My Dear Sisters and Brothers:Grace, mercy, and peace be to you from God

the Father and our Lord JESUS Christ, who, indeed, is the Great Head of the Church and, by His power, has afforded us the privilege of coming together for another Planning Meeting.

As we gather to solidify our direction for the new conference year, we do so recognizing that during the past six months Our Zion, our District and the world have had to contend with unimaginable challenges from without and within that have necessitated unprecedented changes to the way we live and breathe. The COVID-19 pandemic has been devastating. This insidious plague has resulted in a loss of equilibrium brought on by heartbreaking deaths, unspeakable destruction and excruciating pain. It has plunged countless people throughout the global community into depression, destitution and fear of what’s to come. It has tested our faith in ways that we could never have imagined. Make no mistake about it, “(We) have not passed this way before” (Joshua 3:4).

We have no way of knowing how long we must journey in this altered reality. Coping with the unimaginable is not easy. But this we know: There is yet work to be done, despite the condition in which we find ourselves. So we have no choice but to imagine anew how to do God’s work and fulfill God’s plan in the midst of a world order that is unfamiliar and uncomfortable to us.

As we know, God has not given us a spirit of fear. So with God’s grace, faith will prevail and the needs of His people will continue to be met, even as this deadly pandemic continues on its destructive course.

“ReImagining Ministr y - Serving This Present Age” is our District’s theme for the 2020-2021 Conference Year. It means precisely what it says. For the next 12 months, we will be developing new ways of addressing the needs of God’s in the midst of a public-health crisis that has turned society upside down. Our new theme challenges us to get our creative juices flowing so that we might brainstorm new ways of doing church and transforming l ives . Our goal is for clergy and lay to engage in meaningful dialogue that will set the stage for the creation of new

ministry models that can function effectively and efficiently in a virtual or socially distanced environment.

Whether clergy or laity, God has called every believer to engage in ministry, also known as service. He has given all believers special gifts to meet the needs of His Church. It is up to us to use them as never before to His honor and glory, and to the benefit of our local congregations and communities.

I need not remind you that we are living in a peculiar and unprecedented moment in history. We have been called and challenged to renew the ministry God has given us in the midst of change. As we were reminded several months ago by Tod Bolsinger, author of Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory, “old methods will not work in this new and uncharted landscape.”

COVID-19 has forced us to reimagine our methods to make sure they continue to help us deliver the immutable message of God’s redeeming grace. If nothing else, the past six months have taught us that the way we had traditionally done ministry no longer works. Instead of worshipping in the church sanctuary, we now do so on our home computers. We have had to embrace Zoom, Facebook, YouTube and other technological advances for meetings and conferences. And on the few occasions we have needed to come together, we have done so with at least six feet between us, while wearing a covering over our noses and mouths. Without question, the way we do ministry is going to be different from now on.

The mere thought of the new order of things has been taxing and stressful. It has

weighed heavily on many of us—I know it has on me. But, ironically, it has offered us an opportunity to rethink norms, practices and possibilities. This awful virus has shown us that we must learn how to manage change. For if we don’t, change is going to manage us.

In the midst of this crisis, I am convinced that God is challenging us to redefine and reshape ministry for such a time as this. Ministry as we once knew is a thing of the past. Ministry in the future must be provided in a manner that enables us to be together—while apart. For safety reasons and health concerns, it must be offered in a way that will not allow us to do what comes natural to tactile beings and loving Christians: to kiss, to embrace, to hold hands—to simply touch. ReImagining how to minister with meaning from a distance—from six feet to infinity—is going to be challenging. But I also believe the process of reengineering how to serve in the midst of a pandemic without missing a beat is going to be exciting and rewarding. As new approaches evolve, I know they will serve to increase our faith as we move toward becoming a Church that is prepared to carry out the mandates of Scripture, no matter what.

