The Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority dedicate this volume of THE ANCHOR to the cherished memory of Mrs. Lyman , our sorority mother. She has been the personification of Alpha Sigma Tau's idealistic womanhood and was a constant source

of inspiration to those with whom she ca me in contact. Her's is the living spirit back of Alpha

Sigma Tau activity and much of its succP.ss has been due to her ca pabl e guidance.

Girls are selected for membership in our sorority on account of their womanly qualities, their high ideals of scholarship and their campus activities as much as for their social qualities as indicated in the following taken from the constitution:

"We aim at true womanliness, good scholarship and self·sacrificing friendship one for another."

"The object of this fraternity shall be general culture, devotion to duty and loyalty to college, to friends, and to sisters."

" Pledges to the fraternity must have a 'C' ( 85 % or above ) average in scholarship in order to be initiated. If a pledge fails to attain this average for two consecutive terms, including the term in which she was invited, she shall be dropped from the list."

"When an active sister fail s for two consecutive terms to keep up 'C' average, she shall be suspended from all fraternity activities and privileges until her marks warrant her reinstatement."

The soroity was establi hed in 1899, at Michigan State Normal College, and is the third educational so rority e tabli hed in th United

tate . Th re are 300 alumnae members of Alpha Chapter.

History of Alpha Chapter, Michigan State Normal College

I •T WAS on an evening in the autumn of 1899 that a group of girls met at the home of Ruby Pratt on Huron Street to organize a little club or sorority. There were present at this first meeting, among

others, Helene Rice, her sister Adriance, Eva O'Keef, and Harriet Marx. There were then in existence on the campus three other sororities, Pi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Nu Phi and Zeta Phi (now inactive ) . The name Alpha Sigma Tau was chosen, and unfortunately, purple and go ld were selected for the colors. Thus is was that Alpha Sigma Tau , the third oldest educational sorority, was organized. A dozen or more very enthusiastic girls were present at this first meeting.

The next meeting was a little party at the home of lVirs. Depew on Forest Avenue where Helene and Adriance Rice, Eva O'Keef and Harriet Marx roomed. The party was indeed gay and festive with decorations of gold and purple. Even the cake was golden with purple icing. Here it was decided that the next day should witness the introduction of the newly born sorority to the world at large and to the student body in particular. Accordingly the members attended chapel en masse, everyone wearing the chosen colors. Imagine their surprise and chagrin when members of the Zeta Phi informed them that the Alpha Sigma Tau had appropriated their colors.

Mrs. E. A. Lyman was chosen patroness. During the fir st year of its existence the sorority did not display any marked activity. The charter was not received till the second year when Edith Silk, Myrtle Oram, Zoe Waldron, Grace Townley, Marie Gedding, Louise Agrell and Mable Pitts had joined the organization and with the organizers were the charter members. On the suggestion of Mrs. Lyman, 1iss Pearce and Miss Norton were asked to become patronesses. The charter members were very, very close friends and have ever since remained so . Three of us attended Zoe Waldron's wedding to Dr. Koch in Seattle and two attended my own in Helena, Montana, where Helene and Adriance Rice and I taught, and roomed together. In general , those first members followed Horace Greeley's advice and " went west", though he, I believe, confined his admonitions to "young men" .

Mabel Pitts taught in Seattle -when I lived in Tacoma and we spent many pleasant week-ends together. We had lost all track of Marie Gedding for some years when she, too, turned up in Seattle. We all lunched together and fought old battles over again on this occasion.

Helene Rice is now Mrs. Hallingby, living in Calumet, Mich., and · Adriance Rice, Mrs. Charles Settles, of Helena, Montant, died in 1919. Mable Pitts took a name very appropriate to her and is Mrs. C. E.

Joll y, of orth Y akima, Washington. Zoe Waldron is, as I have said , Mrs. Dr. Koch, and lives in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Zadie Dingfelder is Mrs. Billy Moffitt, of Aberdeen, Washington. It is good indeed to know that out of so small an acorn such a mighty oak has grown, or at least that from such a small beginning has come a sorority of such numbers and standing. But of this I am convinced, tha t to our patroness, Mrs. Lyman, and her coadjutors that success is owed and speaking as a member, I am sure we cannot be grateful enough to her for extending her interest beyond the active chapter to the alumnae associations.

And now in conclusion, I hope with all m y hea"rt that your prosperity and well being as a sorority may long continue and perhaps the best I can wish you, is that the fri endships that are formed and matured during your active membership may last as long and be fraught with as much pleasure and happiness as has been the case among your charter members.

