Early Life
Had Four Kids Lorenzo and Sarah died young Rutherford was the youngest out of the four Dad died three months before he was born Rutherford and his family had a hard time his because his
dad and two of his siblings died. Stayed home with his mom and brother In 1836 he went to Norwalk, Ohio to speak and write in
Greek and Latin His childhood was very busy from learning Greek and Latin. Went back to Ohio to go to College He was educated. Rutherford went to Preparatory School in
Middle Town, Connecticut. Also for college he attended Kenyon College.
Family Life
Got married on December 30th, 1852 Rutherford got married to Lucy Ware
Webb. Had 8 kids 3 kids died when they were young Survivors were Bircherd, Webb,
Rutherford, Fanny , and Scott Russell Rutherford didn’t have any pets.
The Election
Election was on November 7th, 1876 Tilden got 184 votes and Rutherford got
165 votes All needs to have 185 votes to win With him was William A. Wheeler. The
person running against him was Samuel Tilden.
Had to go to Congress to determine the winner
The vote was very close.
Significant Events In Presidency
Supported Public education. It is important because today we still
have Public education.

Hayes was in the Civil War He was a great soldier Declared winner of the election in
just 56 hours before inauguration He was the Ohio Governor through
1868-181872, and 1876-1877 Volunteered to help Underground
Railways for slaves to win freedom