Based on a number of conversations I have had with clergy, missionaries, lay members, young people and, in particular, Rev. Jessica, our most capable Supervisor, God has laid upon my heart five areas to focus on, as we implement our theme, “ReImagining Ministry - Serving This Present Age.” Once a month, on a Thursday evening, there will be virtual meetings consisting of a seminar, followed by time to share information among ourselves in preparation for the work ahead.

The five focus areas are below: I. JusticeII. The Virtual ChurchIII. Re Imagining MinistryIV. The Wounded HealersV. The Church Under Construction

Details on the significance of each area and how it fits in with our 12-month plan will be forthcoming.

In addition to the Thursday seminars, there will be MIRACLE MONDAYS. Every first Monday of the month, we are expecting at least 1,000 presiding elders, pastors, preachers, evangelists, missionaries, lay members and young people of the First Episcopal District to join us on the prayer line to hear a word from the Lord and to pray together for divine healing, deliverance and direction.

It is our prayer that you will be enlight-ened, transformed and restored by all that will unfold during this virtual gathering, and that you will be inspired by the uplifting words of our anointed preachers: Reverend Dr. Myra Turner Billips (Noon Hour of Power) and Reverend Dr. Marcus D. Cosby (Closing Worship Service).

Rev. Jessica and I are profoundly grateful to the presiding elders, clergy, missionaries, YPDers, laity, choirs, other ministries and organizations, and other people of the First for the unspeakable joy you all bring us. We also thank God for our outstanding office staff and tech team, whose labors of love and commitment to excellence are unparalleled. Please know that each of you continually make a difference in our lives.

We are excited about what we as a District are going to do this conference year to build up God’s Kingdom. We want you to live each minute, hour and day as if it were a new beginning—because each is. Additionally, please take every opportunity to grow in the Spirit, as you bask in your calling to make a difference. Rev. Jessica and I want you to stretch out on faith and make this year special in your own life, as well as that of your local church.Keep Making a Difference!

The Reverend Dr. Myra Turner Billips is a fresh prophetic voice in the Body of Christ proclaiming a Gospel that reaches all generations. He r p ow e r f u l teac h i ng a n d preaching and charismatic style of worship has changed the lives of many from Texas to South Africa. She has had many opportunities to preach God’s Word, two of which should be noted are the Connectional Women’s Missionary Society Quadrennial 2003 and the General Conference 2004, RAYAC Revival. She is a cradle member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and is the 10th child to the late Presiding Elder William D. Turner and Mrs. Martha L. Turner.

Dr. Billips holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Paul Quinn College in Dallas, Texas, a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in Black Church Studies from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas and a Doctor of Ministry from Payne Theological Seminary, Inaugural Class, Wilberforce, Ohio. Her dissertation focused on the emerging phenomena of Clergy Couples through the Lens of Liberation Theology.

Dr. Billips’ ministry began in 1995, and she has experienced many firsts as a female pastor. She was afforded the opportunity to be the first female to preach at a City-Wide Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration for the League of Involved Women’s Association in Northeast Texas, while serving as the Senior Pastor of Allen Chapel, Coolidge, Texas. In addition, she is the first female pastor to join the Lake Como Interdenominational Ministers Alliance in 2004 in Fort Worth, Texas, the first female co-pastor at Johnson Chapel, Fort Worth, Texas, Shiloh A.M.E. Church, Galveston, Texas, and Mount Zion, New Brunswick, New Jersey. She served along with her husband as the first Co-Christian Education Directors for Tenth Episcopal District. Dr. Billips also served

as the first female Chairperson for Ministerial Efficiency Committee in the Texas Annual Conference, in the Tenth Episcopal District.

Her civic, community and professional affiliations past and present include: Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities; Board member for St. Vincent’s House; co-writer of the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital’s Healthy Food Guidelines for houses of worship which serves as a model for other ministries throughout New Jersey; and an advocate for women who suffer from abusive relationships. Pastor Myra and her husband were featured in the Robert Wood Johnson 2014 Calendar couples against domestic violence. They are members of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and recipients of the Mother Bethel Community Service Award. Dr. Myra is co-founder of B Global Ministries. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., as well as a workshop and conference facilitator for clergy couples, women’s ministries, and leadership retreats.