Sorority Activities Alpha Chapter Alpha Chapter has always been unusually active in Y. W. C. A.

work. One year four out of the six delegates sent to the Y. W. C. A. convention at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, were members of Alpha Sigma Tau and last year two of the delegates to the International Student Volunteer Convention were sisters, Carrie Washburne and Gwendolyn McLaughlin . Two of our girls, Helen Larkin and Marjorie Upton, are making Y. W. C. A. their life work. Several of our girls have held the president's office in this association, Carrie Wahsburne being president last year and Hilda Schweir this year. Many girl s have held cabinet positions and with the exception of a very few years our sorority has had 100 per cent Y. W. C. A. membership .

As one of our aims is general culture every year we endeavor to take up something in literary work or studies in parliamentary law. Al so we have always done something along the line of charity work. As an illustration, during the war and for some time after the sorority upported two French orphans. From year to year we have helped

the Y. W. C. A. in some way .

Scholarship, another cardinal point of the sisterhood, has been strongly emphasized , two girls maintaining "A" standings throughout this year and eight or ten having between an "A" and a " B" standing. Two years Alpha Chapter girls held three of the highest honors at graduation. In 1922 Allura Exelby was valedictorian, Doris Gorsuch, salutatorian and Ola Hiller was Training School representative. In 1924 Carrie Washburne was va ledictorian, B. Iva Woodford, representative of Pease auditoriu·m and Wanda Crawford, representative of the Main building. Several of our girls are in the honorary national scholastic society, Kappa Delta Pi.

Two of our sisters were chosen for the Normal College faculty this year. Wanda Crawford is assistant referen ce librarian and Janice Austin is a member of the Conservatory faculty .

The fall rushing season of the AI pha Chapter opened with a MahJong and dancing party on Friday, October 24, at the sorority house. The guests were received by a small Chinese girl , who presented each one with a "queue cap ." Unique incense burners were awarded the highest scorers. The next was a formal tea held at the sorority house on Sunday afternoon. While tea was being served a cycle of vio lin solos was given.

The rushing season closed with a Goblin's Frolic on the last night of October amid the weird and mystic surroundings of Hallowe'en. On Saturday, November 1, the final party, a five-course dinner, was served at the Huron Hotel. Baby Mums formed the decorations of the table

and a candy corsage was placed at each plate . Soon after f ourteen girl s accepted Alpha Sigma Tau's invitation and were given the ribbon service and were pledged.

Two of Many Pledge Stunts The foll owing was composed for my "Most Wo rthy Superior,"

J anet Owen, in answer to her question, "Why is the water so near the shore?"

Once upon a time, man y, many years ago there lived a beautiful maiden. She was the mo t lovely maid in the whole world . Thi s beautiful girl 's name was Owen. Every day Owen had a new lover, but none ever touched the spot in her heart she kept o ca refull y locked and guarded. But one clay a handsome Prince Charming came and thi s beautiful maiden unl ocked the secret chamber and gave it untouched to him. But the Prince (very much like all 1924 Princes) was fi ckl e <~ nd did not deserve the love that was given to him. But it took our beautiful Princess a long time to find it out. When she did, her heart was broken and the whole world grieved because they thought she never would live.

Then one night a fairy appeared to wipe away littl e Owen's teams. Trying to consol e her she said, " Whatever you wish will be granted yo u." And her wish was that she be turned into glittering sands and her Prince into sparkling water so that they ever would be near each other even though he did not love her.

By "a worm of the dust." (Eloi e Webs ter) .

Our pl edges of the f all term composed the foll owing song to be sung to the tune " Bl ossom Time :" Yo u are our sisters dear, Alpha Sigma Tau ; We tand fo r faithfuln e s No w and f orever ; True to you we will a 1 ways be, P ledged to our dear sorority, The green and gold we wi ll ever love; Always obey thy laws, AI ph a Sigma Tau.

THE A . N C H 0 R

The second week-end in November the girl s at the orority hou e attended a house party at the home of Helen Hands in Lansing. Friday evening they attended the annual barbecue of Michigan State College. Saturday morning they spent sight-seeing and shopping. In the afternoon the football game at the college was the center of interest and in the evening they were the guests of the Columbia Fraternity at their house in East Lansing.

Several of our girls attended the winter party of the Theta chapter given January 16 in the beautiful Crystal Ballroom of the new BookCadillac hotel , Detroit.

For our spring rushing we had an informal buncho party at the AI pha Sigma Tau house and a St. Patrick's theatre party at which we all went to see "North of 36." After the entertainment we went to the sorority house where the girl s served light refreshments. We had planned to give a breakfast at " The Maples." However , beca use of Mrs. Lyman's serious illness we decided not to do so . Just recentl y we gave a wiener roast and a bridge party. We have pledged six lovely girl s, Norma Carl, Marie Brogan, Grace Bravendar, Helen Rya n, Florence Schmid and Maud Styckle.

