THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Morning Worship – 9:30 a.m. May 16, 2021

Silent prayer for use in preparation for worship:

O Thou, from Whom to be turned is to fall, to Whom to be turned is to rise, and with Whom to stand is to abide for ever; grant us in all our duties Thy help; in all our perplexities Thy guidance; in all our

dangers Thy protection; and in all our sorrows Thy peace: through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

A Prayer of Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D PRELUDE Christ ist Erstanden (Christ is Risen) BWV 627 J.S. Bach

John Black, Organ Crown Him With Many Crowns arr. K.R. Phillips

Alexandra Nichols, Violin *CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm 24)

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who

dwell therein, FOR HE HAS FOUNDED IT UPON THE SEAS AND ESTABLISHED IT UPON THE RIVERS. Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? Who shall stand in His holy place? HE WHO HAS CLEAN HANDS AND A PURE HEART, WHO DOES NOT LIFT UP HIS SOUL

TO WHAT IS FALSE AND DOES NOT SWEAR DECEITFULLY. He will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from the God of his

salvation. SUCH IS THE GENERATION OF THOSE WHO SEEK HIM, WHO SEEK THE FACE OF THE

GOD OF JACOB. *+HYMN A Hymn of Glory Let Us Sing PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison)

ALMIGHTY GOD, WHO HAST SENT THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH UNTO US TO GUIDE US INTO ALL TRUTH, SO RULE OUR LIVES BY THY POWER THAT WE MAY BE TRUTHFUL IN THOUGHT AND WORD AND DEED. FORGIVE OUR MANY SINS, AND GRANT THAT NO FEAR MAY EVER MAKE US FALSE IN ACT OR SPEECH. CAST OUT FROM US WHATSOEVER LOVETH OR MAKETH A LIE, AND BRING US ALL TO THE PERFECT FREEDOM OF THY TRUTH, THROUGH JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. AMEN.

A prayer of Brooke Foss Westcott, Bishop of Durham, 1825-1901

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (responsively)

Believe the good news of the Gospel. IN JESUS CHRIST, WE ARE FORGIVEN.

*GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

World without end. Amen, amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, AND IN

JESUS CHRIST HIS ONLY SON OUR LORD; WHO WAS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY GHOST, BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY, SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, WAS

CRUCIFIED, DEAD, AND BURIED. HE DESCENDED INTO HELL. THE THIRD DAY HE ROSE AGAIN FROM THE DEAD; HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, AND SITTETH ON THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY; FROM THENCE HE SHALL COME TO

JUDGE THE QUICK AND THE DEAD. I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY GHOST; THE HOLY CATHOLIC CHURCH; THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS; THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS; THE

RESURRECTION OF THE BODY; AND THE LIFE EVERLASTING. AMEN INTERCESSORY PRAYERS

*(Congregation standing, as able)

John 17:6-19 “I have manifested Your name to the people whom You gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and You gave them to me, and they have kept Your word. Now they know that everything that You have given Me is from You. For I have given them the words that You gave Me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. All Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. And I will remain in the world no longer, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, which You have given Me, that they may be one, even as We are one. While I was with them, I kept them in Your name, which You have given Me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate Myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth.”

I John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR FRANCES HELEN REED BONN will be held THIS Saturday, May 22, 11:00 A.M. Fran departed this life April 22, 2020; we were constrained from having a service at the time due to pandemic restrictions limiting services to five participants. From the 4/22 Calling Tree email: “Many of you knew and loved Fran; she and her late husband Jim officially joined the church in 1968 and were involved in many aspects of the church’s life and ministry. Both were born in 1929 and went on to become childhood sweethearts, they married May 27, 1950 and eventually became the parents of five and grandparents of ten. Together they faithfully and lovingly honored their marriage covenant until death did them part January 21, 2005. I/we can take some comfort in knowing they are now reunited and in the great company of the Church Triumphant, the church eternal, where Fran has been received by God and dwells in His presence forever.”
