice, and decisiveness to the commander.

As a staff officer, he has prepared and participated in the most challenging events of World War II. As Deputy Chief of Staff under General Dwight Eisenhower, Allied Forces Headquarters, he directed the planning of the North African invasion. As Chief of Staff under General Mark Clark, he directed the planning for the Fifth Army invasion of Italy, and ensuing peninsular mountain campaigns, involving the combined forces of the allied nations.

In the post-war era, he has served as commanding officer of the National War College, director of the Joint Staff, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and deputy chief of staff for combat operations, U. S. Army. In 1950, he was appointed chief of staff to the Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Europe. In 1953, General Gruenther be-came the Supreme Commander of the NATO forces, entrusted with the guardianship of the frontiers of Western civilization.

Thus, it is for these achievements, and even more so for his personal virtues, as teacher, soldier, statesman, and exemplary Christian gentleman, that Seattle Univer-sity is proud to bestow on Alfred Maximilian Gruenther the seal of its highest award—the degree of Doctor of Laws, HONORIS CAUSA.

THE HONORABLE WILLIAM A. SULLIVAN

Commissioner of insurance—State of Washington

The citizens who serve their nation in public life are legion, but seldom among them are found those who receive the unanimous tribute of public approval as does The Honorable William A. Sullivan, Commissioner of Insurance for the State of Washington.

An Irish immigrant, the seventh of eight children, educated in the National schools of Ireland, he began his colorful and honorable career at the early age of 17 in San Francisco in 1904. The death of his father ten years previously had placed the burdens of family guidance and survival on his mother, and from her he drew inspiration and encouragement. From her firmness, he learned self.discipline and justice; from her sacrifice, he learned charity and love; from her virtuous inde-pendence, he learned appreciation of human dignity and personal responsibility, and from her faith, he learned love of God.

This early molding of the mind and the heart in the best traditions of Irish heri-tage armed William A. Sullivan for the challenging opportunities of American life.

His distinguished career in public service was preceded by experience in the lumber industry, real estate, military service in World War I, railroad transporta-tion, and private banking and insurance.

Since his election to the office of Insurance Commissioner in 1932, he has main-tained the highest standards in the sacred trust of social responsibility. Under his careful direction and guidance, the legislation codifying the insurance statutes of Washington was enacted. These laws together with his prudent administration have become nationally and internationally recognized. He has constructed a framework which is governed by principles that contribute most highly to the broadest and most effective coverage of the calculable risks to which man, as a citizen in a free society, is exposed. These same principles at the same time preserve and enhance integrity of purpose, efficiency of operation, and extended benefit of private insurance service to our society as a whole.

He has served as president of the National Association of Insurance Commis-sioners and has been chairman of every major committee of this governing group. As dean among all regulatory officials of insurance on the North American conti-nent, he enjoys a status in the fields of finance, commerce, and social welfare which few men share.

He is a member of the boards of several state agencies concerned with citizen welfare. In addition, civic, fraternal, and educational organizations receive the benefit of his counsel and attention.

For these achievements, his unselfish service, and pre-eminently for his exemplary character as a Christian gentleman, Seattle University is proud to bestow upon the Honorable William A. Sullivan the seal of its highest award—the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa.

Baccalaureate Honors Based on the four-year scholastic record of the graduate, Baccalaureate Honors require

the earning of at least 90 quarter hours as a Junior and Senior at Seattle University, the securing of at least the grade B in the comprehensive written examination in Philosophy, and the attainment of a high grade point average in the four-year curriculum of studies. A candidate who has made an average of 3.25 graduates Cum Laude; one who has made an average of 3.5, Magna Cum Laude; one who has made an average of 3.75, Summa Cum Laude. An A grade carries 4 grade points, a B 3 grade points, a C 2 grade points, a D 1 grade point, and an E no grade points. . -