Virginia Bonser left May 8 for Egypt, where she will join her parents, Professor and Mrs. Bonser of Columbia University, with whom she will travel through Europe and other countries. Tuesday evening before she left the girls gave a dinner in her honor at the Huron Hotel and presented her with a hammered silver compact with A. S. T. ms1gma.

Carri e Washburne has been chosen president of the Alumnae Association of the Y. W. C. A. While here in school Carrie was president of the Y. W. C. A. and was very prominent in organizing the Alumnae Association. She was also assistant editor of the "Aurora" (the college annual publication ) and was elected editor-in-chief of same for this year. .

At our winter initiation banquet held at the Huron Hotel January 24, Dean Lydia Jon es and assistant, Dean Fannie E. Beal , were gues ts of honor. Margaret Ash-Evans of Cincinnati acted as toastmistress. The following " radi o" program was given:

What some of Alpha Chapter, Sigma Tau, Girls have done or are doing

The following brief notes may serve to show their vari ed activities, though many not mentioned have done equall y interesting and important things.

Of the group who became Alpha Sigma Taus in 1905 wa Mary Ella Wil son, a most successful fifth g rade critic teacher in the Michigan State ormal College for many years and who in 1924 became one of the staff of the Geography Department in the same college. Miss Wilson has clone graduate work in Cornell University a nd also in the University of Michigan , where she received her A.M. degree. This ummer she spends abroad, where she has a I ready traveled ex tensive) y.

In Highl and P a rk, Mich. Juni or High School we are repre en ted by Lina J. Ward , who received her A.B. from the . of M. This year she chaperoned a pa rty of student who spent their Eas ter vaca tion in Wa hington, D. C.

THE ANCH O R

Possibly no Alpha Sigma Tau has had a more varied experience than has Mildred Shafer-Young. Immediately after leaving college she entered the State War and Navy Department at Washington, D. C After the war she did work among the illiterate soldiers. Associated as she was with army people her friend s were not surprised when she married a U. S. Army Officer, Lieutenant Nevins Dorsey Young. Three months of their honeymoon was spent traveling abroad. On their return he was stationed at Camp Jackson, South Carolina and later at Camp Eustis, Virginia. They are now located at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippine I slands.

Grace Gibson-Saunders, while in Ypsilanti , was elected a member at the Stoic Society and won the " Strong" scholarship, an honor much coveted by the best students. For two summers foll owing her graduation she was invited and accepted a position to teach in the summer schoo l of the Michigan State ormal College. Then she went to Leland Stanford to study. There she met and married Commander Harold E. Saunders, U. S. Navy, then stationed at Mare Island. Later on he was transferred to Washington, D. C., and now is at Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The work of Cynthia Dodge-Crawford, clas of 1918, is quite unusual. Music and art were her special interests in coll ege. Since then she has carried on these interests by writing operettas. F our, " Let's Go Traveling," " What's the Matter with Sally?', " Day Before Ye, terday" (Historical ) and " Rainbow's End," have been copyrighted and

published by a Philadelphia company. She not only wrote the words and music of these, but also illustrated them and designed the cover s. She has two or three others ready for publication. A former Dean of the College, Bessie Leach Priddy, said of her, "She is one of the bes t

· all around girls I have ever known." Among the more recent Sigma Tau girls who have been prominent

and won honors on the Campus are Allura Exelby, who was a Stoic, valedictorian of her class and a member of Kappa Delta Pi and during three years in college kept up an "A" average. Next year she will be at the Martha Cook Dormitory, University of Michigan, doing degree work.

Grace Braddock, class of 1919, spent last year at Caney Creek settlement in Kentucky, doing mission work among the mountaineers. She is so enthusiastic about the work that she hopes to return to it soo n.

Ola Hiller was a member of Pi Kappa Delta, the National Forensic ::lociety, and since teaching has made a great success with her students along oratorical lines. She has done some work towards a degree at the University of Michigan and returns here to finish next year.

Many of our members have been chosen to the Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Educational Society.

Virginia Johns after leaving college took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar and has been practicing in Detroit for several years.

Katherine Bergegrun, while here in college, specialized in physica l training, had charge of playground work in Detroit for some time after, went to California where she studied in the University of California for a time and then took up the study of medicine at the University of Michigan and afterwards continued her medical course in Phi ladelphia, where she graduates this yea r.

Marion Whipple-Cameron, who was a music student while here in college, has a most beautiful voice and sang in churches here and in Detroit during her college days. She is now in Iew York in the studi o of Herbert Witherspoon, where she is continuing her musical studies besides being solo contralto in the quartette of the fam ous Brick Presbyterian Church of Fifth avenue.

