"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,

the beginning and the end." -- Revelation 22:13

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Because Stephen professes his faith in the Son of Man, he is stoned to death (Acts 7:55-60). Psalm - The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth (Psalm 97). Second Reading - I, the Alpha and the Omega, am coming soon (Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20). Gospel - Father, I pray that they may all be one, as you and I are one, that they may be brought to perfection (John 17:20-26).

LIVING GOD’S WORD Today’s readings offer us different reasons to

pray: for the unity of all believers, for Jesus to receive our spirit at the end of our life, for the ability to forgive any who have done us harm, and for Jesus to come at the end of our days with a reward for our good deeds.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD The late Paul Harvey was famous for his stories

on the radio. He would tell only part of a story, then announce that, after the commercials, he would be back with “the rest of the story.” Then he would come back with a surprising or satisfying wrap-up. The word of God reminds us that, no matter what has already happened in our lives or what will happen in future days, God will provide us “the rest of the story.”

John does not have Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane but at the Last Supper. Jesus prays to the Father for his disciples and for all who will hear their words about him. He prays that all may be one. The ending that God has planned for all who believe in Jesus is that we enter into unity with Jesus and the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Today we also witness the end of the story of one of the first preachers of the gospel, Stephen the deacon. As he was being stoned, he prayed that the Lord Jesus receive his spirit and that those stoning him be forgiven. The end of his story on this earth echoes the final words of Jesus on the cross in Luke’s Gospel.

Finally, the author of Revelation holds up an image of Jesus as the beginning and the end of the human story. He will return at the end of time and bring a recompense that he “will give to each according to [our] deeds” (Revelation 22:12). At the end, then, is God’s plan for unity, forgiveness, and glory. And that’s the rest of the story.

REVISITING OUR BAPTISM A mere seven weeks ago thousands of new

Church members were baptized. Their new life in Christ has once again infused new life into the Church. Their new-found faith has inspired and bolstered the faith of those who have followed Christ for many years. As the Easter season nears its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms. In the second reading we hear Christ calling us: "Come. . . . Let . . . the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water" (Revelation 22:17).

But our baptism is not one of water only. John refers to washed robes, and we know that this washing is to be "in the blood of the Lamb." To make sure we get this message, we have today's first reading from Acts. It is the story of Stephen, the first Christian to be killed for his faith in Jesus. We remember the promise and also the cost of being a disciple of Christ.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Second Vatican Council decreed that the

devotional life of the Church should be examined and reformed with an eye towards expressing Easter faith. This encouragement for creativity has deep roots in our tradition, and some attempts at reform show great promise. One of the great treasures in our devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of Lent: the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path recalling the events of

Christ's passion, a contemplative experience increasingly enriched these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen stations in the usual configuration, although in recent years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a similar journey structured on the theme of the appearances of the Risen Lord?

Over the last decade, a Via Lucis, or "Way of Light," has developed as a companion to the Via Crucis. It has been celebrated at the Vatican and is catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the Women Carrying Spices to the Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the Apostles' wait with Mary for the advent of the Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers, and liturgists. This is a living example of how many of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It may even come soon to a church near you. Maybe next Eastertime!

Dlatego Kosciół wiedziony Jego Duchem nie przestaje od samego swojego początku pracować i cierpieć za jedność w świecie. Dla niej misjonarze tracą swoją ojczyznę i życie, d1a niej kapłani wyrzekają sie ciepła życia rodzinnego i z jej powodu liczni czlonkowie Kościoła decydują się, na samotność...

Całe ich życie, wszystkie ich pace i wysiłki są jakby jednym wielkirn powtarzaniem słów Pana: ,Aby wszyscy byli jedno!"

Prawdziwego ucznia Chrystusa boli dlatego każdy spór, nienawiść, każdy zatarg między ludźmi, zwłaszcza ten, którego sam jest przyczyną.

Kiedy sumienie wyrzuca nam taki grzech, uciszamy je powołując się na najrozmaitsze racje. Na przykład: My nie możemy być jedno ... Jesteśmy przecież zwolennikami dwóch bloków o przeciwnych poglądach ... Należyrny do dwóch narodów, żyjemy w zastarzałym sporze historycznym. Jakże możemy być zgodni, kiedy granica, która dla mnie jest północną, dla niego jest południowa ... Jestem katolikiem ... a on nie jest ... O czym możemy ze sobą rozmawiać? On mnie obraził, ja jemu darowałem, ale odtąd nie rozmawiamy ze sobą, aby nie popaść w nową kłótnie.

Czy to ma być owa jednosc, o która przez łzy pożegnania prosił Jezus Chrystus swojego Ojca? ..

Jeśli tak przekręcamy Jego słowa i tak wypełniamy Jego testament, bójmy się Jego sądu ... !
