Anyone not familiar with the subtl, methods of the Roman Curia may possibl~

imagine, on reading this, epistle, that i'guarantees. entirely and forever, the inviol·ability of the sacred rites and patriarchalrights of the various Christian communitiesunited to Rome, against any attempts atlatinisation or attacks on the part of papallegates and the numerous varieties of Latinpriests and monks, But is it so in reality? We will not bring out here the long seriesof historical facts which prove to evidencethe flimsiness and fallaciousness of papaldeclarations and promises even more solemnthan these, in the matter of preserving intactthe local usages, rites, and even dogmas peculiar to churches which have become "united"to the Roman Church. To become convinced of the fallaciousness of such promises, itis enough to read with attention this epistleof Pope Leo XIII, in which he, on one hand, forbids his legates and monks to interferein futU:re with the church affairs of theEastern Christian communities subject tothe papal See,-and, on the other hand, permits and' authorises those same Latinlegates and monks to conduct the educationof native children and youths~.. Anyonewho knows anyt.hing at all about the methodsof instruction followed in Latin schools willeasily see that this prohibition to monksand priests to interfere in local church aff<.lirs amounts to nothing compared to theauthority given to the same monks to conduct the schools. Who does not know thatall young people who have received theireducation in Latin schools, com 9 out ofthem more Latin than the real born Latins?'What is the SE;nse, then, of this papal epistle, when it gives into the hands of Latinpriests and monks the most important thingof all-the bringing u~ of the young generation? True, the epistle imposes upon theseLatin priests and monks the obligation tosee that those who study in their schools

mise to safeguard the rights of the UniatePtttriarchs and Bishops against any attacksor encroachments on the part of Latino·Roman legates and nuncii. But, if Pope LeoXIII has roally determined to restore andconfirm the rights of the Uniate Patriarchsand Bishops which have been trampled underfoot by his repr~sentatives in the East,--if he really considers those Patriarchsand Bishops as being such in very truth--de facto-where is the sense of his appointing any Latin Bishops and even Patriarchs at all for the Syrian communitiesunited with the Roman Church, when eachof them already has its own native Patriarch or Bishop? If all that these LatInPatriarchs and Bishops are appointed for isto look after the spiritual needs of variousforeign Catholics--German, French, Italian,etc.--residing in Syria, and not to managethe church affairs of the Uniate communities and restrict the rights and dignityof their native Patriarchs and Bishops-then those foreign Catholics, if they do notwish to be subject to the native Uniateclergy in church matters (although suchrefusal is contrary to the true Rpirit of theUnion), are free to enjoy the spiritual ministrations of the Jesuits, Franciscans, Dominicans" Capuchins, or any other of theLatin monks,-of whom' there are ten timesas many in Syria as of foreign Catholic residents, And if the monastic rules of thosenumerous orders do not allow their members to perform any ministrations for lay·men, would it not be more just for thePope to send over for t.his purpose mereLatin priests, instead of Latin Patriarchsand Bishops-if only out of respect for thedignity of the native Patriarchs and Bishops,

among many Chr'istian communities in Syria, which, notwith~tanding, are "united" withthe Roman Church. Thus for instance, someof them (the Jacobites, Armenians, Copts),hold the false doctrine of Jesus Christ'ssingle nature; others recognize two naturesin Him; some confess two wills in Christ, others (the Maronites), only one; some holdto the Nestorian doctrine on Christ (theChaldmans); others repudiate it; some a.gainaccept the addition Pilioque ("and from tIl)Son") in the Creed, while others reject it;some (the Armenians), admit the use ofunleavened bread in the Sacrament of theEucharist, while others condemn it; someapprove the marriage of priests; others forbid it; others again turn their churchesfacing the East-or the West,--or indiscriminately, North or South, etc. etc... Andin spite of all these contradictions in riteand dogma, all these communities are accounted men; bel'S of the Church of Rome, because they acknowledge the supremacy ofthe Pope over them! What is this, if not apatent proof that the Popes of Rome thinknothing either of church rites or of the fundamental Christian dogmas, in comparison withthe dogma of their own supremacy, inventedby themselves?!..

Then let the Popes write and publishas many encyclics and epistles as theyl'lease--they nevcr will be able by suchmeans to bring the East, ern Orthodox. Churchinto subjection to their authority. The 01'thodox Church was, is, and will be for' alltime the One Catholic, Holy, ApostolicChurch, against which not only the Pope'sscheming, but not the gates of hell itself, shall prevail.