Carrie Washburne, who g raduated in the 1924 class, carried off about all the honors in coll ege. She was valedictorian of her clas , president of the Y. W. C. A., vice-president of the Women' League. Y. W. C. A. repre entative on tudent Council, member of Management Committee of Kollege Komedy, member of Minerva Literar Club an l

feren ce at Indianapolis, a member of Stoic Society - the honorary sophomore scholastic club- and with all this maintained a scholarship standing between an "A" and " B" . This year she was instrumental in forming a Y. W. C. A. Alumnae Association, of which she was chosen president. She is making a most successful teacher in the Detroit schools and expects to return to us for degree work very soon.

Eleanor Meston, Esther Diehl and Theodora Quick are to he at Columbia University next year doing degree work.

As the directory shows, our alumnae are sca ttered throughout more than twenty-five states and there are some in foreign co untries.

T h e HistoJry of the Zeta Cha pteJr of Alpha Sigma Tau

T HE ZETA chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority was organized in Central State ormal School, Lock Haven, Pa_, in April , 1921.

Miss Geraldine Lockhart was appointed adviso r by the principal , Warren . Drum. There were just nine charter members. Mrs. Lyman and Mrs. Mahaney of the mother chapter of Ypsilanti , Michigan, came to Lock Haven April 7, to organize the sorority.

When it was learned that more than one faculty member was allowed, Miss Ruth Stewart and Miss Mable Doyle were taken in. Mrs. Roy S. McDougall was chosen at the same time as an honorary member. Before the end of that fir t year six more girls were invited to become members of Zeta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau.

The following fall Miss Stewart and Miss Doyle accepted positions in other school s so Miss J essie Scott Himes and Miss Charl eton Locke were invited to become members of the sorority. Since Miss Locke was a member of a national sorority she became an honorar y member.

On ovember 8, 1921, ten more girl s were initiated and a banquet was held in their honor. In February three more girls were invited to join.

The first annual banquet was held at the ew Fall on Hotel on April 29, 1922. In May another girl was initiated and two were pl ed~ed . This year was closed with a sorority picnic.

During the school year of 1922-23, fourteen more girls became members. In November of thi year the first circulating letter was sent.

In the fall of 1923 Mrs. Ca rroll All , the wife of one of the faculty members, was invited to become an honorary members and Mrs. McDougall was made a patroness. Eleven girl s became members al so. A great many parties and feeds were given during the year. One of the most interesting of these was a Chri stmas party which is now an annual affair.

The third annual ba nquet was held on April 5, 1924. Thirty-three alumnre and active members attended. The activities of that year culmin ated in an indoor picnic, held in the sorority r oom . One girl was pledged and wa initi ated the foll owing fall.

Thi bring u up to the p re ent year of 1924-25. A number of ru hing feed and pa rtie we re given. Eleven girl ac epted bids and b came m mber of the so rority. Th a nnual lui tma part , which in luded a Chri tma. tree, presents and at , wa h ld in the ro ms.

In February bids were issued to four more girl s who accepted, survived initiation and became members. On March 14, the fourth annual banquet was held at the New Fall on HoteL It was a pleasure to have so many alumnre back. There were fifty-two present. For the first time in the history of Zeta chapter, guests were present. Mr. Drum, who will leave the school April l , 1925, spoke on the subj ect of " Loyalty."

A word may be said here about what Zeta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau does for C. S. N. S. Every year it prints and pays for the " Hand Book of Rules," which is given to every student who enters our schooL Circulating letters which keep alumnre members actively interested in the school are part of a loyalty campaign for our schooL Sorority members have been chosen to address groups of High School students in the interests of Central State. Individual members are actively engaged in the school's campaign for larger enrollment of good students. In addition to these a sorority pledge of real support and a llegiance to student government has been sent to Mr. Drum.

The total enrollment of the sorority at present includes twenty-two active members, two patronesses, one faculty member , four honorary members and 51 alumnre. Briefl y this sums up the four years of enj oyment and work which have been the privilege of members of Zeta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau. EDNA FITZSIMMON S.

"My Prayer"

Twilight steals o'er all the land, Shadows flicker over all;

Time for vespers and I'll give A prayer for Alpha Sigma Tau.

May she always be as virtuous In the future, as of yore;

May the ties which bind us to her Grow within us more and more.

Help us, Lord, to keep our pl edges Now, and in the future, too ;

So that we may all be worthy Alpha Sigma Tau, of you.

The Zeta Chapter Activities

With the beginning of each yea r the question of getting acq uainted. findin g new fri ends, and finall y the hurry and excitement of ru shing parties keep everyone thrilled. This year, in keeping with a new faculty ruling, rushing parties were not given until the end of the ninth week of school. However , every girl likes meeting, in a very informa l way, other new girl s. Feeds with boxes from home, and trips down town to our favorite confectionery were enj oyed.

