BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli has distinguished itself on the
national scene this year by being ranked first among all 31 NITs and Eleventh
among all the technical institutes in the country by the National Institute Ranking
framework (NIRF) of the Government of India. Established as the Regional
Engineering College (REC) in 1964, the salubrious campus became NIT,
Tiruchirappalli in 2007 and is an autonomous Institution under MHRD, Government
of India. The President of India is the visitor of the Institute.

To provide valuable resources for industry and society through excellence
in technical education and research.
Mission
To offer state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral
programmes.
To generate new knowledge by engaging in cutting-edge research.
To undertake collaborative projects with academia and industries.
To develop human intellectual capability to its fullest potential.
Objectives of the Institute
The aims and objectives of NIT Tiruchirappalli, as assigned by the NIT Council are
To offer world-class instruction in Science and Engineering.
To provide adequate facilities for postgraduate study and research.
To establish teaching and research programmes of an interdisciplinary nature;
To develop close co-operation with industry.
To develop strong collaborative links with other Institutions and organizations.
To anticipate, plan and prepare the technological needs for India.
To improve utilization of available resources.
Administration
The NITs are now fully funded by the Central Government. The move was intended to
provide high quality teaching and research in the branches of engineering, science,
technology and management. NIT, Tiruchirappalli is also one among them and its

basic structure, functions and powers are provided in the NIT Act 2007 and NIT Statute
2009.
Academics
NIT, Tiruchirappalli follows credit-based academic programmes with a flexible
curriculum, minor specializations, flipped class rooms and new evaluation models.
The Institute has won the prestigious CII-AICTE best industry linked institute,
National level awards from FICCI for social responsibility and from ASSOCHAM for
the best institute to used ICT tools in education. The institute also received High
impact Entrepreneurship Campus Award jointly awarded by the Ministry of Skills
Development and Entrepreneurship.
NIT, Tiruchirappalli has forged links with peer universities and institutes, both at the
national and the international levels, to enhance research and enrich its academic
programmes. The alumni have distinguished themselves through their achievements
in and contributions to industry, academics, research, business, and governance
domains. The institute continues to work closely with the alumni to enhance its
activities through interactions in academic and research programmes as well as to
mobilize financial support. The Institute has 17 Academic departments and runs 10
UG Programmes, 25 Masters Programme, MS by Research and Ph.D. Programmes
in major fields of Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management.
Research and Consultancy
Apart from consultancy work undertaken by engineering departments, academic
research and R&D activities are at a par with leading Institution of the country. NIT,
Tiruchirappalli has introduced MS (by Research) in all engineering departments in
order to provide a platform for aspiring engineers to pursue their research. Faculty
members holding doctoral degree are offered a seed money to start their research.
Research papers have been published and presented by our faculty members and
research scholars in refereed journals, conferences, seminars and symposia of
international and national repute. Seminars, conferences and symposia are also
organized by various departments of our institute.
A thriving environment for the faculty and students encourages collaborative
research and consultancy resulting in several MoUs with industry and other reputed
academic and research institutions. 12 MoUs with industry, 8 MoUs with foreign
academic institutes and 17 MoUs with Indian academic institutes have been signed
this year. The Centre for Land Warfare Studies, New Delhi; Bhabha Atomic

Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai; Centre for Development of Advance Computing
(C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram; Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSE),
Thiruvananthapuram; Loughborough University, United Kingdom; Indian Institute of
Technology, Kharagpur; Royal Academy of Engineering for Higher Education,
London are some of the partnering institutions.
The Institute has received a number of awards like the prestigious National Award
for Excellence in Employability at the FICCI – 12th Higher Education Summit 2016;
the National Award for Excellence in Serving Social Cause at the ASSOCHAM – 10th
Higher Education Summit 2017 spearheaded by the Umbrella social outreach
movement - HumaNITTy encompassing Apeksha, PPC, PSR, SEC, FSR, SPIRIT-Ed
and HHNITT. A 5-day residential computer-training program for 50 visually impaired
students / teachers of Trichy and neighboring districts was conducted during
December 2016. In addition, a one day motivational training program for visually
impaired persons in association with NIVH under Ministry of Social Justice and
Empowerment, Govt. of India, was conducted with free distribution of 90 Plextalk
Daisy text to voice reader devices to the participants.
Central Library
The Institute has a modern Central Library with more than two and half lakhs of
documents consisting of Technical Books, Reports, Standards, CD-ROMS, Audio
Visual Educational Cassettes and Back volumes of Journals. The library subscribes
to 164 periodicals (print) plus 7000+E-journals and 600+E-books besides a holding
of 17690 Back volumes of Journals. The library also contains 16,750 books in the
Book Bank Scheme.
Digital Knowledge Centre has been established with 70 Computer systems provided
with DVD-RW Drive. Wi-Fi facility has been provided for laptop users. CCTV web
cameras have been fixed in the Central Library and the entire building is under
camera surveillance. RFID Technology of Document Identification and Library
Security System have been implemented for the library functions and services.
OCTAGON (Computer Center)
The Computer Support Group has been providing valuable services in maintaining
and continuously updating the campus-wide LAN. With the help of the CSG,
currently Wi-Fi facility is available throughout the campus. Through the CSG, NIT
Tiruchirappalli is now connected to the Internet via two Internet Service Providers
(ISP): 150 Mbps leased line from Software Technology Park of India (STPi) and