She is excited that she has served the last sixteen years with her husband and devoted partner in ministry Reverend Dr. Eric R. Billips, Sr., as co-pastors; and they are now serving as the Senior Pastors of North Stelton, A.M.E. Church, Piscataway, New Jersey. It is proper and fitting to note that they are the first pastoral team to receive a co-pastoral appointment in the First Episcopal District and one of the few husband and wife teams with both names on the Pastoral Appointment throughout the A.M.E. Connectional Church. Pastor Myra is the proud mother of four gifted children and five grandchildren. She lives by her favorite scripture, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” Colossians 3:23.

The Reverend Dr. Marcus D. Cosby, the third child born to the late Mr. Rogers Cosby and Mrs. Bobbie J. Cosby, serves as the Senior Pastor of W heeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. A proud native of Chicago, Illinois and a product of Emmanuel Baptist Church where Dr. L.K. Curry served as pastor, Cosby received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion and English from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, the Master of Divinity Degree in Homiletics and Christian Education from the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia and the Doctor of Ministry Degree in Homiletics from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois.

Dr. Cosby is married to his high school sweetheart, Mrs. Audrey Marie Cosby, and they have been blessed with three beautiful daughters, Adrienne Marie, Ashley Marie and Aliyah Marie and two sons, Marcus D., II and Matthew D. Cosby.

As the successor to the Founding Pastor of Wheeler Avenue, Dr. William A. Lawson, Pastor Cosby has been blessed to continue the ministry of this intentionally intergenerational congregation in the inner city of Houston, Texas since 2004, having served as Associate Pastor since 1998. With four Sunday worship services and a membership of more than 15,000, he has led the congregation to ensure its impact both on and far beyond the church campus with the inception of the Wheeler Avenue Christian Academy, serving children from 6 weeks old through the first grade; by opening a transitional housing facility for homeless single mothers in the Third Ward community of Houston; through cultivating a missional outreach in multiple villages in South Africa; and maintaining a passion for creatively impacting the lives of the forsaken and forgotten wherever they may be found.

As a consequence of his passion for qualitative preaching, Dr. Cosby has committed himself to

equipping preachers for the work of the ministry. In addition to training the more than 100 ministers who comprise the Clergy Team of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, he serves as Adjunct Professor of

Homiletics at Houston Graduate School of Theology and has taught the same at the Houston extension program of the ITC. In 2008, he was inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. And in 2013 he became the Founder and CEO of Preaching with Power and Authority Ministries, a corporation committed to the pedagogy and promotion of relevant biblical preaching for the 21st Century.

Additionally, Dr. Cosby serves as a member of the Board of the Home Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., the Fisk University Board of Trustees and the General Alumni Association of Fisk University, Inc. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Samuel Dewitt Proctor Conference, the African American Pulpit, the Houston Area Urban League, Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, the Texas Commission for Community Service and Volunteerism, and as an Advisory Board Member of The Gardner C. Taylor Preaching Archives and Listening Room in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity and a Life Member of the NAACP.

Among the gifts and talents with which God has blessed Pastor Cosby, none are more meaningful and fulfilling to him than preaching and teaching. He has been blessed to carry his ministry across the country and on the Mother Continent of Africa. He has lectured, preached and taught in numerous and varied settings, including conferences, conventions, retreats, revivals and on university and seminary campuses. Finally, Dr. Cosby seeks to encourage and empower all humanity through the timeless and transformative truths found in the Word of God.

Minister: I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord, our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

People: Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God.

Minister: Blessed are they that dwell in thy house. Lord I have loved thy habitation, the place where thy honor dwelleth.