As soo n as it was possible we had our first " real feeds" whi ch were attended by a large number of fri ends. Later as we grew more sure of characteristics, the number of persons invited graduall y grew smaller, so that we became better acquainted. Formal walks and informal hikes he I ped cement these ties. Toward the end of the ·ushing season one big affair was given, that the girl s whom we felt we wanted might have a better chance to know a bit of the ideal s for which we stand. A progressive dinner and theater party gave us this oppottunity. Fruit

cocktail s were the first course and were served in our president's room before we went to the matinee. The dinner proper was held at the home of Mrs. l cDougall. In the evening we all returned to the gym, for our regular Saturday dance. At ten o'clock the final course was served in the secretary's room.

An informal , but jolly Christma party, held in our rooms, closed 1924 for us.

March 14, the day for our annual banquet, brought with it man y alumnre who showed us what Alpha Sigma Tau means to them. The topic of the banquet program was " Loyalty." This was touched on from the viewpoint of the school, the sorority, the alumnre and self. Dr. Drum, who has been our principal for four years, was our guest at this banquet. We regret the loss of this loyal friend of Zeta chapter.

Sunday morning we had open house for a ll fri ends who could drop in between church services for just a friendl y cha t.

April 3 we had a pre-Easter party and celebrated Mary Dietrick's birthday. April 18 the Juniors gave a party to the Seniors. The Seniors gave a return party on April 25.

Spring picni cs are the usual end of sorority activities at Central State, and 1925 promises to yield the same fun .

History of Alpha Sigma Tau, Theta Chapter

ON May 5, 1923, eight girls journeyed out to Ypsilanti and became charter members of the Theta Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. These girl s were Janet Owen, Dorothy

Dykstra, Katherine Guinness, Gladys Cathro, Helen Hilton, Margaret Walters, Carol MacKelcan and Helen Juers. We were initiated at the Masonic Temple and later entertained with a dinner at the Huron Hotel. So this was the beginning. We journeyed back to Detroit and from thence on started our work.

Our first step towards organization was obtaining as our patroness Mrs. Henry C. Walters, and our Alumni Adviser, Miss Edith Mansell. Our next step was getting new members; after a few meetings and several rush parties, we selected six girls who made up our first group of initiates. They were : Sall y Bean, Beatrice Graham, Ruth Howarn, Elizabeth Howes, Gertrude O'Mail ey and Helen O'Mailey. Having added these girl s to our chapter we were very much strengthened and started forth again for new members. At our second initiation, which was in the spring of 1924, we initiated Hilda Aston, Ljllian Davies, Lillian J ohnson and Bertha Juers. The third initiation was held in the summer of 1924, and here we added three more sisters : Lucille Lang, Hazel Gardner and Marj orie Hitchcock.

After a pl easant summer vacation we girls gathered together again and made plans for increasing our membership. We held our pl edging ceremony in the fall of 1924 and pledged Marion Brooks, Eleanor Ed wards, Dorothy Kean, Dorothy Davy, Katherine Butler and Ruth Nielson. Later on in the winter, after these girls haa served their pl edge time, we initiated them. Adding these last initiates to our chapter it brings our membership up to twenty-eight members.

Sorority Activities Our first social event was a Bridge Luncheon given to us by our

patroness, Mrs. Henry C. Walters, at the Detroit Golf Club, in May, 1923. The next event was a Bridge Breakfast a t the Woman 's Exchange, at which the members entertained their fir st group of pledges. Later these pledges entertained the members with a delightful luncheon at the Dixieland.

Our very fir st undertaking was a Charity Bridge at the home of Elizabeth Howes on Dexter Blvd., the proceeds being given toward the Teachers' College Scholarship Fund. An other plea ant gathering was a pot-luck supper, given by Miss E. Mansell, our Alumni Adviser, at her home on Highland Ave., Highland Park.

During the summer months we enj oyed ourselves at two delightful house parties; one at the summer home of Ruth Howarn, at Hi ckory Island, Grosse Isle, and another at Dorothy Dykstra's at Cass Lake. On January 16, we gave a Charity Dance at the Book-Cadillac Hotel , which was a tremendous success. The last social activity listed on our calendar was a delightful Bridge Luncheon a t the Palmetto Hotel, where the pledges entertained the members.

History of Iota Chapter

O UR local organization was first known as Delta Gamma Rho. We organized on November ll , 1920, with fifteen girls as charter memb~rs. The first yea r our sorority ranked hrst in

scholarship, and we placed fir st in the annual stunt contest. Several of our girls have been recognized in Zeta Kappa Psi, the national honorary forensics fraternity, others have been elected to Kappa Delta Pi, national honorary scholarship fraternity.