1Gbps shared connectivity by National Informatics Centre (NIC) using Bharat
Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Railnet, as a part of National Knowledge Network
(NKN) and National Mission on Education through Information & Communication
Technology (NME-ICT).
The hallmark of this campus is the OCTAGON - Computer Center. This center
serves the campus-wide LAN in close association with the user departments. This
LAN caters to 1500 users across the campus at the same time and has a 10 Gbps
fiber optic backbone. It also acts as a resource centre to supplement classroom
instructions with laboratory sessions. The OCTAGON accommodates the central
computing facilities; it has a server room with Windows 27 & Linux 18 high-end servers
and 200 high-end computers; its laboratories include four labs; a Printer room
equipped with high- speed A3 and A4 network Laser Printers (color and mono); a
Library for software, CBTs and manuals; Conference and Seminar facilities, a
CAD/CAM Centre with 22 high-end workstations and an in-house maintenance
facility. The centre is maintained by the Computer Support Group (CSG). It has
centralized 2 x 60 kVA redundant Uninterrupted Power Supply with 200 kVA standby
Power Generators and Central Air Conditioning.
A new Annex building with an additional capacity of 198 computers has come up
next to Octagon to meet the additional requirements. The Annex building has two
labs, each with 99 computers. A second annexure with 4 laboratories is coming up
during this academic year.

Recruitment & Apprentices for the institute.
This centre serves the campus – wide LAN (Wired as well as wireless) in
close association with the user departments.
Wired Campus Networking having 10 Gbps Fibre Optic Backbone, Gigabit
Routing Switch and 1/10 Gbps Managed Switches a Departments.

A Wi-fi facility available at Hostel Zones and select pockets of the campus.
Very soon the facility would be available throughout the campus.
Network security is provided through two UTM appliances with failover option
(Sonic wall NSA 8500) AND two E-mail Security appliances (Sonic Wall
Es8300). User authentication for browsing the Internet is linked with ADS.
Student Life
Students at NIT, Tiruchirappalli are exposed to various aspects of life apart from
academics. An active student council, numerous club activities, festivals and sports
keep them engaged and ensure all round development.
NIT, Tiruchirappalli can easily accommodate all the students in the well-furnished
hostels provided here. Students from all over the country make this institute their
home and expose themselves to people from different cultures. Hostel life
encourages them to understand the importance of teamwork.
The various activities or clubs students can participate in include NCC, NSS, sports,
clubs for literature, photography, drama, fine arts, design and others. There are also
various student run technical clubs for coding, robotics, product designing and R&D.
Modern sports facilities and a well-equipped gymnasium are also available on
campus.
The Alumni of this institution have excelled in various spheres and are globally
placed. RECAL, the alumni association of NIT, Tiruchirappalli takes part actively in
Institute development.
NIT, Tiruchirappalli hosts two inter-collegiate festivals. The cultural festival
Festember is held in month of September and is one of the largest cultural festivals
in Southern India. The technical festival Pragyan is held in the even semesters and
is one of Asia's best technical festivals. They bring down students in thousands from
all over the country. NIT, Tiruchirappalli also has an inter-department festival
namely, NITTFEST.
The campus is about 800 acres and has various amenities apart from the hostels
and academic buildings. It has a 24*7 Hospital, Pharmacy, Post Office, Swimming
Pool, Football ground, numerous canteens, messes, stationary stores, State Bank of
India, ATMs, Central Library and Shopping Centre etc.