On April 4, 1923, Delta Gamma Rho became the I ota Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority. Mrs. E. A. Lyman of Ypsilanti, Michigan, installed the chapter and intiated the officers a t the home of our sponsor, Miss Jane K. Atwood. Two weeks later another initiation service was held at which time the remaining members of Delta Gamma Rho were initiated into Alpha Sigma Tau. To date, fifty-six girls have signed the Alpha Sigma Tau Constitution.

This year we had twenty-seven active members. The year has been an interesting one in our working together, both in our work and in our play. Among the social affairs that were en joyed were: Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine, fud ge, line and card parties, as well as our annual spring party and other informal house dances which were given at various times. Besides these, our sponsors and patronesses entertainments for rushees must be given between 8 o'cl~ck in the morn-

We are going to have another successful yea r, for we have already begun to plan our work f or next winter. We have our rush week programs made out. Perhaps you would be interested in knowing something of our rush week plans and the ru sh week rules on our campus. We are governed by P an-hellenic rules, one which states that all of our entertainments for rmhes must be given between 8 o'clock in the morning and 8 o'clock at night. Girls only are permitted to attend any sorority rush week affair. Also, if any organization violates any of the Pan-hellenic rul es and if the offense is considered serious, a penalty of $10 is laid upon such organization. For rush week we have pJanned a buffet breakfast at the Sorority House; a dinner dance at the Country Club; a ca rd party; a line party; a fi sh-fry and a tea.

We congratulate Alpha Sigma Tau in its progressive step and we renew our pledge of loyalty and willingness of service to AI pha Sigma Tau. Fraternally yours,

Hist ory of Kappa Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau

M IAMI University for many years has been called a " Greek letter" school. The fraternities are many in number, and it has been Miami's privilege to organize and found the AI pha

Chapters of several of the biggest national Academic and Education fraternities. There was one outstanding weakness and that was the limited number of national sorori ties f or girls in Education work. Realizing this need, a brave band of energetic and courageous girl s decided to organize anothe r educational sorority. These girls were greatl y encouraged and aided by the faculty, especiall y by Dean Min· nich of the T eachers' College and Dr. W. H. Shideler of the Geology Department.

In spite of the many discouragements that are bound to come in such a large undertaking, these pioneers of our organiza tion went steadil y on toward their goal - that of becoming. a well recognized Greek letter so rority. The preliminary organizing occurrred in Septem· her 1922, and in October of that same year the girl s chose the name Alpha Kappa Gamma for their sorority. Mrs. Minnich gave a lovely tea for the girl s and invited a representative f rom each of the other sororities. This little social gathering aided much in the recognition of Alpha Kappa Gamma on the campus.

The charter members were : Margaret Mark with, Virginia Moorman, Thelma Rieck, Margaret F reeman, Esther Lantz, Frances Jackson and Thelma Fox, who later withdrew her membership. In her absence Mary Klepinger was made a charter member. The girl s soon succeeded in pl edging ten other girl s and began to feel that they were rapidl y accomplishing things.

Dr. Shideler and Gerald Kl einkenecht, both members of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, wrote a beautiful ritual for the new Alpha Kappa Gamma, which has been their constant inspiration. A badge was then chosen to bear the Alpha Kappa Gamma insigna . It was a bl ack enameled shield bea ring the Greek letters A. K. P. and set in crossed torches of go ld, jewelled with pearls-the fl ame rising from the two torches above the shield. The pledge pins were the Greek letters in sil ver.

The girls soon realized that onl y through nationaliza tion could they atta in the best results an dso the ybegan to think of a possible Univer· sity or College for the installation of the second chapter of A. K . f . Through much correspondence and inquiry it was discovered that Ohio University al so needed more Education sororities. The gir ls sent representatives from the sorority to investigate the situation at Athens and they had the good fortune to secure a group who were interested

in Alpha Kappa Gamma. They were organized as a small club with officers, and in the spring of 1922 Beta chapter of Alpha Kappa Gamma was installed.

During year of 1922 Alpha Kappa Gamma turned her attention toward being an entity on the campus. Many breakfasts and hikes were enjoyed and there were teas and banquets held . Our final social attempt, however, was our Spring formal da nce, which was acclaimed a great success by all the other so rorities and fraternities. We had by this time initiated Mrs. Schlider as our honorary member, and to her we owe a great deal of our success in every way.

We found at this p oint in our career that nationalization by our own expansion was to be a long and tedious process, so we became interested in affi liating with another Greek letter sorority that wa either national or in near view of it. At this time Mrs. Lyman and Mrs. Evans visited us in the interest of Alpha Sigma Tau. We were so well pleased with the positi on an dstandards of A. E . T. that we began to consider joining them and relinquishing our name of Alpha Kappa Gamma. By a special called meeting we decided to accept A. E. T. and also asked our Beta chapter to become a part of us. The girl s, having in June, 1924, were initiated and install ed as Kappa Chapter but other plans, decided to remain A. K. f. for the present.

We are, indeed, very proud to be call ed Kappa chap ter of Alpha Sigma Tau, and ar eglad to be using our energy and initiative toward the greatness and glory of our beloved.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN NORMAL SCHOOL OF MT. PLEASANT, MICH.

History of Beta Chapter

MANY beautiful things originate almost spontaneously. Some years ago a group of girl s of Central Michigan Normal School, of Mt. Pleasant, felt the impul se to be more closely banded

together. Much talk and many plans followed. A few others were invited to enter the group. One of the Faculty wives was invited to become patroness. Le tters were exchanged with the AI pha chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau at Ypsilanti. Then Miss Ada Norton, patroness, and two student members of the Alpha chapter journeyed to us one April day and the result was the birth of the Beta chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority on April 28, 1905, with Mrs. Claude S. Larzelere as patroness, and seventeen members, three of whom were members of the faculty.

From 1905 to 1917 we prospered. Every year saw an added group of splendid girl s, until our alumnae numbered over one hundred and sixty members. The number of patronesses was also increased by Mrs. John Kelley and Miss M. Louise Connerse first, and when they felt it necessary to resign becau se of other duties, Mrs. K. P. Brooks joined us.

Who will ever forget the initiation banquets of many intricate courses served at Mrs. Gorham's, or the annual dance with the best

music to be had ? However, much to our disappointment, the faculty of our school decided to banish all secret societies, and in the sp ring of 1917 we were forced to disband. Many of the girl s have kept in touch with each other through the alumnae groups or correspondence, but there are many, also, who often wonder where their old friends are. These girl s will be particularly interested in having thi direc tory and magazine. There is not space here to give all the interesting new we have picked up about our girl s, but in the next magazine we will be able to give man y items that will bring you once more into close touch with your friends of the good old days at the ormal. If yo u have any news about yourself or others, send it on.

History of Gamma Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau

T HE Gamma Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau was organized in 1909 at State -ormal School, Milwaukee, Wis., with ten charter

· members, and Mrs. Walter Hewitt Cheever as Patroness. The Chapter continued with enthusiasm until 1913 when the School Faculty voted to abolish fraternities and sororities. Since that time the members of the Chapter have kept in close sisterl y touch, meeting irregularly, but always with growing affection for their sisterhood, and still holding the hope of some day seeing the Gamma Chapter once more active in the school.

HistoJry of the Delta ChapteJr of the Alpha Sigma Tau SoJroJrity

of Indiana State NoJrmal School

0 N Saturday, May 27th, 1916, the Delta chapter of the Alpha

Sigma Tau Sorority held its fir st meeting in the Y. W. C. A. room of the State Normal School at Indiana, Pennsylvania.

The meeting was called to order, officers were nominated and the result of the election was as fo ll ows :

Miss Gl adys Bowen Miss Alice Kane Miss Eliza l saman Miss Clare Cover Miss Mary Arbuckle Miss Bertha Sta tl er

The meeting was adj ourned to attend a reception given by the Delta Sigma Epsilon Sorority a t the See Cottage.

The two patronesses chosen by the Delta chap ter were Miss Araminta M. McLane and Miss Mary St. Clair King. ·

The next in order was to have cushions and banne·rs which were purchased through the No rmal Book Room.

The secretary wrote to the Alpha chapter for pledge pins. These were received and the business of " rushing" began. P arties were in order. The result of our fir st effort was the taking in of fi ve girls.

The first time the Delta chapter was reall y noticed was when our write-up was put into the " lnstano," the year book of the school. We

were then invited to join the Pan-Hellenic meetings held in the school. During the year 1917 we were asked to do a lot of things. We fur

nished a bed in a Base Hospital. A $50.00 Liberty Bond was bought. We knit an Ambulance robe. Dr. John A. H . Keith, principal of the Normal , asked us to make the school a Service Flag, which we did. It was quite a task but everybody worked hard and when completed there were over two hundred stars, triangles (blue and red ,) red crosses and six gold stars. When the flag was fini shed it was presented to the school by Dr. Keith and was accepted by Miss Jane E. Leonard, Dean of Women, now deceased. The flag is hung in the school for every patriotic occasion and we of the school are very proud of it.

The year 1918 was a busy one. We were having a time " rushing" as many of the girls went horne to take positions left by the boys going into the camps and across. We continued our parties and kept up our war work. We sold our Liberty Bond to the Savings and Trust Bank. With the money we bought a French Orphan. We received a picture of the little girl , who was only six years old. She had lived in France all her life and her name was ALICE.

The Sorority carried on during the year 1919 and finall y, at the end of the school year, the Pan-Hellenic had a meeting in which it was moved and seconded that all sororities of the sch ool be abolished becau se of expense and it was not democratic to "carry on" during the war.

Delta chapter has an Alumnae chapter in Pittsburgh, P ennsylvania, and our work still continues.

History of Epsilon Chapter

IT WAS in December of 1918 that two or three girls talked over

the possibility of establishing a chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau Fraternity in Temple University, Philadelphia, P a. A committee

was appointed to select who might be interested in going f orwa rd. In January of 1919 a group of girl s met at 1918 orth Broad St.

and decided to establish the chapter. In a few days they met to organize and to elect officers. A petition was sent to the faculty council through Dr. Laura Carnell and permission was granted to this g roup of girls to establi sh a chapter by the Dean and Council.

On February 14 th, 1919, the Epsil on Chapter was established. Two girls were sent from the AI ph a Chapter to pledge and initiate this group of ei~ht girl s and one fa culty advi~er , which was foll owed by a banquet and theatre party.

With this chapter of pleased and enthusiastic girls we launched out to make Epsilon Chapter a success and stand out among others to do something worth while for our University and fell ow workers. We grew and were very successful under many difficulties for four years.

The Epsilon girls whose names do not appear in this directory will have an opportunity to have name and address placed in the next issue if sent to Business Manager.

History of AI ph a Grand Rapids Sigma Tau Alumnae

"Should auld acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?

We'll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne."

T WO years ago, a group of Alpha Sigma Taus, convinced of the worthwhileness of the sentiment thus expressed by the Scottish bard, decided to renew old fri endships. Having arrived at that

decision , they arranged for a luncheon at Hotel Rowe with Mrs. Effie Lyman, our chief patroness, as honor guest. Old coll ege days were discussed and rainbow plans laid for the future of Alpha Sigma Tau . To fa cilitate matters, an organization was immediately affected with the following officers in charge: President, Mary E. Harding; Secretary, Lila Lawrence-Full er, and Treasurer, Louise Glade-Bohlen.

The next spring Miss· Harding arranged for a luncheon in the pri vate dining room of the Y. W. C. A. The sorority green and gold of the decorations brought vividl y back to us our experiences as undergraduates. After the luncheon, we adj ourned to the home of our pres ident for cards and mah-jongg.

The next meeting was the picnic in Garfield Park. Though but few

were present, the occasion proved a fine opportunity for talking over the happy hours of days gone by.

Several months later, Mrs. S. A. Muhlhauser was hos tess at a buffet luncheon, given to all members of the Theta Alumnae chapter. Since that time Mrs. Muhlhauser has moved to Detroit and has become an active member of the Alpha Alumnae chapter.

The last formal meeting was held during the Teachers' Convention in Grand Rapids. At that time, Miss Harding arranged for a charming luncheon at Robinwood, with Mrs. Effie Lyman and Mi~s Ada Norton as honor gues ts. Several members were present wh o find it difficult to attend the usual meetings. Again officers were elected, thi s time with Mrs. Louise Glade-Bohlen as president ; Mrs. Emma French-Quigley, secretary, and Miss Lillian Griffin , treasurer.

During the past few months there have been no "get-to-gethers' ' of any kind, the only co ntacts being between the individual members. Despite this lack of formal meetings, deep down in each girl 's heart there is a true, abiding love f or Alpha Sigma Tau. Life should be rich in friendships and, somehow, those of youth seem happiest and most abiding. Someone has said that our friendships should be kept in constant repair. Let us say, rather, that they should be kept unmarred and ever-growing. Keep the old and make the happy acquisition of new ones; well-chosen, rich and true.

It is a great pl easure to the old members of Alpha Sigma Ta u to meet the newer members of the sorority, and to know that the upbuilding, character-making principles for which we stand have been handed on and on until our fraternal circle is now considered worthy of national recognition.

May we prosper. May each active chapter choo=e always to the glory of its Alma lVIater, and to the sa ti sfa ction and honor of our beloved patronesses, who have made our fraternal existence possibl e.

History of Delta Alumni

T HE Alumni of the Delta Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority met s ome time during the fall of 1916 to organize an Alumni Sorority chapter so that they might be a part and stand loya l

to their active chapter. These girl s met once a month to consider and work out plans to help their chapter and Sorority to higher and nobler ideal s. This, mingled with a social hour, had the effect of sealing and binding these friend ships in closer bonds, but the interes t lessened after the active chapter went out of existence in 1920 and since there has not been much incentive to work and go forward.

It is a pleasure to report that now these girl s have renewed their interest and we hope that it is onl y a very short time until we will have a flourishin g alumni chapter in the Pittsburgh district, and in this way we can wel come all girl s who are affiliated with other chapters.
